Legendary Pictures' 2014 Godzilla Reboot - Directed by Gareth Edwards

As a life long Godzilla fan (since i was 2 or 3) Im glad to see there are a lot of G-fans on this board. Shows that even without much the last few years he is still a popular icon like Transformers or Batman or Star Wars or any of the other icons we discuss on here and love so much. I feel like once this movie gets released Godzilla's popularity will BOOM like it used to be in the 90s if not bigger. It could be a very high grossing franchise if done right anyone else agree?

That said with Comic Con right around the corner do you think we will get an update? Heres my thoughts....

With us getting a SDCC exclusive Godzilla figure and assuming IDW will be promoting their Godzilla comics too what are the odds you think we will get something from Legendary Pictures on the new Godzilla movie?

Last month Gareth Edwards said that they were in the worst part of filmmaking with was the "waiting process" so i am assuming that they are either waiting on script approval or budget approval or both and trying to get everything finalized and ready to start casting and filming

I truely think we will get something new at comic con on this film hopefully a release date and maybe concept art or teaser poster. Everything seems to be pointing to a 2014 release date. 2014 will be the 60th anniversary of Godzilla and that would be an excellent promotional tool and ever since 1954 a Godzilla movie has been out every anniversary year. On Legendary Pictures wikipedia page the release date for Godzilla has changed from TBA to 2014. Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB now also list this film as 2014.

While yes Legendary will be more focused this year promoting Pacific Rim and Man of Steel what will they have planned for 2013 Comic Con since both of those films will be out? 2013 SDCC would be perfect to promote Godzilla. I dont see why getting some more news or big announcement would be out of the question this year. It generates buzz and lets us fans know everything is going good.

What do you guys think? Will we finally get a big update at Comic Con? Is anyone going or know someone going that will stop by Legendary's booth? People should really try asking questions we have all been wondering! I think the biggest question has to be a release date atleast.

Funny thing is G-fest (Godzilla convention) will be that same weekend so you can bet G-fans will be closely monitoring hoping for some big news! What timing would that be!

I think WB and Legendary are waiting till 2014, if I was a betting man. But I hope at the panels, they'll talk about it more.

Ive never been to Comic Con so what are these panels you mention? Are you talking about the Pacific Rim or Man of Steel panels or something seperate?

Panels are separated by studios. WB and Legendary have their own panels, and I went to the Legendary panel last year. The head of Legendary apologized about the lack of Godzilla updates but promised to have news the next year (this year.)

I only saw the 1998 Godzilla once, but I remember enjoying it at the time. Then again I was about 12 and I was a sucker for anything with a giant monster rampaging in a city. I might dislike it more next time I see it, but I remember digging it. I've always enjoyed pretty much anything Godzilla.

I saw it as a teenager and despised the film. It felt like a huge departure from the character. I decided to watch it today ( found the blu ray in Walmart's bargain bin) and just enjoyed it for what it was. I don't mind it as much because the disappointment has wore off and I know they are doing a reboot.

I saw it when I was like 6 or 7, i cried when godzilla died. I still cry when I watch it, but for completely different reasons.

Wow seriously??? So that pretty much guarentees then we will get something this year??
It would go with what Gareth Edwards said in may saying "Hope to have some proper news soon. So you wont have to wait too long at all"

Are you going back to Comic Con as well?

From BC:
Timur Bekmembetov Tells Me About Gareth Edwards’ Robot Movie, Forever
Brendon Connelly said:
Now that he’s wrapped Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which you can currently catch in cinemas across the US, the UK and much of the world, Timur Bekmembetov‘s attention can return to a handful of oft-discussed ongoing projects. One of these is the sequel to Wanted, that he intends to direct, and another is an original sci-fi project that he’s producing for director Gareth Edwards, creator of the rather beautiful Monsters.

Until now, most details of that project have been under wraps, but speaking with Timur recently, I asked him a few questions about the film, and he blessed me with some very interesting answers.

For one thing, the film now has a title. It’s going to be called Forever. The story line takes place in a (largely) post-human future, populated with robots. There will be some human characters, however, including a young boy who, I understand, is one of the two leads. It seems likely to me that the title will refer to the immortal lifespan of the robots, or perhaps the incomprehensible nature of death. It’s an evocative title to mix with these characters, anyhow.

Timur says the project is progressing nicely:
It’s happening. He shot a test film, and we now have to wait until the script is in place. Gareth is meeting with the writer to polish the script. The writer is Dante Harper.
Harper is a rather busy screenwriter with a taste for sci-fi. He adapted the Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill into a screenplay that reportedly sold for $3 million, and is working on a movie version of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation. We’ve yet to see any of his writing work on the big screen, though our first chance, I believe, will be when Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is released in the spring.

So, somewhere out there is a short test piece showing how Gareth Edwards wants to realise his robot future. I know I’d love to see that.

It’s unclear if Forever will be next for Edwards, or if he’ll first get to work on his Godzilla remake. Either way, this one seems like a passion project for him and I’m sure we’ll be seeing it sooner or later.

ugh :( im tired of seeing this Godzilla remake being pushed back further and further... i want this movie to be made already

But the problem is that, they also promoted a movie that they soon canceled, that being Paradise Lost. So we can't take his word with an absolute.

Yes, I'm going this year. Hopefully I can make it to the panel.

Damn I wish this movie would be made already . The big g needs a comeback

i was another dark and horrifying Godzilla movie that reflects the 1950's and the horrors of nuclear radiation... similar to Cloverfield, but not the same way that movie was filmed- something scarier, more sinister... this is Godzilla for crying out loud!
I want Godzilla to be the monster again, the true monster that he started out to be...

dare i say, i want possibly an rated R film... i want to see them take Godzilla back to his horror roots. still be a monster film, but make it truly a science fiction monster horror film.

I just hope Godzilla fights a monster in it. A monster battle with the crazy special effects we have today would be awesome.

Pacific Rim is gonna steal its thunder if they don't do something different.

Assuming Godzilla will attack America again,I think the producers really need to show some balls and have Godzilla's creation be a result of the United States nuclear testing,or even somehow related to it's criticized foreign policies over the decades. As in,having the country's mistake revisited on itself and mankind, like they did with the original series. Godzilla needs to make a serious statement and not just be some mindless action film(like the 1998 version). I think we also need to see the chaos the creature causes, and show the victims of his attacks. Seeing the dead and dying is brutal, yes, but it would also show the impact of Godzilla and make him more than just a CGI lizard knocking down famous landmarks. And yes,I think he needs to fight another creature too. Usually these origin stories just have a monster fighting the military, and that's...boring.

I for one think he should attack Japan. If they were to do America I think the story would be cool if he was a product of nuclear testing before WW2. When he attacks America its the US's actions of WW2 coming back to haunt them.

I would actually like to see Godzilla attack many places in the world, America would realize it was their fault and help, with Godzilla most of the time staying in Japan, i think that they should use some of the same characters of the original film, that journalist appearing and that japanese scientist using that bomb in the end to sacrifice himself and kill godzilla

I was actually thinking about that myself. Godzilla could attack different locations. Tokyo,New York,London;etc. The whole world would have to deal with what they helped create.

Yes because thats what I look for in a Godzilla film...a heavy handed political statement

maybe they can throw in a jab at the war in Iraq/Afghanistan, bailing out Wall Street and George W Bush

Godzilla's always been a metaphor of nuclear weaponry ****ing up the world, considering that the good ol' US of A are the only nation to ever nuke another I think it's poignant.

you must have completely missed the point of the original. or have you only seen the raymond burr film.

I've seen the original and while the original was a commentary on nuclear weapons it wasn't heavy handed. Godzilla's creation is attributed to nuclear weapons testing but never to a country or their policies.

I'm not suggesting anything that heavy or political(I wouldn't want to see a message laden film either),but the new Godzilla, like the Toho version, needs a purpose. I don't want to see some lame monster movie that's all special effects(which is what the 98' film was). Japan took Godzilla seriously, but had fun with it. I'm afraid that Hollywood will just see it as a cash cow(big shocker, right?). I want this Godzilla done right.

while the original 1954 Godzilla was focused on the testing of nuclear bombs, it mostly focused on something some of you missed up on...

it's main focus was on how mankind was becoming so destructive in their ways and technology, and because of their hostility towards one another and the earth, it produced the monster known as Godzilla. The original movie was not a politically driven movie... it was a horror movie focus-driven on the destiny of mankind... its hostility, the wanton drive for violence and destruction, and the ongoing desire for war.

unfortunately, after the first movie, the company decided to turn the franchise into an action series (which was kinda okay), and then a kids franchise (which was an embarrassment)...

while i do think the remake should have some action elements to it, i want to see this film return to its core element: horror.
