Well, that confirmed that the dope on the other forum I read who saw the movie last week, and whose entire review was one long "WHY DON'T THEY SING LIKE MY CAST RECORDING?!?! whine really did have no idea WTF she was talking about.
Sounds like she wants a clone of the stage show - Hugh sings "I'm JVJ" differently and Russell has new lines at the beginning.
 
That was the only way to make it a MOVIE musical. But I think, singing it this way makes the music even more powerful. At the same time, I do wish that the factory scene wasn't that mild....
 
The more I read that is "a movie for the fans" the more excited I get, that's honestly all I care about, a fine adaptation.

She specifically went after the "I'm JVJ" line. She suggested he was intimidated because Colm Wilkinson was in the movie too. Because Colm was clearly showing up on set every day wearing his mask from Phantom, hiding behind corners, and yelling "BOO!" every time Hugh tried to film a scene.

OMG!!! :doh::doh::doh: Yeah, sure..... I thought that snippet was GREAT, not like someone standing on a stage belting to the back of the theater. You can see the anguish in his face and hear it in his voice.
 
Glad they both liked it (and Tapley knew nothing about it), but they both think "Lincoln" and DDL will win (Tapley said he was waiting to see Hugh but thinks DDL will still win). Tapley thinks the last spot is between Hugh and Cooper, Anne thinks Denzel will drop out.
 
Glad they liked it. And while SLP may not be a real indie, it is a great movie. I am happy with it getting recognition more than Weinstein's last political play for last year. But there are better movies year. Not that that stopped Harvey last time.
 
Yeah she looks better with long hair. The short hair doesn't suit her well.
I think it suits her fine. Whereas if my hair was that short, I'd look like a human lollipop. :oldrazz:

Hmm, Crowe isn't that bad there after all. Seyfried still has the weakest soprano, ugh. :doh:
 
Not quite, he just hated how it was shot from what I gathered. Said the cast carried the movie, but Hooper did a bad job filming it.
I'm really not that surprised. I have a friend who did the sound mixing for the John Adams miniseries and did NOT have nice things to say by how misguided Hooper was in his micromanaging of the sound. :funny: "Just go away and let us do our jobs!"

It's primarily a director's job to direct the actors and say yes or no. Re: the acting, it sounds like Hooper has consistently hit, so he's not a bad director. But not everyone has to/can be an auteur, and if you really don't have the ability, it's best to just stand back and let your crew do their jobs. :funny:

If I paid to see her in a Broadway show, I'd be upset. For the film, I think her voice works. Adult Cossette is a very small and underserved role, and she comes across as a willowy and heavily sheltered (physically and mentally) young woman with an extremely cautious and overprotective father. It reinforces how she is viewed by those around her: frail and delicate, and prone to shattering in a mild breeze.
 

Honestly, he sounds like someone who is still pissed off Hooper won Best Director and Picture two years ago. I get it. I too think Fincher and TSN were vastly superior, but get over it!

I am not expecting astounding direction from Hooper. But I've seen enough of his work--TKS and John Adams--to know he is very capable of creating a competent picture. And given how the trailer looks, I expect this to be more than that.
 


That review has no credibility; what a fool. He starts off by indicating a heavy bias against the director and fighting old battles over past, unrelated work. Then he criticizes the movie for not following the source material, which he hasn't seen (Les Miz is based on the musical, not the book; the mischaracterization of the Thenardiers is the sin of the musical, not the movie).

Oh sorry, it's not a musical, it's a "play." Apparently you can be an arts critic these days without knowing the distinction, as if he's never bothered to watch the Tony Awards in his life.
