I think almost every reviews has been mostly impressed by the movie. The only real problem they point out is the speed of the narrative and occasionally the camerawork, but it's Les Mis, it's what was to be expected. But it shines through every review that people really liked it. Take this one, for example ... he spends long time criticizing the film, and then, at the end:

For many audiences, this will become the definitive version of the musical, and I think it is a very strong production overall. While I think it reveals some of Hooper's weaknesses as a filmmaker, it plays to enough of his strengths that it looks like the long wait to bring this to the screen paid off. "Les Miserables," like many musicals, is ultimately about emotion, and that's the one thing that comes through loud and clear here. When it all comes down to the singing, the communication of these grand, sweeping passions in song, "Les Miserables" connects and connects and connects again, and on that level, it has to be called a triumph.

that's good to hear. and ultimately, for me, that's what it's all about......emotion.

I learned with the Phantom movie that you can't expect the vocal/singing quality of these film versions to match their Broadway counterparts.

I admit, at first, I was thrown off when I listened to the vocals in the Phantom movie. And that's only natural. After all, we've become so used to the iconic Broadway versions.

However, the more I listened to the singing in the Phantom movie, the more I grew to appreciate, and favor, the movie version. With Gerard's Phantom, especially, I connected more with the raw, visceral emotion he conveyed in his singing.

And it can go the other way, too. Like when I heard the Little Mermaid broadway songs for the 1st time, again, I was thrown off because I'm so used to the film's versions. But, the more I listened to the Broadway version, again, the more I came to like it more.

But this is completely different. Les Mis was sung live on set as they were acting. Phantom was pre-recorded in a studio first and then when filming they mimed to the pre-recording. That's the way most movie musicals had been done, up until now with Les Mis where EVERYTHING is live as filmed. This way you get all the emotion as the actor is acting.

If anyone is worrying about the box office, here's one for you: the ladies at the hair salon I go to are in a frenzy I usually only see whenever a new Twilight movie is released about how excited they are for this movie, and are already falling to pieces seeing what Anne Hathaway did to herself, just from the commercials.

The movie is going to be fine, kids. :funny:

oh, I agree. I think it's better filming/singing everything live like they are doing in Les Mis.

I was just trying to say that you can't really expect the vocals in the film version to match the Broadway version. Or, to put it better, to think they will sound exactly the same.

If you go in expecting the vocals in the film to match in technical quality, or sound the same, as the the Broadway vocals, you'll likely be disappointed.

From what I've heard from the clips so far, I already favor the film vocals, and that has a lot to do with the actors' emotions and acting.

That it will. There's a loyal fan base that will flock to see it. And I'm sure other people will see an appeal, be it liking members of the cast, Hugh, Russell, Anne etc or from general interest.

Looks like Hugh turned up at Russell Crowe's gig at Joe's Pub in NYC tonight. :wow:

That's not acting! Hugh owed Russell $20 and was about to run out that night without settling up. :cmad:

Plus "The Letter" - look at Barks rocking out in the background LOL.

This is the kind of thing maybe only fellow Canadians will understand, but how awesome is it to see Alan Doyle (the guy with long hair playing the guitar) playing and singing alongside Hugh Jackman and other Les Miz cast members! :awesome:

He's one of our country's more celebrated Celtic rockers.

I think Alan Doyle is part of Russell's band (along with the others on stage) and has a part in "Winter's Tale" which Russell is filming now (which is why he's been pretty absent on the promotion circule for Les Mis).

Yeah, that's how Alan got the role of Alan-a-dale in the Robin Hood movie, and why Russell played an Irish gangster on a Canadian TV show last year.

AND THEY SANG THE CONFRONTATION!

Wow, that's the first version of Confrontation that ever left me wanting to hold up a lighter... :funny:

Those videos are great!!

Is the guy in the background near Samantha bark the guy that played "The Blob" in "Wolverine"?

I like one youtube comment

Javert vs Valjean rap battle
Yes, that's Kevin Durand. He was also in Robin Hood with Russell and Real Steel with Hugh.

Anyone see the 60 minutes interview with Jackman? Could anyone guess how much he lifted?!

They didn't say and I have no clue but I remember reading that he can bench-press 350 lbs. I on the other hand, can barely lift a 10 lb. bowling ball. :woot:

I need to stop spoiling myself.

Seriously. I still haven't heard "Suddenly". I dropped the sound when the clip started on the 60 Minutes segment. I will make it to the movie theater to hear that song, dammit. :argh:

Today Show this morning, Kelly & Michael later for Hugh. All of them were there, even the kids (except for Russell and Helena).
