Live Action 'Dumbo'

Frankenweenie was cute, but nothing to write home about.

I heard good things from some people I know who saw it. But, my opinion of Burton is just low right now. I saw that Miss Perigrine's Home for Peculiar Children movie, and I only made it through by making fun of it. Awful. Just look at this 2000s filmography:

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Big Eyes
Frankenweenie
Dark Shadows
Alice in Wonderland
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Corpse Bride
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Big Fish
Planet of the Apes

I admit I didn't see Big Eyes or Frankenweenie, but outside of Big Fish and Sweeney Todd...this is some unimpressive work! There was a time when a Tim Burton movie got me excited. But something happened to the man. I don't know if it is laziness or what, but man his work suffered greatly. I want to believe in Dumbo. It feels like something that suits him. But so did Alice in Wonderland, which almost felt like a Burton parody.

That teaser was great! This looks fantastic.

As for Tim Burton's recent output, more hits than misses;

Big Fish is a masterpiece.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is better than what people give it credit for. It's very true to the book and is actually better than the 1971 film in that regard. All of Danny Elfman's songs are major wins.
Corpse Bride is good. Songs not as good.
Sweeney Todd is great!
Planet of the Apes, Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows are probably his only real misses on that list and aren't very good.
Frankenweenie is an amazing movie, a lot of heart. The only black and white animated feature?
Big Eyes is kind of forgettable but has some amazing moments.
Miss Peregrine is underrated.

CatCF I didn't hate, I just found it mediocre and uninteresting. Some thing worked, other things didn't. The movie was fairly bland for as eccentric as it was. Corpse Bride looked good, but the story itself was just okay. Miss Perigrine was so bad it was funny.

But that's just the thing here with Burton, since 2000, most of his films I have seen just ranged from mediocre to downright awful. I want to believe this will be more like Big Fish, but I easily can see this being Alice in Wonderland again: something that feels like an empty Burton imitation.

When I see a elephant fly (What d'you say, boy?)

Cast is fantastic I LOVED DUMBO AS A KID as my mom was into this spiritual thing with elephant figurines so she adored that movie and 1 TV meant I had to love it too lol

I will always check out Burton movies even though I agree he has been more Miss that hit lately

I loved dark shadows I mean I'm a depp fan so maybe i'm biased

this looks good had no idea Keaton and DeVito were in this that alone

Dumbo is so cute. He looked like nightmare fuel before, but the actual CGI model is adorable.

Nothing really happened to him. He just is very one trick. Always has been and has just kind of run out of ideas. Still, I love Sweeney Todd, Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie. Some of his best imo, especially Todd. I enjoyed Miss Peregine's, Charlie, Big Eyes and Alice, though none of those were close to great. If Dumbo is great, great. But yeah, I won't expect it. At least Eva, Keaton and Farrell are in this. I at least got that. :hehe:

Corpse Bride was alright, but doesn't even come into my like 5 favorites of Burton's. Heck, maybe not even top 10 (I'd have to think about it). I love that style of film, but the story just didn't strike fire like Nightmare Before Christmas (which I am aware he is not the official director of). Again, I just can't comment on Frankenweenie.

I do think he lost a creative spark somewhere, though. I cannot see the same creative mind that did Edward Scissorhands or Ed Wood when watching his newer stuff like Dark Shadows. I just see a guy trying to wear the same hat without the creativity or hunger that got him to the dance in the first place. At the end of the day, I think it comes down to Burton needs a "spark" to ignite that genius, and all too often it isn't there anymore.

I don't disagree with your assessment of his recent work.

Thinking about it, I'd have it.... 9th? Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Sweeney Todd, Ed Wood, Batman, Frankenweenie, Pee Wee, Batman Returns and then Corpse Bride. So, I guess I like a lot of his movies. :funny:

Frankenweenie is super adorable imo. It reminds me of Edward Scissorhands and younger Burton in general.

Dark Shadows is one of the weirdest movies I can remember seeing in theaters. It has everything setup, but does almost nothing with it, outside of Green and it has a very bizarre ending. Its like a television show, "previously on", as opposed to an actual episode.

Mars attacks will always be underrated.

Burton has been hit and miss over the last 15 or so years so who knows how this turns out.

Dumbo's a baby elephant. There is no such thing as a baby elephant that is not cute. No way they could mess that up!

After seeing that Youtube clip with that baby elephant constantly wanting to be held by a much smaller woman, you see where it comes from.

Gosh who is doing the cinematography for this? It looks absolutely beautiful

I actually liked 'DARK SHADOWS.'
And 'BIG EYES' and 'MISS PEREGRINE' weren't bad, either.
Looking forward to this! The teaser trailer looks great.

Mars attacks will always be underrated.

I LOVE it!
