Live-Action The Little Mermaid

I still stand by my statement yesterday just create new princesses of different races with new backstories instead of pulling crap like this.

I won't call it a bone. Hopefully, this is going to do wonders for Halle's career. More people might check out her music, the girl is talented.
That's true, there is a great opportunity for this actress to catapult her career. The role of a lifetime.

I think it's mostly for Far From Home premiere.
last week she got red hair. in the last days they decided who to cast. you dont think the red hair was for camera tests when they talked to both girls?

Pretty abundantly clear they did and wanted a different racial take. Sorry Im not naive enough to take a hollywood director on his statement released. Hollywood would never lie to us right?
I'll ask this question again, why assume a black actress got a job just because she's black and never for her talent? You never would have given this a second thought if a white actress was casted. You would have just taken it at face value that she's the best person for the job.

this is not how hollywood does it. they first decide if the character will be white,black,asian,.... later when they agreed they start looking for talents

Nah. Halle didn't dye her hair, she would have if they were testing for camera.

I don't think anyone could argue with this. And Disney has the money and the marketing to pull it off, but seem to be creatively bereft of new ideas.

how come in the US its always a black actor that gets a major white character role? why not asians or arabs? Can you imagine an arab girl playing a classic disney princess? terrorists jokes and insults from the casting news until the realese date. It comes back to the best actor got the job.

It would be perfectly fine by me if they cast an Asian or other non-white person besides a black person in these roles more often when they choose to racebend. I'd be curious if there would indeed be many of these terrorist jokes and insults like you say. Because it seems people reserve most of their vitriol for racebending that turns characters black.

On the Titians tv show fanboys lost their feces over the Starfire casting but had little to say (from what I saw, anyway) about the Asian actor playing Beast Boy. And in that case it wasn't even racebending as Starfire isn't white lol.

Never heard anyone mad that the mcu version of Sitwell was latino.

People seemed to like Edward James Olmos as the originally white Adama in the Battlestar Galactica reboot. That show also changed the originally black male characters of Boomer & Tigh into an Asian woman & white man respectively and the world didn't end.

Angelina Jolie played Cat in the movie Wanted, who was black in the comics. I made a thread on here at the time asking if people were upset about that (since they get upset at instances like Kingpin, Alicia Masters, etc.) and several people in the thread said things like the lack of quality of the movie was the more pressing issue and not the racebending LOL.

One of the few instances that immediately comes to mind of fanboys being upset about racebending white characters not involving black actors is Jessica Alba as Sue Storm. I saw lots of e-anger about that one. Recall one guy even blaming it on the fact that the director was black LOL. No one seemed to have an issue with her playing Nancy in Sin City, though. Or with Rosario Dawson playing Gail in that same movie (I guess they didn't know Rosario is part black, heh).

Are you sure there wasn't a mandate from disney high ups to go with a black actress? Ill use zendaya in the new Spiderman movies as an example. She is nothing like Mary Jane at all including the red hair, shes just some emo socially awkward teenager who is mixed. It was clear there that sony wanted a mixed actress and just like this I zero doubts the same PC crap is at play again just so we can say Oh look at us were progressive.

They could have made the new belle, maleficent, mary poppins or even jasmine a black actress but didn't because of who they were in the original cartoon. But every once and a while the studio gets some sjw courage and pulls this. Again MAKE NEW PRINCESSES.

It should have been Victoria Justice. She looks the part, and Hispanics get a movie Disney princess. But whatever.

I firmly believe she is the best person for the job, but I too believe the words "must be black" were in the job description.

Casting is usually very specific. The producer and director are looking for a particular age, a particular height and weight, and most importantly, a particular look.

Seems like you'll be upset either way: racebending or new character. Zendaya's character isn't Mary Jane and yet you've been in this thread complaining about her multiple times.

First time I brought her up actually. Again make new princesses for new generations

Don't worry, I do understand historical context matters - this is just one of the most asinine and unproductive ways in which one could possibly try and 'address' historical context.

You want to talk about your grandma not being able to share infrastructure with whites in a thread about a fictional character being turned into a black character…Jesus, I can't take that seriously.

You want me to take you seriously? Talk about reparations for slavery because that has infinitely more merit than bull**** co-opting white characters now and then and making it sound like that's progress. For many people (Shaw being a good example) isn't about progress, it's about pissing off whitey and throwing the race card around when people call you out on ****ty discourse.

The actual progressives are talking about real things like reparations, not this nonsense.
Black people seeing themselves on screen as something other than a "thug" or a street jive comedic relief character, IS progress. Whether you want to admit it or not. The lack of positive representation for the black community is just a symptom of a larger, overarching problem with race in this country. But it's also still a huge part of it as media informs people's views of the world.

I hope positive affirmation like this in media follows suit for other minorities as well. It just sucks that some want to go back to the "good 'ol days" because one white character is now a person of color. It's hilarious how that can get people riled up

this is not how hollywood does it. they first decide if the character will be white,black,asian,.... later when they agreed they start looking for talents
So, going by this, it can be concluded that the reason why we have white actors playing majority of the characters is because, Hollywood already decided they only wanted White people. And that once a while they throw us a bone. You know what, I agree. Even if it is so, why get angry at the little chance others get to shine since majority of the people playing these characters are white.

Having said that, sometimes they call for open casting. And I think that's what happened here. I heard that they were also considering a white actress ( can't remember her name). I think the casting was open to all and Halle impressed them. But I mostly ask that question because people say the exact same thing every time a black actor gets any of these parts. " It must be for diversity ". Nobody questions the casting of the white person, he/she must have deserved it.

People are always going to be angry. Better to keep it up till it becomes the norm.

That will do nothing but make the situation worse. Human psychology has shown the more you try to force things on to people the more they start to get defensive. We have to evolve things so that we preserve the things that matter to people whilst also building on top of the foundations of stories and mythologies that have come before. That is the path that leads to a better future.

yes. wasnt it obvious?

I just don't get it honestly, did frozen take all of there energy left creatively making new princesses?
Had no problem creatively with that movie and look how well it did. How about they do the same for people of color?

It was fine and they've made billions off just that movie alone and soon the sequel. Like your last sentence they need to do the same for other people of color and races. My god coco was an amazing movie from top to bottom and created a new character in there library. I would prefer the live action remakes be in tune with there cartoon counterparts and at the same time disney do more coco and frozen creative projects that are new and fresh.

People were also angry at the civil rights movement, glad the people involved were not scared of making people angry.

they will be making money from Frozen for 20 years. can you imagine what happens when those girls who watched it in theaters grow up and have their own kids? millions....billions :)

Again to my point make new princesses and magic will happen. New characters for new generations

Are you comparing civil rights movement to people wanting a white red head girl and star fish on her breast and a fish tail brought to life as they saw it when they were kids?

notice ''to play Japanese'' and '' to play Asian''. Its important to the studio that the main characters are played by japanese people and only asians for the side characters. its all about the marketing. This is how this works in hollywood.
