Live-Action The Little Mermaid

There is also no stigma or anything against red-headed actors. We aren't talking about a marginalized group here that can't get work.

Debatable lol

It's sad to think Treasure Planet was/is the biggest modern bomb of Disney Animation history. Glad that it didn't kill Musker and Clements career though with Princess and the Frog and Moana finishing their run.

Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise weren't so lucky after Atlantis (they previously directed Beauty and the Beast and Hunchback). That was their last full length theatrical film!
Treasure Planet and Atlantis both deserved so much more love than they got upon release, and it makes me so happy that they've developed a cult following in recent years. THOSE are the movies that should be getting remade - the ones that never reached their full potential with the original version.

Anyway, the reaction to this is so frustrating. The racism, the bots... I feel so bad for everyone involved. And it sucks, because there are so many very obvious issues with how the remake (and all of the Disney remakes save Cinderella) look, but of course none of that gets talked about because the racists drown out the actual issues. But HOLY COW does this look ugly, cinematography wise. The drive to destroy the stylish "magic" of the original art in the name of "realism" is hitting this one even worse than the ones that came before.

Honestly, you'd think people would be more annoyed not because of Ariel being Black, but because this looks like and probably will be yet another soulless cash-grab of a live-action Disney remake. At this point, as much money as they make, people might just be numb to them because there's no point to them existing beyond Disney opening their vault to see what they can whip up for some cash. Shouldn't that be the prevailing conversation?

To me its not a surprise or anything, the neckbeards cling onto the last remnants of their small minded worldview because its crumbling more and more.
So they get more angry, more hatefull and all that...so much that every other issues is drowned out.

And that is really annoying because imagine this being in general incredible colorful and bright in terms of visuals...how it would look.
I mean look at Aquaman, how incredible the underwater world looks...then you have this.
Something that is seemingly afraid to use color.

But all we have is whiny babies crying that a Fictional Mermaid character in a live action adaption of a childrens cartoon...is played by a black woman.

No one's ever been able to accuse the anti-woke crowd of being reasonable.

Lol dwarves and mermaids don't make much sense. If those fantasy creatures are acceptable, ethnicity shouldn't be an issue.
Even fantasy needs some internal logic. It's world building. Pigment exists as a reaction to uv light.

And as for dwarves and mermaids existing, have you seen the evolutionary record of our own planet? A hobbit like human species existed at one time, dwarfism exists in homo sapiens, and aquatic mammal species do exist on our planet. Nature would be a lot more weird about it, but an aquatic ape evolving wouldnt be outside the realm of possibility.

That's not logic. If it was really all about pigment/melanin and the lack thereof, why would mermaids be Caucasian when Caucasians have melanin? So if white mermaids are okay, so are Black ones (and Asian, Latino, etc).

And there are black people with the condition. But obviously this conversation was not about the real world condition, but the fantasy beings, commonly known for making weapons, etc. And fantasy beings aren't dictated by any one person's limited imagination.

Has anyone avoided the "obvious issues" of the others? Most people just had fun with them, because they are nostalgia bait. I've enjoyed BatB, Jungle Book, Cruella, Pinocchio, and Cinderella quite a lot. All of them have issues, but that's what I expected. Because these are live action remakes of animated flicks, intended for children, now intended for the adult who remembers seeing them as children.

This is why I don't think there is much actual discussion about the "issues" because most know what they are there for, and they get it. I'm not excited for this. I think it looks bad. But I also know that isn't what the discussion about it will be like, because trash comes out of these studios all the time, and the only time a real fuss is made about them is when things get bigoted.

When you are making the arguments racists are making, perhaps you should look at where you are standing.

The whole conversation around this movie would be so much easier if people just admitted they had a crush on a white cartoon character, and now don't because they aren't attracted to dark skin black women. Which you know, is fine. It really is. You can't help attraction. But the mental gymnastics, down to the pseudoscience to explain a FLIPPIN' MERMAID is just is the peak of gaslighting.

I mean, that is absolutely going to be the main points when people start talking about the lack of the clamshells.

On a child. Or at least, she was in the old movie. Looking up the age of our lead here, she's 22. Which means a lot of grown men are going to have to admit they aren't getting what they came for from an actress who was barely old enough to drink when they made this. Anyways...

Never get the "Its not pedophilia, its ephobilia" speech? And I have seen enough of a certain type of anime discussion to think you are a bit hopeful there.

Thank god for the mods on this site.

I lived through the Bryan Singer stuff, so yeah, I've heard it, sadly.

It is also almost universally agreed upon to be the bad Renaissance movie, so even if it wasn't problematic it would probably struggle.

Want to see a good Pocahontas movie, watch this one:

I honestly can't remember much about the flick, outside of the music. Which indeed, still slaps, but that is pretty much all Disney movies of that era.

The ignorance and the audacity on this last page in some of these posts is just astounding. But such is the internet.

Anyway, I was minding my own business on FB and noticed that someone leaked the whole “Part of Your World” scene. Halle ATE that song.

But someone from Disney is getting fired.

I mean, nothing has really sold me on seeing this in theaters. But, I am pretty certain I am getting the soundtrack day 1.

I finally watched the trailer for this, and it looks pretty. Halle is fine in the role. But... these live action remakes of the animated movies are lazy cash grabs. There is artistic merit in adapting these fairy tales with the summer blockbuster level effects, but there is nothing artistic or creative in just remaking old cartoons with CGI and actors instead of doing a real artistic and modern adaption of the original stories.

I would love A Little Mermaid movie that is closer to the book, or takes a different approach to Ariel and the other mermaids (giving them a more Shape Of Water like appearance, with the magic spell used to turn Ariel human instead of just giving her legs, which would be a cool contrast). I would rather see that then movies like the live action Lion King where the animals can't emote.

I am of the opinion that Atlantis, as stylish and ambitious as it is, is almost too ambitious for the the medium and limited runtime to fully explore all of the crazy ideas it has on its mind. I mean, a large cast of characters and the entire culture of Atlantis, in just 90+ minutes? That was never going to work, no matter how you slice it.

If they are going to tackle that again, if they really want to do it right, they need to do it as a 8-10 episode series on Disney+. It would give them that needed track and space to really develop all of the characters and really dig deep into the world and lore of the lost city of Atlantis.

And, if you really want to get on everybody’s good side, bring on Guillermo Del Toro as a producer and visual Director. Applying his clockwork punk style to some thing like this? That’s money right there.
