Live-Action The Little Mermaid

Racism is definitely a big part of it. But that's just my take.

It's pretty clear it is, esp overseas.

But this is also an example of Disney not doing what is best for the film and moving its release date. I went from not going to the movies in like 4 months to going 4 weeks in a row to a different movie being released, all franchise blockbuster films.

I don't see it going sub $500M unless it completely falls off a cliff domestically which would be really surprising at this point considering its actually doing pretty well on that front, especially if it ends up over $300M.

Those OS numbers are brutal though and are what's making its performance look even worse and I honestly why the racial factor is definitely a part of it I also don't think Disney's lackluster marketing helped it either.

Say what you will about TLK as a movie, but the marketing for that made it feel like an EVENT and I would also say the same about BATB and Aladdin too which all went on to make over $1B WW.

I think the Disney live action remakes have lost a big part of their steam, especially since Disney has been struggling to make a good movie out of them for years.

It’s going to do Aladdin numbers domestically, which is pretty impressive considering that had Will Smith in it. Yeah, overseas is the issue I guess.

What’s their next theatrical remake? Snow White? I can’t see that doing all that well. Or at least Cruella numbers maybe. They don’t really have any BIG Disney remake after this, I don’t think. Maybe Moana whenever that comes out. And the inevitable Frozen remake.

$500m WW is pretty much guaranteed. TLM currently sits at $414.2m with $228.8m domestic and $185.4m overseas.

A week ago I though there was still a shot at $600m, but now $550m looks to be the the highest it could reach even if it can get some legs in the overseas markets.
Another problem it faces is losing screens over the next few weeks. It will lose more screens than it would if it was putting up bigger numbers.

The Flash and Elemental both open next week and both will take up a significant number of screens. A lot should come from Fast X, which is also under performing.
After next week there's some breathing room with just 2 modest movies (Asteroid City and No Hard Feelings) then the following week Indiana Jones and Teenage Kraken.

Yeah it’s racism. The movie is currently at 414 million and has been holding great it’s definitely gonna pass 500mill. I think I read 640 is still in play considering it’s legs so far. And it had the best debut for a Disney movie in Japan post Covid even beating Avatar2. But all the studios should feel dumb for how they stacked June.

For once WB may come out on top with The Flash being the last big movie release until Mid-late July.

After that first trailer i would have bet the farm on this making 1.3-1.5 billion at the BO. Good thing i dont own a farm lol

Just got home from seeing it and I liked it a lot more than I expected to! It did feel a little long and the climax is a bit much but other than that, I enjoyed it. Halle Bailey was fantastic, I couldn't keep my eyes off of her on screen and I may or may not have developed a little crush :funny:

I think it's pretty easily the best live action renaissance remake. Aladdin is the only one that comes close.

Hercules or even Tarzan would be great next.

I'm not up to date but good to hear that it can do Aladdin numbers domestically at least.

Frozen could be huge if they get the snowy visuals right.

The DisneyMusicVEVO YouTube channel has been putting out most of the full musical numbers from this on YouTube over the past few weeks and I have to ask...why put the main attractions out there for free when the movie is still out in theaters?

It is getting pretty late in it's run now and there's maybe $50m WW left in its run so it doesn't affect boxoffice, if anything it may actually help a bit. All the songs from Frozen and Moana were up on youtube way before the movies ended their theatrical run.

I enjoyed the film but im still confused how they added an hour to it from the animated version yet Ursula/Vanessa doesnt get any real extra time.

Yeah I hate that it only had one week in IMAX as I wanted to go back and see it in that format.

Yeah since so many people said they didn’t like it and I loved it, I’m wondering if it was made for imax so I’m one of the few that got the full experience. Like people said it was colourless which it definitely wasn’t when I saw it

I mean it got an A cinema score and is currently at a 94% verified audience score so I’d say it was well liked by most who actually watched it. I read a lot of reviews that said it was more colorful than the trailers made it seem which wasn’t a surprise as the scenes in the trailer that were dark were also dark in the animated movie. I saw it in IMAX my first time I just wanted to see it again there.
