"The Wolverine" seemed like a standalone in spite that it exists in the X-Men Universe. One of the reasons I liked the movie because it wasn't insistent on ahving cameos or making so many references to the X-Men world.
"X-Men Origins"...seriously, I hated that title, and it really undermines the character when you have his title name come second after a colon, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"
I think part of the reason the movie failed a great deal wasn't just because of the leaked rough cut, and it wasn't jsut because the film itself sucked too, but it was just for the fact that it was called, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" rather than just "Wolverine".
The whole point of the spin-off is to use a famous character from the X-Men movies and give him his own. Mark Twain didn't call his Huck Finn spinoff: "Tom Sawyer Friends: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn".
20th Century Fox was so worried the audience wouldn't know who Wolverine was unless they reminded us he's that same guy from X-Men. Yeah, we f**king know.
The film didn't suck because of the title, but I think that's part of the reason why it didn't do well at the box office. "Wolverine" could have at least topped the box office the opening week without "X-Men Origins" in the title.
I watched snippets of the film recently and noticed how bad the FX were. The plane ride fx looked so cartoony. I didn't realize how bad the adamantium claws looked either. Overall, the FX didn't look that much different from the incompleted leaked cut.
