Mystery/Thriller LOST - But Not Forgotten...Except by the Emmys - Part 1

I was just a bit let down that Aaron, Ji Yeon and Walt were not mentioned as Candidates explicitly in the show, but they were probably Candidates for Hurley.

Walt could just astrally project, have visions, and had a certain energy about him that caused birds to become disoriented (electromagnetic energies), a certain energy that also aligned Walt with instances of synchronicity (like the comic book polar bear). And we all know that the Island had that kind of energy itself. Like John Locke, Walt knew he belonged in the Island, that's why Ben got rid of him, because Walt was special and a future leader or Richard Alpert.

I myself was happy that the Island's real purpose was left so ambiguous. I can think about what fits for me I guess.

I think the Island was the exit point, a portal of sorts, through the Light, to certain points on Earth, even to the Sideways and beyond. That's why there were so many Whisperers hanging out, unable or unwilling to go. If the Light goes out on the Earth, no consciousness could travel trough, and the light extinguishes everywhere, all that is left in this world would be the way to darkness, or Hell. Whatever Light was left inside the Man in Black left him to go back to the Source, and since Jacob per the rules could not kill him, his body and dark Soul (Smoke) was left in the Island.

The Island was a physical manifestation of redemption, giving many the opportunity to attain it, some failing, many finding what they were looking for, for better or worse, and once their purpose in life is done, death, and see ya in the Sideways.

I think the Walt thing is a bummer because they actually do explain why Miles has those powers, essentially because he was around all that electromagnetic stuff from birth due to his dad. I'd really like to hear what their plan for Walt was that they had to ditch due to his growing up too fast.

It's funny though, you keep hearing about people complaining about no answers, but when you sit down and try to think of what was left out, barring an answer on exactly what the island is, there really weren't that many threads left unexplained.

Maybe one problem is that Brian K Vaughan left the show after the fifth season (of Y the Last Man and Ex Machina fame). I think he was a big reason for a lot of the cool stuff that was set up in seasons 3-5 regarding Jacob et al.

Watch "The New Man in Charge" epilogue. It addresses Walt's purpose in regards to the island.

Well, I think Walt was one, but you can't really blame the producers for the kid hitting puberty so quickly. But I think what hurt most of the people that weren't happy with the ending is that they were hoping they would get a better idea of what the island was. Going in the second time knowing that they were going to let it remain vague made it easier to appreciate the emotional ending.

Yeah, Walt is the main one with his 'make things happen' mojo and teleportation voodoo. As for what the island is, didn't they pretty much confirm that it was a place to keep the evil at bay, as far as the major events of the show go?

Yup, that's the best explanation they will ever give us too I think. I remember Damon talking about the Island and how people always ask 'well why can the Island do this?' or 'why is this happening on the Island?' and he pretty much said that when you watch Star Wars you don't go asking them to explain The Force..it just is. Same goes with the Island.

But yeah, keeping the evil trapped on the Island was it's main purpose.

The creators talk more about the island than I ever thought they would. They kept maintaining throughout that the island would be the one thing that would remain a mystery.

They said it was like not knowing how the force worked in Star Wars. The force was so much more awesome before you found out it was just a bunch of midichlorians.

Yeah that's I tell people who are pissed off that we dont know what the Island, that the Island is a breeding ground for midichlorians. Both if they dont piss me off then I'll just say the Island is on a massive pocket of electromagnetic energy that has its own will. Kinda like Galactus cloud in FF. Which is basically the truth.

It didn't deserve to win an emmy for its last season.. I'm glad they didn't win just because it was their last season. Emmys should be handed out to the best show not the show that's going off the air. Besides, it's already won ?

It doesn't really though, clearly that wasn't the original intention for Walt, and I don't think the epilogue was written by any of Lost's actual writers, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm fine with how much the island is explained, although I was a little let down by the episode about Jacob and his brother's birth though. Why bother going that far back if you're not going to reveal anything really. The electromagnetic stuff is enough to explain how the island does most of its stuff for me, but I can see why some people were not happy they didn't explain all the trapped evil/light stuff, since most everything on the show had some sort of scientific explanation up to that point.

I don't see how Walt being the protector of the island goes against any original plans for the character, and even if it does, that idea definitely works.

I know this isnt directly related to Lost, but I thought I'd repost this here for any Harry Potter fans. I didn't know Damon was a Harry Potter fan. He weighs in on why Voldemort is the greatest villian of all time.

Yep. I believe he and Carlton once said that the overall set-up of the HP series was an inspiration for how they set up the series, with a long, continuous story arc, but every book (or season, in LOST's case) having it's own story.

I didn't know that. That's really cool.

It doesn't contradict, but I'm sure Darleton had something bigger originally planned if the actor's growth hadn't screwed them. By the time Jack and Hurley had already been protectors of the island, saying that's all Walt was, was definitely anti climactic, based on what they seemed to be setting up. I don't blame them though, they rolled with it greatly, I'm just saying I'd be really interested in knowing what they originally had planned, even if it was more of a vague concept at that point.

Me as well. I'd also like to know the direction Mr. Eko's character was going in. I've heard he was supposed to have John Locke's role at the end.

Yeah, heard that too, but that one I'm actually glad about, Terry O'Quinn was goddamn amazing playing his dual roles, and I can't imagine someone doing better.

any chance of a spin-off, or a show about the past?

That was ****ing awesome. I want that in HD now
