I was just a bit let down that Aaron, Ji Yeon and Walt were not mentioned as Candidates explicitly in the show, but they were probably Candidates for Hurley.
Walt could just astrally project, have visions, and had a certain energy about him that caused birds to become disoriented (electromagnetic energies), a certain energy that also aligned Walt with instances of synchronicity (like the comic book polar bear). And we all know that the Island had that kind of energy itself. Like John Locke, Walt knew he belonged in the Island, that's why Ben got rid of him, because Walt was special and a future leader or Richard Alpert.
I myself was happy that the Island's real purpose was left so ambiguous. I can think about what fits for me I guess.
I think the Island was the exit point, a portal of sorts, through the Light, to certain points on Earth, even to the Sideways and beyond. That's why there were so many Whisperers hanging out, unable or unwilling to go. If the Light goes out on the Earth, no consciousness could travel trough, and the light extinguishes everywhere, all that is left in this world would be the way to darkness, or Hell. Whatever Light was left inside the Man in Black left him to go back to the Source, and since Jacob per the rules could not kill him, his body and dark Soul (Smoke) was left in the Island.
The Island was a physical manifestation of redemption, giving many the opportunity to attain it, some failing, many finding what they were looking for, for better or worse, and once their purpose in life is done, death, and see ya in the Sideways.
