The Dark Knight Rises Mad as a Hatter:The Official Jervis Tetch Thread

I prefer the idea of Tetch's move into crime to be nothing but the work of someone extremely deranged. Not all bad people suffer loss and pain, sometimes they're just born bad.
With Tetch I think this is the case. He's a nerdy guy, a computer technician who can't hold down a job and has no friends or life. He knows he's lonely but blames everyone else. Because, obviousy, it can't be his fault.
So, he decides to make himself some friends. He leads a small human trafficking ring but embodies the new class of freaks. He doesn't sell the people into sexual slavery or anything you might expect. But instead locks them in an abandoned apartment complex and experiments with his brainwashing techniques.
Seriously, this guy could be a great villain.
How would Batman deal with him if he had a circle of drones around him with guns in their mouths?
Batman tries to take Tetch down and all those people will kill themselves.
There's a lot of possibilities for the character. But not as a main villain. I think he should be someone Batman takes down at the start of the movie.
I don't think you even need to explore his motivations, he's just a freak who Batman has to deal with.

Yes that is a simple idea aswell.

He can be a side line character but again he also can be a big player given a good script etc.

The Riddler, Penguin, & Catwoman are perhaps more popular but was Ra's Al Ghul as big as the ones mentioned. His character seened to suit BB and Scarecrow in my eyes could have had a bigger role to play more scenes is what I'm saying.

MH can have his day also but a Nolan twist may be out there already in planning.

:woot::huh::grin:

No, not really. Charles Manson was pure evil but Tetch is essentially a gibbering idiot. There's no reason for his behaviour but he's such a pathetic figure and his goals are so childish that one could easily pity him.
Not so much for Charles Manson, he was a devil, he really was.

That's not really what I'm getting at...

I'm getting at the fact that he manipulated people to commit horrible crimes, yet did none of them himself. So, when it all came around to Manson, it was hard to pin it on him as anything other than a conspirator (I may be wrong about this).

Ah, but when we see him he'd already have his drones.
Leading the audience to wonder just how long that sicko has been doing it. I think that's a cilling thought, that it isn't something he's just done, he's been at it for some time and in a place like Gotham it got ignored.

Interesting...

Perhaps it starts off with a crime spree that eyewitness accounts say were perpetrated by stiff, seemingly mind-less criminals, then the audience is shown theese criminals. And they look completely controlled.

Mad Hatter later eludes to how he's brainwashed them technologically, but he never goes into much detail.

A Nolan realismite is now remedied.:cwink:

What about making Mad Hatter like Shredder in the original TMNT movie? Manipulating children to commit crimes like robberies for him.

i think a hypnosis route would be cool. Maybe send out children as human bombs to kill the Batman, etc.

^ Lol, children suicide bombers? :hehe:
Sorry but I highly doubt we'd see that in a Batman film. It would be really hard for them to get their desired PG-13 rating if they did.

I think it is interesting to have mad hatter - whether they go with the pedophile angle or not but I can only see it as a step down in the franchise's "epicness"

First we have Ra's Al Ghul and the league of shadows, then we have Joker spreading chaos through out all of Gotham....then madhatter? The only way he could work is a really small cameo. Maybe just mention what he does, show his face but thats it. I don't even think he needs a cameo like Scarecrow's in TDK.

^i agree. I don't even think he should be included. I was just saying that if the writers/director wanted him in that would be a good route.

And the kids wouldn't blow up...Batman would save them :cwink:

Glad to see so much interest in this character, even though we have different views on how he should be protrayed. I'm really pulling for him to finally be put on screen.

Or maybe he'd redirect them back to their starting point and cause them to detonate around the Mad Hatter, while he uses his Bats to make Tetch fall back into the toxic pool behind him. Oh wait, that's Batman Returns.

In a previous thread Adengo was saying that a good idea would be to have Mad Hatter kidnapping little girls in an attempt to find "the right Alice." When each child isn't right, he kills them, and possibly Gordon's daughter Barbara could be one of his "Alice's"

I thought that was a great idea! In addition, if you did a Riddler/Mad Hatter pair-up, you could make Mad Hatter a completely desperate and insane character who asks Nigma to come up with a device for him to make the Alice "work." Then you could sort of mix in the whole mind control thing into it. I'm not sure what Nigma would get in return for this, though. Maybe Nigma is the one who actually goes to the Hatter, and tells him he will create a device for him to find his 'right Alice.' He could then convince Hatter that Barbara Gordon is the 'right Alice.' Nigma knows the connection/relationship Batman and Jim Gordon share, and sees this as the ultimate test to prove he is smarter than the Bat, by challenging him to a chase of sorts through Gotham, with the promise that if he (Batman) can solve (and survive) his puzzles all the way to the end and match wits with "The Riddler," he will reveal where Barbara is...?

One idea that i heard about Mad Hatter that I've loved is this.

Have Hatter be a single father with a little daughter named Alice. Alice loves the story Alice in Wonderland, and Jervis will frequently dress up as the Mad Hatter for her. One day, while Jervis and Alice are walking in the park, a mugger comes by. In the resulting scuffle, Alice gets killed and Jervis get hit hard on the head.

The head injury and the loss of Alice cause Jervis to loose it. He goes nuts, adopting the personality of the Hatter and going on a search "looking" for his Alice. He captures any little girl that resembles his daughter, forcing them to play tea party with him like he did with his daughter. When he finally realizes the girl's he's captured aren't his daughter, he goes into a rage and kills the girls thinking that they are trying to trick him, and somehow keep him away from his Alice.

So in this take, Tetch is really just a parent who can't face reality, in a never ending search for the daughter he'll never find.

I really like this idea Infinity but the only problem is, with Nolan, he's not going to want to waste time going into a villians past like that.

If someone else takes the reins though and goes back to the formula of showing the villians origins like how Burton did it, I would definitely welcome that approach.

Also, after TDK I would really like the possible third film to focus waaay more on Batman this time around. I hope he uses a bit of his formula and atmosphere from BB, I understand Joker and Two Face are major villians that need their screentime but I think the atmosphere and the fact that BB focused on Bruce's journey are why I still like it a bit better than TDK.

Thanks man. And honestly, I would be surprised if I ever saw a Hatter treatment like my idea in Nolan's movies, simply because at this point, he's probably going to want to go with a much more large-scale villain. My Hatter story would be much more personal, especially because I would add the connection of Jarvis being an employee of Bruce's who Bruce was fond of. Make it a more character story.

I think it would work best in a series format, either in comics or a television show.

I dont think we'll ever see the Mad Hatter as long as Nolan is directing. Now Burton on the other hand wouldnt hesitate. He would just put Batman in his Alice in Wonderland movie, Johnny Depp (oh wait, he is already in AiW), his wife (oops... her too) and some necessary nightmare fuel. And presto!

I would like to see Steve Buscemi as The Mad Hatter.

Well, human trafficking is a pretty big deal right now. That is an angle that might work. Someone suggested him playing this type of role in Gotham. They suggested his ring be referred to as "Wonderland". I can't see Nolan going with this character, but that doesn't mean I don't think it could be done, and done well.

I would say Martin Short, but the dude's pushing 60. I think he would have been good about 15 years ago.

Michael Emerson would be a great Mad Hatter, IMO. He has a creepy look and presence to him that would be a must for the Hatter.

Posted in the other hatter thread that got closed....

Just reading up on mad hatter (i'm not exactly an expert on the character)
He could work...
A man with a fixation with "Alice in wonderland" kidnapping young girls (not sure if kidnapping and murder of young girls would be a step too far for Nolan)..
Essentially in this universe Hatter is trying to find "Alice".. Each time he thinks he's found her but eachtime "Alice" dissapoints him, causing him to dispatch of this "Alice" and then go hunting for a new one...

As a tool to introduce new characters perhaps Barbara Gordon could be one of his "Alices".

Too dark perhaps?

Mad Hatter is the character that gets the weirdest casting suggestions.
