Mad Max: Fury Road - Part 2

Can anyone explain what is going on with Tom Hardy's voice for this film?

This is one of the more normal voices Hardy has done in a movie.

His accent sounds a little wobbly between English/Australian (?) and sort of American at times, but I don't think he sounds that weird.

There's nothing normal about it. Like it sounds like he's using a bad accent on purpose.

*shrugs*

It doesn't sound that weird to me, but I'd just chalk it up to Hardy indulging his thing for weird voices and generally being incapable or uninterested in playing any character in a normal way. A Hardy character being kinda weird is par for the course.

Except in This Means War.

I can't tell much about his accent to be honest, but I haven't heard him speak that much either in the trailers.

This is exactly what I'm saying. OK you are OK with it but even you are saying it sounds wobbly and sort of American, so you can see why I find it rather weird and offputting doncha?

Yea, true. He was like, Joe Shmoe normal in that. He also said he was miserable during filming and would never do a movie like that again.

But yea....The Dark Knight Rises, Lawless, The Drop, that crazy Russian accent in Child 44. Hardy likes his voices and quirky isms.

Sure, I guess. It doesn't bother me or sound that extreme to me, but stuff like that is subjective.

Reportedly he barely speaks in the film, so I doubt it'll be a big deal.

After all, Mel only had like 16 lines in Road Warrior.

And just to be clear, I want to see this movie, and I think Tom Hardy is a tremendous actor. But I still think this is an impulse someone should've stamped down. Miller should've told him pick an accent and stick with it.

It's almost like Tom Hardy grew up with the American dub of Mad Max and then watched Road Warrior and was like..."You know what? I'm going to mash everything together with my own accent and it will be like I'm playing Mel Toibsardy!"

Honestly, I love Hardy, but he's kind of a campy actor, or can be when he's not reined in. Christopher Nolan let him go all kinds of crazy in TDKR.

I mean, he got the inspiration for Bane's voice from an Irish gypsy boxer. Why? Who knows.

I don't expect him to speak a soliloquy or anything. Max has always been a man of few words who speaks more through his actions than through words.

But look, people spend years making fun of bad movie accents. It's not my fault.

I haven't watched any of the clips. Trying to keep myself relatively unspoiled...

Apart from an indecisive accent, which isn't that uncommon in movies, I honestly don't think he sounds weird.

I was almost more distracted by the odd way Charlize Theron pronounced gasoline.

I just chalk that up to slang in the post-apocalyptic world. Not gasoline, guzzoline.

Plus, isn't George Miller a big pro-environmental type? Guzzoline makes sense as something he would write in.

Maybe accents have developed into something else after the apocalypse :funny:
