More than likely they don't like what they see and want to minimize financial losses while also keeping Cavill out of the spotlight of a potential bomb

How can they think it will bomb? It has less of a failure written all over it than the Fantastic Four, which is being released in July 2015.

If they thought UNCLE would flop, then they shouldn't have approved it in the first place or should have ensured it was a better script.

Because they've probably seen a first cut and thought it sucked.

They needed a big star for this if the script is not that good. Let's face it: Neither Cavill or Hammer are at the Cruise level (who was the last A-lister rumored for it). Didn't they bring this project up to almost every A-Lister and no one took it (except for Cruise who eventually backed out)?

They put it in January/graveyard territory so obviously they don't think it will do well. That's pretty incontestable.

That's hindsight. Doesn't factor in the reality that the movie was already made and now they're into the marketing portion of it.

Yep. They tried selling it to a lot of people with no takers. Should have been the first indicator that something was wrong with it.

Any chance that they bring the two original actors back for cameos? I don't know what Robert Vaughan is doing these days but David McCallum is fairly busy these days.

True. On the flip side, some movies that don't test well end up doing well at the box office (I think Steven Soderbergh says Magic Mike didn't test well twice, and yet it became a hit). Not saying that always happens, but you never know.

At least they're not releasing it in September. That would've been even more dire.

But Man from Uncle doesn't feature male strippers or Tatum/McConaughtney, which was why it became a hit.

All that time filming it and it's already seemingly considered a flop before it's even come out. Not good for Hammer especially, after the Lone Ranger.

Can't argue with that, it's not like he has a franchise or great work in some small critically acclaimed film to fall back on. I like Hammer as well as Superman so of course I hope that this film bucks the January action movie trend and does decently.

Is this going to end up cut down in film length and also critically panned like The Avengers in 1998?

Well, this is a shame, but not totally shocking. Oh well, expectations adjusted accordingly.

Well, I suppose it's possible that the release date could be because this is a bit of an obscure property. Man from UNCLE was a popular TV series in its day, yes, but so was The A-Team, and that movie wasn't a hit, AND it had bigger names in two of the lead roles. I also think that setting the film in the 1960s is risky; most spy/action thrillers are contemporary pieces. Not saying it's a bad thing that it's set back in time; it could have a lot of style but there are some moviegoers who loathe period pieces for whatever reason. Additionally, the film lacks major star power. So it could be that WB viewed this film the way that Paramount viewed Jack Ryan and thought that the best time to release it would be after all of the big Christmas blockbusters are winding down.

OR they might just think it's going to suck. I don't know. Just saying that this release date MIGHT not mean the movie is a turd. For Cavill's sake, I hope it's good.

I thought Jack Ryan was supposed to be released at Christmas time. What happened?

I'm not entirely sure but I'm guessing that they realized that opening it against films like The Hobbit and Frozen would have been a death sentence.

Wolf of Wall Street had a small part with it moving to January too (it took its Dec spot).

What would Man from UNCLE have been up against in the Fall/ December 2014?

Are more of you disappointed that moving to January will hurt it's BO potential or that the fact it was moved to January signals the studio doesn't have great faith in it?

I believe most feel like it's not showing a lot of faith in the film by the studio.
Could be the case, could not…I guess we'll see.

More the latter. I think this film's box office potential would be up in the air no matter what, but January/February tends to be a dumping ground for crap. Not all the time though; you do have your outliers like Shutter Island.

Would people here even care about the release date if it doesn't star Cavill? :oldrazz:

Definitely the latter. It sounds like it probably isn't a very good movie, which is a shame. Looks like another one of these TV series adaptations that don't work out so well. It had the potential to be something decent.

My source told me it was moved to early 2015 because it was clashing with too many films in Nov/Dec plus producers saw first screening yesterday, to see what needs editing or reworking!:yay:
