Yup. If the setting is modernized then the characters (names and all) will be modernized too to appeal to as broad an audience as possible. At the end of the day I think they'll go for a straight up contemporary 007 film just with two Bonds

I don't see why they even bother to make The Man From UNCLE then if it is altered so much that it only retains the name. They could just make an original spy franchise with two partners who don't like each other. Would give them more freedom and wouldn't upset any fans of the original.

Is this going to be similar to Get Smart?
Well, the original series was basically the show that Get Smart was spoofing, so if they add a more comedic bent ala Sherlock Holmes, then sure, it could end up resembling Get Smart quite a bit.

Well it's going to be a comedy so...

It sounds like it's going to be more like Seasons 2 and 3 of the original series where it became more light hearted. Not that Seasons 1 and 4 were ever so dark. I think a 70s Roger Moore Bond tone is probably what it might go for than a Daniel Craig or Timothy Dalton serious and gritty thriller vibe.

Hmmm...the first season is the only one I saw, so I didn't know it got more light-hearted in the later seasons. Interesting.

It's kind of a bit like how Starksy & Hutch was a more serious police thriller show in the first season and became more light-hearted melodrama from seasons 2 onwards (with the music reflecting that). Then the Starksy & Hutch movie's tone was more like those later seasons - in fact more like a Season 4 episode where it was quite undemanding viewing and more of an emphasis on comedy.

The Man from UNCLE became more campy and slapstick from seasons 2 onwards, particularly by season 3 which even had this funky saxophone version of the theme. It was probably a bit more like the 60s Batman show and even had Napoleon Solo doing things like dancing with a gorilla. The arrangement of the musical theme (and scores) also reflected the tone of the show.

I hope the movie is more like Season 1.

i hope its not serious. enough with the dark serious movies. we need more fun action movies with two actors that have chemistry.

i think Hammer and Cavill will be good together. Hammer will be more goofy and Cavill serious.

I'd rather it be the other way around.

But also with Hammer eliminated entirely. :o

I'm thinking that as well.:yay:

Aww, I like Hammer as an actor. I love Cavill as Supes but I don't think he could do full on goofy. I'd like to be proven wrong of course.

Oh, it's nothing against Hammer, I just want 100% Cavill. :o

if Cavill will be the funny character in the movie than the guy can act. act for real.

of course this film wont be overly serious guy ritchie did do sherlock holmes lol

So you don't really want it faithful to the original show then with the two characters Solo and Kuryakin.

If it takes a Season 1 tone, then it should be fine. The show was never very serious in the first place but always fairly light hearted. It just shouldn't become like Season 3 which is more like the Adam West Batman show.

Does Guy Richie seem like the type to do an Adam West Batman type of film? Honestly I found Sherlock Holmes annoying and silly but it never got "that" silly.

if it has Sherlock holmes humor im okay with it.but if its a straight up comedy I think its a complete waste of time with these 2 actors

What's wrong with a straight up comedy? I'm all for an action-comedy.

I would rather see a fun spy flick laced with comedic elements. But straight up comedies of old serious-toned TV shows is incredibly passé and misguided. Especially with the history of 60's-70's TV shows that were adapted into films in the past two decades.

I consider Mission Impossible lucky as Hell as a film franchise.

comedy wise, i hope it's similar to Sherlock Holmes and Snatch. some funny moments and dialogue, but not straight up comedy.

I agree. I stand by the notion that if an actor can't do comedy, then he really can't act. I know I might be getting a lot of hate, but I don't care. I'm still waiting for Daniel Day Lewis to show his comedic chops. Get outside of his comfort zone.
