The Last Jedi Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker (VIII)

I'm very excited by Luke getting an expanded role in this. Looking forward to seeing what will happen with him there.

It seems the problem Michael Arndt had was when using Luke Skywalker, whenever he came in, he would have him take over the whole thing, and the new characters were losing the spotlight as a result.

Whatever Rey did with the Force would have looked less impressive if Luke was using the Force throughout the movie. "I don't want to see Rey dabbling with the Force! I want to see Luke fighting x or doing y with the Force!" That's a distraction when you're just only introducing new characters.

I think one of the things I liked about VII that separates it from I and IV is that the mentor figure wasn't a Jedi. You put Luke in Han Solo's VII role and suddenly it's even more a remake than it already was of IV. But it does now fit the pattern of the Skywalker character not being the first mentor (and the most famous actor being the mentor - Hamill is not as famous as Ford) instead of breaking that other pattern.

Ready for another 1 minute scene before the credits with Luke Skywalker in Epiosde 8 :)

Does that early video mean this will be the first Star Wars movie to literally pick up from the end of the last one?

Just wondering how we should take it.

I think that would be interesting by the way. I'm fine if Rian Johnson and co. want to explore some new ideas and conventions this time.

Yeah, Daisy said something about the surreal nature of going back to Skellig and shooting similar stuff as in TFA. It'll probably pick up from there. Which is fine by me.

I hope Laura Dern is revealed that she is Mara jade

Damn, I'm in self exile for only a few months and I've already got a replacement!? I love your optimism and use of pictures. I love this picture by the way

Hamill filming the Forceback scene in TFA. Very PT'ish:

Awesome concept art on the right:

Oh, f**k ya!

And Apollo, Dern's most probably a (mostly ineffective) Resistance Admiral/General/Leader.

wonder if Luke still has the same green lightsaber from ROTJ

That concept art implies that (not that it actually proves anything).

Well Luke can't really rebuild the Jedi Temple all by himself now can he?

I am going to flip my **** when we see Luke wielding a lightsaber again.

Hell, the second he grabs the hilt from his belt, noises will be made in the theater.

I will cry. It will be pathetic and I hope my future wife does not see it. :funny:

Does anybody else want to see Luke pull a reverse of the ESB Bespin Duel on a Knight of Ren? Just utterly dominate a fight, not just physically, but mentally and spiritually as well?

I mean, the ROTJ Duel was pretty close to that for a while, when Luke was still calm and in control, trying to argue his father down, and while it kind of worked, his methods left him vulnerable to Vader igniting the dark side in him with a few taunts. I'd love to see him finish a duel with words in the same cool, collected tone, and leave a dark siders believe in its strength haunted by doubts at minimum, and possibly driven back to the light at maximum. Give him a badguy dealing with a struggle between his conscience and his beliefs, and have Luke shatter the beliefs...

...Or maybe have it be Rey he talks back to the light. Have her struggle with aggression, come close to murdering a Knight of Ren, and then have Luke disarm her and finally embrace his ROTJ beliefs that you can defeat the darkness. Maybe even make it the moment where he resolidifies himself as a Jedi Master, and not just as a Knight.

Well, at this point Luke is possibly the most powerful guy in the galaxy. Maybe only Snoke can match him. So anyone he fights he's going to dominate.

In the TFA novelization in a scene cut from the film Snoke seems genuinely scared of Luke joining the Resistance. Snoke wants to entirely destroy the system the Resistance Base is in instead of locating the planet they are on because taking time to locate the exact planet might give the Resistance time to copy and disseminate the map that leads to Luke. Snoke doesn't even want the map to find Luke. He just wants to make sure no one can find Luke and recruit him into fighting the First Order.

Of course, Rian could change this since that dialogue was cut from the film, but if he doesn't then it's a definite possibility that Luke is more powerful than Snoke. Luke may have even been the one that ****ed up Snoke's neck and face.

Skin-on-skin noises?

I wish they'd kept that line, since it would help build Luke's legend more than what we got.

Still, I'm just hoping Luke isn't some kind of underdog or half-mad like in Arndt's version. I have a feeling the whole Rey/Luke part of the movie will be the two of them racing to get to the Resistance base or fleet, with Luke training Rey in the process.

Anyone else kinda hoping Luke cleans up a bit in this film? Cut the hair, trim the beard?

I thought that as well but there are some pre-vis shots of Snoke in the behind the scenes stuff that shows his body underneath the robe and he's very contorted and deformed. Like extreme scoliosis and emaciation. So I think it's more than battle scars, it's the dark side destroying his corporeal form.
