The Last Jedi Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker (VIII)

The [BLACKOUT]force projection non-fight[/BLACKOUT] felt consistent with the ethic of nonviolence that was apart of Yoda's teachings, and what Luke embraced in his final conflict with Vader and the Emperor. I do wish there had been some kind of foreshadowing of it though, because it comes out of nowhere and asks the audience to accept a fair amount. I understand why some people felt cheated by it.

Luke displayed powers beyond what we've seen any force user do in any of the films including Yoda.

Luke becoming one with the force was perfect with him looking out to the horizon, returning him to the Luke we always knew

This film has the boldness to deal with mistakes that people make that Lucas refused to address in the prequels. The way Lucas did the prequels Yoda and the Jedi council were portrayed as complete idiots. This film at least tries to deal with the realities of failure, and coming to terms with it, and I thought it did so beautifully.

Agree with that too. The twin sunset moment was a total homage to the same Luke moment back in ANH.

Yoda's ghost summoning a lightning bolt was cool, but projection across galactic distances is pretty awesome .

Okay, for comparison's sake in Logan he only really gets over himself and stops being an ******* at the very end.

Luke doesn't wait until he's actually dying to reach the same point and takes the time to connect with Leia before the end ( kind of wish he'd had a similar moment with Rey - " See you around kid." was perfect.

Anyway, it means that Luke's end is a grand exit, on an uplifting note - I would be so bold as to suggest it one ups Obi Wan 's exit in ANH.

Issues of the story aside, I really would have loved to see physical Luke in full form for a couple SW flicks

Hamill really brought it here as Luke Skywalker. Sure I would have loved to see him go HAM with a Lightsaber again in EPIC fashion, but I still really enjoyed what they did with the character overall.

But if it's been under the water for years, it probably doesn't work anymore.

It works if the story needs it to work. If astromech droids can keep being effective fighters than anything can happen.

Hamill's interviews are alawys great. This one is fun and he is also cooking with Jamie Oliver:

This was Hamill’s greatest ever performance IMO.

I guess I'll post this in both Luke threads.

All I wanted from these movies was a scene of Luke absolutely wrecking some fools with a light saber and force powers. I kept waiting for him to show up and save the day in the last movie and made my peace with knowing we'd get it in the next movie [BLACKOUT]when he walks out alone I was like o snap here it is. Then when I saw it was going to be a 1v1 I was like crap, with Snoke dead Luke will probably lose this. Then the reveal, awesome but now I have to wait again to see him wreck. Then dead. Luke dying ruins the movie for me. His final scene would have been an epic closing scene for episode 9[/BLACKOUT]

This is not Luke's trilogy. Rey, Finn, Poe, etc. are the heroes of this saga. Luke is a supporting character. He was never going to be the guy who wins the day in Episode IX. His time as the hero of the story ended with ROTJ.

He was the Obi-Wan Kenobi of this trilogy.....the old Jedi who gives out some sage advice, does something flashy with the Force, then sacrifices himself to save others.

Doesn't mean he couldn't have had a fight scene. I can't imagine there was anyone who, prior to seeing this film, were like "you know what would be great? If the most powerful Jedi ever (I think?) who we've waited years to see again, doesn't have a fight scene."

"A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense. Never for attack."

"You didn't think I'd risk losing the battle for Gotham's soul in a fist fight with you?"

Just like THE DARK KNIGHT, this movie isn't resolved by punching, but by characters willing to make tough moral choices learned thru hardship, loss, maturity, and wisdom.

And that's so much more satisfying than more laser-swords.

And to be honest...

"If you strike me down in anger, I'll always be with you. Just like your father."

...hurt Kylo more than any lightsaber blow could. Luke knew exactly which of his buttons to push.

And what I'm saying, is that these are all things that people like post seeing the film. We have long threads about people being excited to see Luke come back and kick some butt. I would be shocked if there is a single post saying they want him to come back as a pacifist or w.e

If they don't like what they got, they didn't understand a thing he did.

And further

he was looking further than that moment. It's not about slicing Kylo Ren in half. In the short term, he saves the rebellion, but also, long term, he saves the rebellion. And he does it such a way as to most strike Kylo Ren in his weakest spot: his father figures, a reminder of the light, and that we can't just kill our pasts. If Kylo Ren is not beyond redemption, it is because of what Luke left him with: not a physical wound, but an emotional one.

I have to see this movie again. I love it more and more by the hour.

Edit: dammit I'm old and I don't know how spoiler tags work.

**Fixed it for you**

We understand what we got..

a suicidal depressed hermit, regretting wanting to kill his nephew, so he milks anthropomorphic space cows, awaiting death - presumably from too much green milk

BB 8 took out more enemies than Luke lol. Actually BB 8 may have the highest KO/kill count in this movie

Luke walking out of that base like a gunslinger and facing down the might of the First Order was more badass than any saber fight. In that scene Luke was the myth and the legend. Besides, we've seen people bashing sabers together in 7 of the 8 Episode films. This was the biggst display of force power and skill we have seen in the films, and was actually something different.

You are right about one thing tho. It wasn't much of a fight. A fight implies there was a struggle between two opposing forces. Luke wasn't fighting Kylo. He was making Kylo look like a ***** in front of his army.

As I think bout it....
the Luke against Ren moment was like about half of the "action" moments in David Carradine's KUNG FU TV series. Luke is the wandering Shaolin Monk of the universe.

Or the Ronin in a samurai movie. He "wonders into town" and seriously ****s with the bad guys and moves on when he is finished.

Rian was really channeling asian cinema and anime at a number of points in this film.
