The Last Jedi Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker (VIII)

See, the problem is that even if that's true, the fans who hated the movie are never going to believe it. And we can't be 100% sure that it is true, it's not like it's something Hamill or Disney are ever going to admit. It could be true or it could be bushwa. We'll never know.

Knowing Disney, it wouldn't surprise me if they asked Mark to be more supportive of the film, since some fans were using his words to slam it. He never, ever should have said anything until long after the movie came out. I love Mark to itty-bitty bits but he made a big mistake here.

Not aware of the old saying?

"Do you think mom is going to make her signature casserole for New Years?"

"Is the Pope Catholic?"

Futurama did a take on it, that's where the image comes from.

In other words, your question? It's a lock.

And... This is why explaining a joke robs it of humor.

:)

It's frustrating to me that people are claiming that he's been asked to backtrack on his comments. If Disney was after him then he would have been asked to retract his comments months ago. I dig that he's so fun and candid and I'm sure Disney likes it too.

I feel like people who hate this movie are trying to twist everything. "Mark hated his role, so Disney had to straighten him out." "The box office is terrible" I've seen so many different variations of those complaints all over twitter/forums.

I mean, Mark's comments weren't anything new. They just blew up after release due to reaction to the movie.

Can we talk about how legit af Mark Hamill looks on Crait after he's been cleaned up?

It's by far my favorite scene of the film. The wiping off his shoulder moment was legit af.

Clean robes, trimmed beard, blue lightsaber, that classic Luke haircut.

Squealed like a baby right there in the theater.

As soon as he showed up I knew it wasn't really him. I didn't think of force projection....thought it was some kind of hologram....but he was thinner and no grey hair.

I expect we'll see him in Episode IX.

I didn't catch that on my first viewing.

Yep, he looked bad***.

And speaking about his look on Crait, in a way the film's teaser poster really represents his confrontation with Kylo on Crait.

If you look closely, he has the trimmed hair on the poster vs. Kylo on the right side, intersected by Rey's lightsaber. The background in the poster is also red, symbolizing not only the film's tone, but the red minerals that are present on Crait:

After the film, I've grown to love this poster even more!

I thought the same, which kind of threw the scene off for me. Doesn't he even apologize to Leia for having to battle Ben, which seems weird since he's not even there and able to do anything to him?'

Even if he does want to fool everyone so the legend would be spread the outcome is then that Kylo Ren apparently beat him since Luke vanishes and Kylo is still around. Sounds like the legend that's being spread should be about Kylo now, defeating the legendary Luke Skywalker.

Perhaps it was a back-handed way to apologize for failing her son? We know he's so guilty about his role in Ben's fall that he cuts himself off from the Force for 6 years and goes into hiding. Perhaps this was the closest he felt he could get to contrition? Also if he's back as a Force ghost to help Rey then he's continuing to fight against her son via proxy.

He looked younger and something was definitely off, but at first we thought at first he was already dead and that it was a Force Ghost version of him on Crait, until we saw the shot of him back on the island.

I didn't catch the footsteps in the sand until the second time.

That's why he spoke to Leia before going out to face him. He told her that he had to face Ben, but that he couldn't save him. It was the opposite of the time they spoke in ROTJ, when he told her he had to face Vader because he could save him. I think he needed her to know that before he went out there, so he could do it with her blessing.

But Kylo Ren didn't win. The Resistance escaped. Anyone who watched him confront Luke saw Kylo couldn't strike him down, and that Luke vanished. He wasn't defeated. No one saw that.

What we saw in the last scene was that the story had traveled as far as the slave children on Canto Bight, and it's about how Luke Skywalker defeated a whole army of the First Order.

Same. As soon as I saw Flashback Luke, I squealed with joy. It's what I always dreamed of Jedi Master Luke looking like. I hope and pray they keep that look for his Force Ghost in IX, except with his Flashback robes (which upon review are a white version of his ROTJ costume) instead of the Force Projection ones. The dark Force Projection Robes were necessary due to the Crait colour scheme and I like the way the black/white colour scheme recalled classic Samurai films, but Luke's Force Ghost needs to scream pure Jedi to me after his death. I really hope JJ doesn't go back to his sloppy Luke appearance from TFA. It's far less flattering on Hamill.

Omg. Everything about that scene. :wow:

Also, I noticed this last time...the three Resistance fighters who stand up behind Poe when Luke is walking out of the hangar to face Kylo Ren were Mark Hamill's kids. Which I thought made that scene even cooler.

Gee, you sound very confident.

I hope you are right...

That made me go "Wait...what?" too since we saw that saber broken in half not ten minutes earlier. The only change I would have made to Luke's Force projection would have been to give him his classic green ROTJ lightsaber.

In the view of people that don't understand the magic of the Force it should definitely look like Kylo won. They went out there and fought, and Kylo was the only one walking away. Whether Luke died (he'll likely never be seen again by any normal people) or was forced away doesn't matter to the fact of who won. Nothing they saw would indicate that Luke won.

That the story travels that far is a thing that I don't think works very well logically. A handful of resistance people on board the Falcon spreads a story that no one can verify (and it is a blatant lie to some degree) and it quickly becomes a legend? Sure, Luke's name is already legendary so that helps, but given that no one has seen him for years, and will never see him again (save for one or two people seeing his force ghost), it feels like the rumor would die out pretty quickly.

The whole thing just makes Luke's effort even less epic since they could clearly just make any crap up and people would believe it.

That was my trigger that something was up as well. After the second viewing, it was really cool the ways they set it up. For example, Luke's feet don't leave marks in the salt. And I have a feeling that C-3PO, being a droid, knew what was up, which was why Luke gave him that wink.

That little "Master Luke.." from 3PO and the wink made me choke up. Both viewings. Luke's gun slinger/samurai moment gave me everything that I wanted.

That's...freakin' awesome. :mnm:

I loved all of Luke's outfits. Crait's outfit was just pure beauty.

Mostly, though, I loved his brown/black hooded outfit in most of the scenes on Ahch-To. He just looked straight awesome with it. Probably my most favorite look of Luke :D

Flashback Luke with the white outfit brought me so many nods to ROTJ. I had goosebumps in the cinema.

Also, I don't really mind his white robes on Ahch-To. However, I think he looked better with them in the end of TFA than during Yoda's scene in TLJ. Maybe it's due to how JJ directed it - turning around, removing his hood, the hair being waved from the wind. It just looked majestic in TFA, IMO.

I think it still works. Why would people think Kylo came out on top? Kylo clearly makes a hit on Luke, and Luke is unaffected. Then Kylo points his saber through him, and Luke is still unaffected. It’s not until Kylo has been made to look like a fool (and the resistance has escaped) that Luke disappears.

Kylo comes out with egg on his face in this scenario no matter how you spin it. Hence the legend. Luke appears all powerful.
