Marvel April 2008 Solicitations

When the past is this clearly defined, anyone can predict the future.

I don't remember that from Back to the Future.

Missed the IGN previews. Man, I am NOT looking forward to SECRET INVASION. Bendis + Event = Plodding pacing and shameless retcons that always, always fail to excite or bring about anything positive to any character, ever. He's whiffed on two events thus far in terms of quality. I am not expecting a home run from a third. Hell, I'd take a mediocre bunt at this point.

I think Bendis can pull it off, it's the type of story he's usually good at. For me, the real concern about Secret Invasion is Yu's art--his run on New Avengers was flat out terrible.

How is this "the type of story he's usually good at"?

I'm assuming that SI is more of a character-driven mystery type story than a balls-out war like WWH, the former of which is (I think) Bendis' strength.

Bendis doing character driven stories with Marvel's superheroes always has a 50/50 shot of sucking. He and Millar are the kings of mischaracterization.

No, but bendis' track record for these things is pretty obvious. He'll drag on forever then make a few drastic changes that will shock but only because they're so incredibly stupid and unnecessary, he'll write all the characters out of character and in the end, after the inevitable deus ex machina finish, everyone will be left very confused.

exactely because of all these poor deluded lost souls that for some reason think that this time things will be different.

And all the poor, deluded lost souls who actually dig this stuff and look forward to it.

I don't believe they actually exist, they're just an urban legend like the guy with the hook hand or chicks that are smart and pretty.

Yeah, I've seen them with my own two eyes. They were canoodling with their cousins in that mythic place we call The Bible Belt.

I want to buy it. :(

The art is pretty but come on another spider-man wolverine team up? The concept has become almost insulting now. Hey I wonder if there's gonna be a misunderstanding and they fight (which will prove inconclusive) before realizing what's going on and teaming up to fight some greater evil? That would be cool.

The Brandon Peterson cover for MCP #8 looks good. Regardless of whether or not it's the Nextwave version of the character, it's being drawn by Nico Henrichon, meaning it's worth a look.

The types of stories he is good at are 1-2 part character stories and urban noir. This has neither. This will be some multi-part event that is, what, 8-9 issues long!? I've read HOM and ULTIMATE CLONE SAGA and neither were worthy of being longer than 5 parts, much less 8 or even 9.

No, SI has something else Bendis loves; the chance to retcon **** pointlessly, ruin characters because he wants to ruin them in his specific way, and having a lot of characters who should know better in-fighting and self-destructing so he can teach us that, once again, superheroes are useless.

I agree with you on Yu; I see some of his 90's art in some of the Handbooks and only shake my head and go, "what the **** happened!?" Granted, with shops overordering NA regardless, I wouldn't kill myself to pencil that thing either.

It isn't.

Agreed. Yeah, look at Wanda. Or Clint. How about how worthless Spider-Man has been as a New Avenger after all the hoopla? The same Electro that took on the Hulk blubbering like a baby in front of Luke Cage. I could go on and on and on.

Sadly, yes.

And Marvel will make a mint.

Uh-huh.

The irony is I am not deluded. I don't even expect mediocrity from this. But, I'm a completist. And it'll be good *****ing fuel.

Anyone else notice that X-Men: First Class has not been canceled or ended with #8? There's a solicit for #11. Pags' cover is kickass.
