Marvel Films MCU X-Men - Part 4

I hope a MCU Charles Xavier will, without being too much like the Patrick Stewart version, be very, very far away from the James McAvoy version. The McAvoy version/prequel films went way too far into making the protagonist super-flawed, jerky, barely inspiring at all, outright really unlikeable.

He doesn't even age as Michael Fassbender.
LOL
Pretty much in season 1 and 2 the students attend public school and hide their abilities from the public, we have evidence in the show that basically tells us that mutants are a new phenomenon and have not been discovered publically (although shield does know about them). Essentially magneto wishes to expose the mutants through force and violence, where as Xavier knows that world isnt quite ready to handle the idea of mutants and wants to protect them until the time is right. By the end of season 2 magneto succeeds in exposing the mutants to the world and the aftermath is perfect. It shows paranoia on the small scale of streets. The media plays up the idea that they're not human, and the government is unclear what to make of it.

I think i remember is that when spike was on the street? i vaguely remember him goin bonkers

what a coincidence-- same thing has happened to Cyclops and Professors characterization in the comics.

I've been wanting the MCU version of Charles to veer more into that territory. Charles is, in many ways, an overprotective, slightly egotistical control freak in the comics. He means well but he always thinks he knows best, better than the team itself. We've seen this demonstrated many times over the years when he's clashed with Cyclops and Storm over how to lead the X-Men. Even his iconic phrase "To me, my X-Men" is kinda controlling in itself. I want to see that side explored, a different side of him.

I think the MCU version needs to get away from the all-knowing, sage-like figure of Stewart to differentiate. Charles should be an actual character with flaws and vulnerability as a human being. I kinda like what they're doing with the character in Dark Phoenix to be honest.

At least it should be avoided that Charles seems way overly-wealthy/privileged, like he thinks his wealth and resources and connections entitle him to leadership (as in FC) or he is shocked and totally dispirited/disillusioned on the team facing challenges or even social trauma (as in DoFP). It felt like you were supposed to identify a lot more with Magneto (and Mystique) or otherwise look down on Charles.

Maybe not too sage-like but he should be the leader/mentor a lot more from actually being inspiring and charismatic than just from having resources or being very manipulative.

Charles has always felt a sense of entitlement to the X-Men. He feels that because he created the team and he brought these kids under his wing, they should always follow his commands and never diverge from the path he forges for them. There's a great moment in Issue #129 where Scott and Charles have an argument over him still treating the X-Men like children and then in turn, blaming Scott for what he believes is failing leadership

We need to see more of that. Give Charles an actual journey of self-reflection instead of having him be the all-knowing mentor cliche who only exists to be the symbol of nobility and wisdom like in the Singer films. Make that his flaw: make that the POINT of his arc, that his all-seeing eye is too overbearing. That he pushes the X-Men too far and this in turn causes a source of contention between Scott and Charles because as the leader, he has the biggest burden to bear. Let Charles learn to trust in his students instead of being a control freak on and off the battlefield. "You taught me well, professor."

I want to see a Charles whose methods are sometimes questionable but there's always a good cause or reason for it. He should be one step ahead of his enemy like he was in the 90s run, Secret Wars and Ultimate.

In the Fox films you'd never see something like that panel, Raven has usurped Cyclops' role in the mythos. Very sad.

On another note, I kinda want James Wan to direct MCU X-Men. He went all out with Aquaman, and we need someone to go all out with X-Men. At the very least, I know his Jean Grey would look great based on Mera. Not to mention colorful, comic-booky costumes, world-building, embracing the silliness/campiness, well-shot, open, exciting action sequences.

Someone else suggested James Wan a while ago and my question is still the same: how is he with female characters? Because I'm hearing very mixed things about Mera.

Mera was fantastic, Atlanna was even better. No complaints.

Yeah, many people are saying that both Mera and Atlanna are very badass. But is there any depth to them or are they just Strong Female Characters™ that pretty much everyone will forget in a few weeks like Domino.

The most emotional moments from the film involve Nicole Kidman’s character. She also had one of the best fight scenes in the film. I didn’t see any issue with his portrayal of female characters. I’d recommend seeing the film yourself though.

Eh I wish I could, but the movie isn't out where I live yet. In any case, after Aquaman's success I doubt Warner Bros are going to let Disney snatch Wan from them.

Mera had agency in the film. Her own perspective.

Wan would be an odd choice for X-Men, just based on his filmography. I don't see how Aquaman translates to a good X-Men film

comicbooky costumes dont make add or take away from a film's quality
I never said they make a good movie. They certainly help the movie look visually appealing, though.

The horrible costumes of X-Men: Apocalypse certainly helped making it look worse.

Not really an odd choice, he did an ensemble movie (F&F7) and a comic book movie (AM), both were big undertakings, blockbusters.

You don't have to like him for it but I fail to see how he wouldn't fit the profile.

What makes anyone sure James Wan would be available at all?

It will be interesting to see what projects he signs up for next.

Wan is definitely out of the picture. WB also swept up Ava DuVernay, so she's off the table. Which leaves, in my opinion, Travis Knight as the best relistic pick, in my opinion.

Travis Knight already said he wants to go back to animation after Bumblebee. Not that wouldn't go back on that or take an offer or what have you. He might not be realistic either. Guardians of the Galaxy fans were already interested in him for Vol. 3.

Travis Knight could be a really good choice. Bumblebee was an excellent movie

Amber heard as mera is my 3rd favorite cbm female hero after michelles catwoman and gals wonder woman.
She was incredibly captivating and while amber deserves the praise, wan, i think, is the one who managed to get the best out of her.
The thought of him handling storm, jean, emma... I would die from excitement.
