Marvel Films MCU X-Men - Part 4

Wan would be an odd choice for X-Men, just based on his filmography. I don't see how Aquaman translates to a good X-Men film

Fans always latch onto the latest director or actor to hit it big and decide that they'd be best for every franchise. It goes in cycles. After Chronicle came out, a lot of people clamored to have Josh Trank direct superhero films. After Fant4stic, not so much. ;)

Yeah, I remember that. I think Chronicle was an excellent film but I was absolutely perplexed when they announced he was going to be doing a "grounded, darker" take on the property. Words I'd never associate with the F4.

Wan's handling of Mera is encouraging at least but I'd have him do Inhumans or Midnight sons or Blade. Maybe even Nova or Starjammers. Bumblebee or Kubo has the sort of tone and style I think would be a good fit for X-Men.

Then again, I haven't seen Aquaman yet. I saw Spiderverse and Bumblebee with my niece and nephew. Probably won't be able to ser Aquaman until after Christmas. Things are very busy

Someone else suggested James Wan a while ago and my question is still the same: how is he with female characters? Because I'm hearing very mixed things about Mera.
Mera was given a huge role, pretty much on par with Aquaman. That's a good sign surely.

For those who celebrate

Mera was fantastic, Atlanna was even better. No complaints.
Mera had agency in the film. Her own perspective.
Amber heard as mera is my 3rd favorite cbm female hero after michelles catwoman and gals wonder woman.
She was incredibly captivating and while amber deserves the praise, wan, i think, is the one who managed to get the best out of her.
The thought of him handling storm, jean, emma... I would die from excitement.

Hmmm, something tells me that many people here liked Mera. Am I wrong? :hehe:

Yup pretty much this.

Seems to be pretty different from the critics' reaction to her
and I've seen Heard act before, so I might have to trust the critics on this one... lol

While heards acting is pretty average her character is good imo

I want MCU Magneto to really cross lines and commit more reprehensible acts. Fox Magneto usually pulls back before doing anything too nasty, or gets stopped in time before he can finish, or there's some extenuating circumstance to "justify" what he's doing like brainwashing or he got wronged first. I want full on "Fatal Attractions" style Magneto being all punitive and savage on everyone.

Given the MCU's penchant for taking less than stellar Comics storylines and making them amazing, I could actually see a lot of potential for an MCU "Ultimatum" story

Ten years down the line, after phases 4 5 and 6, after 3 X-Men movies
Maybe Polaris is killed in an anti-mutant attack, Magneto goes off the rails and creates Asteroid M, finds Strombreaker, long thought lost after the Infinity War, and launches a massive attack on the globe, requiring the Avengers (including some retired ones), FF, and X-Men to all work together and stop him, Thor can even go to Valhalla to bring Cap back after a decade of rest...

with more well-established characters, and far better characterization than Loeb managed (and also no cannibalism!) it could be a great event story. The cosmic side can have Annihilation, the earth bound heroes get Ultimatum....

I do want to see Asteroid M in the MCU.

Would it be cool if Mastermind was initially in Magneto's group of followers?

Asteroid M is mandatory, but I’d rather see a world-wary Magneto create it either for solitude or as a utopia, only for him to get manipulated into an international conflict by Fabian Cortez.

A streamlined Inferno would make an excellent MCU crossover.

Honestly, I'm way, way more interested in crossovers involving mutant groups and heroes only, than crossover involving other heroes like Avengers, FF or Guardians. For huge stories like IW, it's great. But it should take a really long time to happen.

I wouldn't mind Phase 4, 5 and 6 mirroring 1, 2 and 3. So we get an Avengers size event at the end of each of these phases and an IW/EG sized event at the end of Phase 6 with everyone thrown together. The end of Phase 4 might be too early for an X-Men event but maybe at the end of Phase 5 we get both a MCU non-mutant event and a mutant event, to keep the teams separate and justify why they aren't all crossing over to deal with the same issue. Might be a bit much but it's an idea at least. And then going forward you can have a mutant event at the end of every phase after that. All this is assuming the mutants are going to be long term ever-presents int eh MCU. Also for the non-mutant events you can still have certain characters like Beast appearing if it's feasible to include him.

The possibilities are crazy now. I don't think we ever got onto characters like Fabian Cortez and Asteroid M when discussing X-films during the original trilogy. This stuff would have seemed way too out-there back then. Good times.

And I would love to see a world-weary Magneto, who is willing to let things lie but the world just doesn't let him be.

I don't think it's realistic to expect Marvel to have this huge X-Men movie events with no involvement from any other group besides mutants. Doctor Strange, T'Challa and Spider-Man weren't Avengers but they all got involved with the Thanos conflict because he's a threat to the entire planet. An Apocalypse or Proteus or Onslaught or Phoenix-Force Jean (*which whenever Marvek gets around to adapting Dark Phoenix will likely include other non-mutant heroes for differntation) would have to have everybody involved. A world-ending event concerns more than just mutants. Otherwise, what's the point of them being in the MCU in the first place?

Well folks this is looking closer and closer and I couldn't be happier.

Yes, that article mentioned a greenlight to start planning etc within 6 months. I hope that's accurate.

I knew things would probably come together soon in terms of fox soon to be MCU properties, but I didn’t think it would happen that fast.

Excited!

Wait what is happening??? I’ve been trying to catch up with everything.

Nothing really. People are just spinning the wheels until we hear some news whenever.

I thought Mera was a pretty good character, but I thought there were one or two moments, like when they had her breathing all heavily or on the boat when her whole chest was on display - you know, I liked her, but there were moments like that, that were a bit cringey.
