To complicate matters further, Ethan is forced to embark on this mission with a team of fellow IMF fugitives whose personal motives he does not fully know. Tom Cruise returns in the starring role as Ethan Hunt and is joined by an international cast that includes Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Michael Nyqvist, Vladimir Mashkov, Josh Holloway, Anil Kapoor and Lea Seydoux.

I'll be getting this for sure.

^ Weird commentary, but OK.

Still haven't watched it. Awaiting for the DVD.

As I recall MI:3 didn't really do very well and there was a big public dispute with Tom Cruise and Paramount where he was "fired" saying Cruise's behavior ruined the movie's box office results.

Well it's confirmed. I can understand his reasoning. Still a bummer though.

‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ Blu-Ray Doesn’t Include Expanded IMAX Ratio Footage

You can read Brad Bird’s twitter conversation about the issue with a fan at this link.

“The effect is NOT like seeing it in an IMAX theater, which forces you to sit forward, So I chose 2.40:1,” Bird explained. “I’m not opposed to a part IMAX Blu ray, it’s just not the way I chose to have it seen @ home.”

Dang, that's a shame. Totally blown away by the IMAX footage both times I saw it.

Still gonna buy it week it comes out. Easily one of my top 2011 flicks.

I just watched this today.

As a LOST fan, my reaction to the opening was "Oh cool, I forgot Josh Holloway was in this mov - oh". lol.

I loved Ving Rhames turning up at the end.

It was decent. Not a very memorable villain though. I didn't totally get his motivation. Was his ultimate goal post-apocalyptic world domination, to take control of and nurture the remnants of human civilization however he saw fit, or was his whole plan to just blow everybody up and let mother nature take care of the future?

Why not?

TDK blu is so sick when it fills up my whole 52" screen during the IMAX scenes...

He was supposed to be reminiscent of the Cold War-type villain from the original series, whose main purpose was to serve as a foil to the main characters and move the plot forward.

That was kind of the point, though. He had no conscience or feelings about what he had to do. He had no grand master plan. He just tried to carry out his mission: launch the Soviet missile, incite nuclear war. Simple as that. Because you don't know who he is or what his exact motivations are for doing what he does, due to no character development and minimal screen time, it almost makes him even more menacing than a villain with specific goals in mind.

He kind of reminds of the T-800 in the first Terminator film. It's mission in that film was simple and direct: kill Sarah Connor, and stop the human resistance. It had no remorse for what it had to do. It just did it. That's pretty scary.

I have no doubt that was intentional on the director's and writer's part. Brad Bird isn't a dummy, and he knows his audience isn't a bunch of dummies, either. :woot:

I can see the pro's and cons

Con- Turns the whole screen into "full screen" which I hate. I always find the "widescreen edition" when I buy a dvd.

Con- Switching ratio's back and forth. One minute you're watching a 2:40 ratio scene

And then the IMAX scene kicks in( Escorting Harvey Dent in armored truck)

Pro- Looks amazing! The fire from the firetruck the Joker set on fire looks amazing!

The heist prologue looks great too.

Even so, I felt like the villain should had more screentime. Otherwise he was just a plot device.

You're probably right, but I don't think The Avengers will need a lot of help finding an audience. ;)

It's not like a typical American family with kids is going to be like:

"Hey, Little Jimmy, do you want to go see a movie? Iron Man's in it, so is the Hulk, Thor and Captain America!"

"Nah."

"It also stars the gritty critically-acclaimed Oscar-nominated actor Jeremy Renner!"

"Really?!? Start the freakin' car, *****!!!"

Where did I say anything about oscar nominee????????

And I'm not talking about kids, but the ladies, who are the hardest to get into the theater. I'm not watching the Avengers for the plot or the superhero aspect, I'm watching it for the MEN! And like it or not, but Jeremy Renner is a very hot man!

I'm gonna back this up by saying that the only reason I saw GP in IMAX the night before the opening was because of Jeremy Renner and how attracted I am to him. I was just lucky enough to really enjoy the movie in general as well.

The villain was better, but I think MI4 was better as an overall movie.

Really? I found Seymour Hoffman to be good early on, but after his dramatic escape his character began to get less and less interesting with each scene.

I think that's true, but that still makes him a better villain than the one in this film. Despite that, though, this movie as a whole was much better than M:I3, imo.

Personally I thought MI3 and MI4 were both collectively better than MI2.

Agree with that as well. I rank them:

MI
MI Ghost Protocol (very close to top spot)
MI3
MI2

I rank them Ghost Protocol, 3, M:I, 2.

No word on a blu ray set of all four movies yet? I want them on blu but I'm waiting to for a better transfer...

^I wouldn't mind. I actually have Mission Impossible on VHS, and haven't gotten around to upgrading it. If they do have a bargain pack, I'll gladly pick it up. But, either way, I'm still getting MI4.

I wish the Blu-ray cover had the 'group shot' instead of Cruise on the side of the building.
