The villains who will go up against Batman in 2008's The Dark Knight were in attendance: Heath Ledger (The Joker) and the newly cast Aaron Eckhart (Two Face). "I'm pretty stoked," said Eckhart, who recalled "stupidly" turning down the lead role in Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan's breakout hit, 2000's Memento. "I've wanted to work with Christopher ever since, and this is a really great character. You're going to see a good part of my face and then a good part of (the chemically disfigured) Two Face. I'll be looking at other personalities to get an idea of how to play this complicated guy."

Eckhart, a Spirit Award actor nominee for Thank You For Smoking, begins shooting Dark Knight in London in late April. Ledger said, "having Aaron rounds out our cast. After having read the script, I realize why Christopher cast him in this role."

Thanks to mad-sci for point this out. :)

Thanks Mirinda! Late April...oh the agony.

This is sweet. Good spot, both of ye. Miranda, where do you stand on the Harvey debate? Inner demons or crushed by Gotham?

I wouldn't mind a sort of mix of both - although I'd lean more towards 'crushed by Gotham.' That lends itself more to tragedy and the what-if factor - i.e. if things had been different, would Bats/Bruce have gone the same way as Two-Face ultimately does?

Miranda..you are a female Retro.

thanks..i can't wait to see what he does with this role...and the script is complete..

i smell a script review in the future..soon i hope.

That would be awesome! Come on Latino Review/IGN/Whichever, we're counting on ya!

Yes, I got a *leetle* annoyed when I saw that.

so are we all in agreement that we're gonna see the two-face side in TDK?

Imagine if they got together! The children would be all-seeing, all knowing! They could rule these boards!

Hmm, notice how it says ECKHART starts filming in late April? Maybe the rest of the cast start filming a few weeks before?

Three things in the interview got me:-

(1) Eckhart turned down the role for Memento. Truthfully, Pearce OWNED that role. But if Nolan remembers Eckhart from back then, that tells you a little about his casting.

(2) Ledger says Eckhart rounds out the cast. That tells me the focus of the film's Batman, Gordon, Dent and Joker.... Perfect.

(3) Ledger says after reading the script, he understands why Christopher [Nolan] picked Eckhart. Based on his film performances so far, expect a heroic, arrogant and charming Dent, before the switch.

Nice find Miranda, damn I wanna read the script.

Nice find, and intriguing to say the least... So Aaron turned down the leading role in Memento... Nothing like the sweet taste of a second chance, huh, man?

What shocked me was that Aaron was who Nolan originally picked - I honestly never, ever knew that! But yes, that was a truly brilliant performance by Pearce.

Good catch about the filming bit - it makes sense that Bale, for instance would start filming before a lot of the cast as he'll be in most of the scenes.

Look at the main things Eckhart's been in, for Ledger to consider him [Eckhart] to be suitable for Dent, having read the script.

Off the top of my head, I see the 4 performances that would work as Dent:-

(1) The Company of Men - Eckhart is charming, well educated, good looking - and a complete and utter scumbag.

(2) Thank You For Smoking - In 1 scene, Eckhart's tobacco lobbyist confronts a patient dying of cancer from smoking on a talk show, and CHARMS his way to getting the guy on his side.

(3) The Core - BAD film, but Eckhart plays the smart, heroic scientist, who risks all to save the world (I can't believe I just wrote that....)

(4) Paycheck - ANOTHER bad film (really bad), but again, Eckhart oozes charm and manners, whilst barely hiding a sinister motive.

Based on all this, you can expect Dent in TDK to be VERY charming, well educated and spoken, but with a definite hint of arrogance (Eckhart's not well known for playing very humble characters).

Interesting comment on Two-Face. I wonder if he's referring to TDK, or just the "trilogy" as a whole. I think it might be too soon to see Two-Face.

I'm not trying to be mean here, but I have to disagree. I kind of think it's an insult to Eckhart to say that "because of these roles, his role as Dent will be just like it". I think that Eckhart is evolving as an actor, and he gets more talented the more I see him, so for everyone (not just you) to say that Eckhart is going to bring "that charm from every movie" into this one is like saying that The Joker will act like a gay cowboy.

In other words, Eckart knows that this is a HUGE career move on his part, and so he has to evolve even MORE as an actor, because this is a role that he's never done before (not even close).

Basically, Eckhart is thinking about the future.

LoL... nice way to end that post.

I TOTALLY AGREE. I don't believe we should use an actor's past performances to judge what the next one will be like. It's difficult to do that, however, since that is all we have to base ourselves on. I believe that if an actor is truly a good actor (can completely become immersed in a role to the point that their execution of such role is perfect) then he will do an excellent performance. Also, remember - the actors are only going off of what the script/screen play says... they MAY have suggestions here and there, but the bottom line is that they're working with what they're given. I know most people know this, but it's a good thing to keep in mind when a character has a corny line in a movie or doesn't execute certain actions that one just knows they would have done etc...

In Eckhart's case, I believe he is an excellent actor, and he has the ability to dominate the role. Ledger?... to be honest, I haven't seen him in any role (I literally have not seen an entire movie with Ledger in it ... only parts of movies, and that was AFTER I found out he would be playing the Joker in TDK - just one thing, the Brothers Grimm did not look good at all, the little bit I saw of it let me know it wasn't worth finishing, but then again, that was not Ledger or Damon's fault , and I think Matt Damon is an excellent actor.)

Hehe, pun intended, I'm sure. Thanks Miranda! It's great to hear these quotes from both Eckhart and Ledger. I'm excited to see Eckhart as Dent but I would much rather keep Two Face for the third film.

so he will be scarred in TDK? I was hoping they'd keep that for #3, but it would be a great ending.

It said Eckhart was filming in late april, not the actaul film.

Who cares if it's April or March? The truth is it's just right around the corner.
