Movies considered "classics" that aren't that great

^ I agree. I should warn you, agreeing with me is not popular at the moment. You might want to think twice before you speak. Hero is after my blood for saying that I disliked that movie, and some guy in another thread is fairly miffed too. Don't say I didn't warn you.

GHOST WORLD ISN'T A FRIGGIN CLASSIC!

ghost world isint watchable. I was using it as an example. i said that someone was arguing with me like the time I said I hated ghost world. relax. i understand what a classic is. Casablanca is a classic.

Once Upon A Time in The West has three or four brilliant scenes but I don't like the actors and it was just too long. It didn't keep my interest.
This is, IMO, the greatest Western ever made, along with The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I can understand what you're saying however, it is a slow movie, mainly because that's how the West was, and it's also because it builds up the tension throughout, and also is to show you just how much time the main character has to get revenge. I mean, the entire movie is about revenge, so to show how much this has consumed it, it's kept at a slow pace.

And whoever Star Trek, I agree completely. Just can't get into, and frankly can't see why anybody else can. Just my opinion though.

^ don't rule out movies like unforgiven. that was a great one too. Kind of a Josey Whales gets old.

It's a wonderful life.

I can see why people like it, but it isn't really that good. I personally hate it. It's a cheap piece of sentimental garbage.

and to be fair, defining something as a classic doesn't neccesarily mean it has to be the greatest thing ever. It just means that it had a prfound effect on the culture (pop culture) and is something a lot of people should see.

and 2001 is a great movie, though it is slow.

2001 is more than slow. its great if you have the attention span for it. but if you like to fidget gawd its a long haul

Times change.

The thing about classics or simply vintage film is that very few are timeless. Many films are a product of their place in history and should be appreciated from that stand point. So definitely a good knowledge of the history during a film's time can be beneficial and years from now when we're all dead, most of the stuff we think is great will be called crap by our children's children.

I agree with 2001 ... I dunno what stopped me from turning it off. I actually did turn off Dr Strangelove... I made it about 5 minutes before I just hopped on the internet and just turned the tv off a half hour later. I don't want to hear anything about having an "MTV generation" attention span, cause I spend most of my time reading and enjoy really deep movies.

2001 is definatly more of a scientific movie. it really doesnt have a heart to it. i did find it increbibally intruiging though a little boring at times.

I think sometimes it's not the movie itself that makes it a classic, but it's contribution to cinema that adds to its classic status. 2001 dips into quantum physics theories and stuff like that since it's such a complicated film, but on top of that it was the first of its kind that would influence later films.

It's the same with Superman. That movie did not age well at all, but prettymuch every comic film ever rips it off, copies it etc...

Maybe how much a film is ripped off makes it a classic.

2001 was a revolutionary piece of cinema. I understand some people find it slow etc, but it's like one giant masterpiece of art. Film is and should be considered an artform, people like Kubrik really put this point across.

Spellbound and Notorious are overrated. They are a lot like Hitchcock experimenting, trying to keep up with Robert Sidomak who was a much better filmaker at the time. Spellbound does have a lot of elements which he draws on for North by northwest, especially the dream sequence. They're not too great to be honest, as is the man who knew too much. Hitchcock was still a feldgling of cinema and had yet to found his proverbial feet.

the thing about easy rider is that you had to be there.
My aunt thinks its the greatest film ever made, because she was alive during the hippy and commune days. Easy Rider is a political movie more than anything. When you try to watch it now it makes no sense and might seem really dumb. But for the beat generation it was huge.

Just glad I wasn't there. Though I have more of a liberal bias, I hate hairy, dirty, smelly hippies.

and they hate stuffy, greedy, starched republicans.
personaly I hate politics. Its all lies. burn it all down.

Pulp Fiction is overratted and so is Goodfellas...both suck and are totally unwatchable like Star Wars. I hate this thread.

Pulp fiction is very overrated. Bruce Willis' section is exceptionally dull and poorly executed, as is the Uma Thurman story. Quentin Tarrantino seems to come across as a director who appeals to twelve year old boys who think violence is cool. Whilst he attempts to add in subtleties of post-modernist cinema, he lacks the forethought and correct visage of the application, making it more of a meaningless gimick.

Dune is one for me. I like sci-fi but I just can't get into that movie.

Dazed and Confused is another. Very good flick but classic?
