New Mutants New Mutants News and Discussion - Part 2

wow, Fox really believes in the property, if they gave it such a big budget....
:whatever:

Hey slug do you know if the delay in Brazil approving this deal buys Fox some time to get some potential projects off the ground? should we be worried? That this might buy them some time?

What was originally discussed would have required around three times as much... But it would've been worth it.

A mid-budget film isn't a bad idea. Look to movies by Blumhouse. It's possible for a movie to be a success without cracking a half billion unlike some movies. New Mutants is a risk given the lack of known characters to the general audience.

and that is exactly the problem of Fox, they dont see all the potential "because they arent popular mutants, and Logan and Magneto arent in the movie"

Time for this franchise to end under this limited studio.

What's wrong with a mid-level budget for a movie? Not every movie has to risk bankruptcy for a studio if it bombs.

I know, but 40m is like cheapest cbm movie from this new age, and New mutants deserve much better than a cheap budget.
of course it had to be Fox the studio to with a cheap budget for these characters. Its pretty obvious the other studios have at least more confidence in their characters, even if they arent a-list.

I‘m super saddened by the state of this movie. I thought making a horror movie set in the X-Men universe was such a smart idea. Especially after the success of It and the Conjuring.

I re-read the first run of New Mutants and it is really such a dark and twisted setting during the demon bear saga or magik’s History in limbo. i hope we will see the movie soon on a streaming Site at least.

a cameo by a cooler, more mature (but still child) X-23 could save it at the end

as much as I liked X23 and Dafne, I was against the idea of forcing her in this movie. That sounds like typical Fox b**** and the New Mutants deserve their own movie without anyone with claws stealing their spotlight too

While I personally never believed that a horror film was the best format to introduce these characters to the people, (We thought that a lighter tone would be the best introduction, with darker elements better to explore in sequels.) We also knew it wouldn't be impossible if done right.

And the script read well, but by the time shooting was completed, Boone had made so many changes that the product was barely recognizable. I mean, we went from the Demon Bear being a huge plot point, to it being in just a couple forgettable scenes. It was crazy.

Perhaps this movie's biggest problem was that Boone sold Fox on the idea of making a horror film with Superheroes in it, (which again, many of us were strongly against) and then delivered a final product that was all over the place & wasn't even scary. It was such a dull, boring, heartless mess.

I've since seen much of Boone's other work and I've thought most of it was generally okay at the very least. Which only serves to further confuse me as to how things got so bad with New Mutants both on camera and bts. I don't know what was going on with Boone or what he was under the influence of while shooting New Mutants, but it's hard for me to believe that this was the same Boone who had directed those other films.

Dafne would've brought some heart to this movie, which it was severley lacking. But, I agree that bringing in new characters should have never been needed to begin with.

Would you mind giving us a detailed plot summary? I really don’t understand how this movie could get so bad if there was no studio interference to **** up Boone‘s vision.

I love the pitch of these traumatized mutant teenagers being drawn into Dani’s nightmare visions copying with their mutant powers. I remember from the comicbooks when Dani met Karma for the first time and she had to reexperience her rape infront of everybody. That’s some tragic horror, right there. So I totally understand why Boone went for the horror angle. There is just this general creepiness in the books in these traumatized teenagers coming to Xavier’s who actually was a brood queen at this time looking for teenagers who could be host bodies. Again, creepy horror ****. Same goes to Magik‘s entire history which probably is the darkest thing the X-books have ever done.

There would have been interesting ways to speak about trauma through these superheroes quite similar to Jessica Jones.

If they've only spent £45 million on it, then it should either be
a) released as it is, on a streaming service on straight to DVD
b) reshot with more money thrown at it to make it work for the cinema -I'd prefer Demon Bear to be a big part of the story than some throwaway idea

Mmmmmh. John Campea about the New Mutants rumors.

Means he would have to finish up post production on New Mutants before then right?

Yeah, I just don’t know when he would. Anya Taylor-Joy is filming her new movie “Emma” in March and Charlie Heaton is filming his new BBC series “The Elephant Man” in March. Sounds like no reshoots.

Maybe Fox scrapped the reshoots and are just going with the original cut?

it's pretty much nothing. just "we're still working on pr" stand.
anyway, recent news said the merger got delayed and will be don in like june.

One thing that you’ve been intimately involved with is The New Mutants, and they’re getting a movie from Fox.

“Yeah, I think they’re doing some reshoots right now.”

How much do you know about what their take is? Is it closer to your work?

“Yeah, it’s very much related to what Chris [Claremont] and I did. It starts from there and then it just runs with it.”

Were you involved at all, creatively?

“Well, I think if you look at the film as it currently stands, again, they’re doing some research to make it even more frightening, but what you’ll see is that I’m all over it and Chris is all over it. Even though they didn’t call me up and say “Hey can you do this for the film?” it’s in essence what we did in the comic, translated into the film.”
Final question: I wanted to ask about the whole Disney-Fox merger, with the Marvel characters coming home in a way. What do you think about the idea that the X-Men and the Avengers can now live on the same screen together?

“I think it’s great, I mean I’m not an executive with ties to any one of the particular companies, but I think there’s gonna be some shake-ups, and I think it’s actually really good. I mean for the Marvel Universe, back under the same banner, it’s really good. I know with the shake-up recently at DC, that’s a whole other can of worms, which I can’t really get into. But as far as Marvel and Fox, I think it’s actually gonna turn out to be something more positive.”
