A Viking-themed
Assassin’s Creed is looking more and more likely, as Kotaku’s Jason Schreier has now said the rumoured setting for Ubisoft’s 2020 game has been independently confirmed to him by two sources.

For those that aren’t aware, Schreier is an incredibly well-connected reporter with an enviable supply of trusted sources. If he comes out and says he believes a certain game is in development, it tends to be the case.

An Assassin’s Creed game set in the era of Vikings has been rumoured for some time now, but things really picked up steam when a number of posters were found hidden in The Division 2.

These posters depict a Norse Viking figure clutching a spear or staff in one hand and what looks like e a Piece of Eden in the other. The word Valhalla sits at the top of the poster, which as I’m sure you know is where all good warriors go to die.

Assassin’s Creed fans will of course know that Pieces of Eden are important artifacts in the popular Ubisoft franchise, making it pretty hard to disregard the posters as mere coincidence.

As Kotaku reported soon after these posters emerged, the next Assassin’s Creed is code-named Kingdom, and will indeed star Vikings. There are no further details on the game, other than the fact it’s coming in 2020 (Ubisoft previously confirmed the franchise would be skipping a 2019 release, but declined to comment on these rumours).

Previous rumours suggested the next Assassin’s Creed could either be set in Ancient Rome or feudal Japan. While a Roman setting would have made more sense after the previous two games in the series, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t stupidly excited by the prospect of playing as a Viking assassin and diving into all the rich lore that comes with such a setting.

What Are Your Thoughts?
Does A Viking Assassin's Creed Excite You?

YAAAAAASSSSSSS...give me the Vikings right now. :D

I would love it if thats true, Odyssey has all blueprints for this Era with the two playable characters, the sailing, the islands, mythical creatures etc.
That would be so sweet if true.

YESSSS. I was rather disappointed when I mentioned this to a friend earlier who's a big AC nut as well and he seemed rather underwhelmed.

His take "Scandinavia isn't a great location for a AC game" to which I looked at him bemused and said I agree but you surely wouldn't make a Viking AC game just stuck in just Scandinavia they were called Viking's for a reason after all.

Personally don't know how big you could make it or how much you could do but I would love a map that features the likes of York & Northumbria from England, Normandy & Paris for France and Sicily & North Africa for the Mediterranean.

Just off the top of my head Chalemagne would make for an excellent antagonist and leader of the Templar's as he was uniting Europe and you could have that all being part of his plan for domination.

I dont want them to go back to Italy, so this is good news if true.

They've already featured it in 2 and Brotherhood. Yes the map isn't as big as Origins but they've already featured it, and pretty much got the look of ancient Rome and the other Italian locationa, so they'd just be recycling it if they went back to Italy. And the thing about most Ac games, is the location is a big thing to separate one game to the next one. Another game set in italy might just look like AC Italy 3 and it wouldn't be very refreshing.

Oh and just in case anybody does by accident can you please not discuss AC Odyssey as im still working my way through it lol thanks.

That's so far forward that we were in the Renaissance I love that we got Ceaser in Origins think you could just continue it on right from there and make our target in a Roman set game his son Augustus but hey that's a conversation for a later day and for a later game lol.

What locations would you want to see most in a Viking AC game?

I'm open to the idea. But damn I really wanted a fully Roman era game.

if this is true, then I want a Raven companion instead of an eagle, given the importance of ravens in Viking culture and Norse mythology.

Norway.

I wouldn't be too opposed to an ancient Rome game, Origins definitely set the stage for an Aya led game if they ever want to go that route, but it doesn't really negate for me that we've had two games in Italy already, one of which was almost entirely set in Rome, and that the Romans already featured prominently in Origins and we just got Ancient Greece, which greatly influenced Roman culture and architecture, while getting actual ancient Rome could be cool, there are a lot of locations I'd rather see them go to before revisiting Rome, Asia in particular is still untouched by the main series.

Yikes. They are going to have to tread very, very carefully. Norse iconography has been co-opted by some very nasty groups. God of War was able to manage it by pretty much redefining Kratos' character.

Ghosts of Tsushima looks like an AC game set in Japan. I would love an Ac game set in Japan but I can't see it happening anytime soo . While they have already used China/India for Chronicles which gave me the impressiin that they don't want those locations for the main games. Maybe ancient Mongolia or Korea.

Didn't Ac1 feature Damascus, Syria?

1. Agreed I honestly think this convinced developers to definitely not go with Japan to avoid any comparisons to this game when it comes out. Only seen a few clips but GOT looks like it could be incredible.

2. I think if I remember right a dev said China & India have similar issues to what they worried about in AC 3, there not being enough high buildings to give that usual feel the games have.

3. Mongolia would be epic, if they ever do it would make an excellent reason to bring back the first assassin Altair as the lore already has a story of him his son, wife and a Mongol assassin working together to kill Genghis Khan who has the Sword of Eden.

1. Japan at this point almost seems too easy to me.
So many games recently gone with the setting, i would like it more if they instead go to settings that havent been used that much.
Of course one day we will see a AC in Japan but that is not a priority imo.

2.I dont think the hight is a problem, in origins and odyssey i barely climbed up buildings and i dont see this personally as a problem.
They go so far away from the assassins aspect, its more of a action adventure rpg so climbing buildings etc isnt that huge imo.

3.Oh nice i didnt knew all that...i just lost track of the lore of AC thats why im all in for a huge reboot that streamlines the story or "simplyfies" it because im totally lost.
Mongolia would be awesome, i have never seen a game take place there...it would be so unique.

Cool I have noticed this myself in what little of it I have played and I think that's probably why they stuck the statues of the Olympians in it.

Yeah the lore has been a bit too convoluted for me since they killed off Desmond. Wish they would have the bottle to just bring him back.

You got any specific settings & time periods in mind?

I haven't played Odyssey, but I hope they bring back the progress tracker.

I keep forgetting the Middle East is a part of Asia, I mean Eastern Asia, more along the lines of China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, etc. There's a huge amount of untapped potential there for the franchise.

I'd love to see Genghis Khan in an AC game, so the late song dynasty would be a fascinating time period imo.

I started playing odyssey late, took a break to beat Sekiro instead...

It is an impressive game...but it also kind of feels like chore to play imo. I think they overdid it on the map size.

To me, I didn't really like Origins and I thought the map was too big and the missions were full of "follow this person, go to this destination only to follow another person" it was a bit tiring, I didn't bother to finish 30+ side missions, and I have the same concerns with Odyssey.

I am obsessed with origins. Such a romantic setting, very Laurence of Arabia. I’m actually replaying it now! I wonder if it’s worth getting the dlc? It’s still so overpriced

Yeah as a I said to Mani-Man there is actually a really cool story with Altair the first assassin from the franchise going with his wife, son and a Mongol assassin to take down Khan.

If they did revisit and decided to tell that story I would want them to commit to at least two games for it as there is so much to tell and so much to do. As you would have four different assassins to act as each with differing strengths.

China would be a personal favorite of mine I would like to see done in a full game but not as well versed on their history so don't know what time period you would go for to get the most out of it.

Oh yeah, i think so far its my favorite setting.
The Vibrant colors, the landscape, its all so incredible to look at.
Sadly it didnt get the same level of content Odyssey gets, you pretty fast got to the point where you have seen all...which of course is also because you have to a large extent "just" sand and that can get a bit boring after a while.
Odysseys landscape has a bit more variety and more missions, weapons etc.

I do hope we get back there one day because i dont think we "need" to lock a setting into just one game.
You can go back there a few hundred years later or so and tell another story.
But for now i just wanna meet the Viking "Assassins", dont care for anything else. :D
