Oblivion - Part 1

I bought this on Blu-Ray for $8 at Best Buy. That alone was worth it.

But - I haven't really made up my mind on it. Visually, it's really nothing like I've ever seen before. It's compelling and just mesmerizing to look at. Story-wise, it's lacking, but I don't know if the visuals make up for the lack of story. It's definitely frustrating for me. I want to say I absolutely LOVE it, and then I find myself shrugging at how bland some of it is. I definitely think it's lightyears better than Prometheus though, no question.

I gave it a watch today. It was fine. Don't think I'll watch it again, but it was okay. I'd give it 6.

You mean the drones being used for war? Didn't Star Wars Prequels

No, I meant drones being used for war as they are currently used by the USA, and how that affects society and other soldiers. That wasn't done by star wars at all, the drones were just drones, they had no impact on the sociology of the living soldiers. Anakin was the same pilot he would have been if he had been fighting human captains and not robot captains.

In contrast, Jack Harper's main task is to repair drones, and it is directly because of this consequential distance from the war that it takes him a long time to realize the magnitude of jis crimes and complicity. Exactly the same with modern drone warfare, wars have bigger public support nowadays in the west since people are more removed ftom it. The movie makes clear that Jack Harper is a good man, but the physical separation from the war prevents him from seeing its horror, and thus contributes to his duplicity. He switches sides after sering the actions of a drone up close, a scene that slso demonstrates the pros and cons of drones as a military weapon in a manner not shown in your star wars prequels example.

Drone warfare is the core allegory of the movie, that has never or nearly never been done before in a hollywood blockbuster and you somehow missed that it was a core theme.

Why the comparison to Promotheus?

So that's what you meant with Drone warfare, well, it does go down to the "the world is not what you believe" theme, but you're right, i can't think of any film that deals with a main character that is helping killing without realising it. But i just don't think the film does that theme very well, it should indeed be done more in movies though, a person suddenly realising that he's actually the one helping "terrorism" or war going on.

I just saw this. First time since when I saw it in the theater.
GOd damn this movie is pretty. Not to mention the sound effects and the amazing score:atp:

Did the comic ever come out for this?

Aside from some talk of Tom Cruise and the visual style of the movie, i'dd say that redlettermedia's review is very spot on about what i think worked and didn't with the movie.

I'm telling ya..it's one of those things where the book was being used as a pitch for a movie. Same thing with Cowboys and Aliens.

They're almost like faux graphic novels. They exist but don't.

I actually read Cowboys and Aliens. I think it was first issue. It looked nothing like the film's previews, which I never got around to watching.

I also want to check out the Noah comic too.

Surprisingly positive review from two guys who normally love to complain. Mostly a strong review I think.

When they go watch a movie they don't exactly want to complain, with most blockbusters they even go in with low expectations. Sometimes they don't offer as many explanations as they should, and i don't allways agree with them, but i think they have a general idea of how cinema and certain films work.

This is one of those films that, if I'm switching channels and one is playing this, I always stop and watch some (or all) of it. It's just a delight of a movie.
I used to do the same when I had cable. I saw big chunks of it from whatever point I jumped in on it multiple times.
