To tell The Infinity Gauntlet properly they will need to make the film two, if not three, films. Yes, this definitely runs into some contractual concerns. But in this case all parties stand to make a boatload of cash, so I suspect they can figure it out. They really have to go all out on this one. We need The Avengers, The Guardians of the Galaxy, Dr. Strange, & Ant-Man vs. Thanos and his minions. (Personally I'd let The Defenders deal with the local level stuff on their Netflix show).

Thus the IG would feature:

Hulk

Black Widow
Scarlet Witch
Quicksilver
Vision
Star-Lord
Drax
Gamora

This way the entirety of the Marvel Universe will be represented: earth's heroes, cosmic heroes, mystical heroes, and "Miracle" heroes (mutants).

If Devin's scoop is true, I'm going to bummed if Whedon isn't coming back for a third Avengers pic. I'd like him to break that Marvel Studios tradition of "2 franchise films per director" and do a full trilogy.

I think he'll do another Avengers or at least Marvel film. If AoU goes well Marvel will want to keep him but it will depend on how much he has going on. He might want a break so they can bring him back after A3.

Well it makes sense in the way that Thanos is so far away from the complete Infinity Gauntlet and that they seem to build his presence up so slowly. I can dig it.

If this rumour is true and Avengers 4 is May 2019. Then they could do it like this.

Avengers 2 - Ends with Hulk being blasted into Space.
Cap 3 - A sort of Civil war splitting the heroes into Iron man camp and Cap camp. (Cap dies or feigns death) Tony retires and hands over to Rhodey.
Gotg 2 - They have part of the Planet Hulk story line with Hulk fighting in the arena. They could even fight him.
Avengers 3 - World war Hulk. Fighting new Avengers led by Bucky. Thanos leads Hulk to believe that it was Avengers fault that planet is destroyed, sends him for revenge.
Avengers 4 - Infinity War. All heroes unite (including original Avengers) to fight Thanos.

(since a lot of the actors wont appear in Avengers 3 they will still be under contract).

Speculation ahead

This whole Civil War thing is very interesting, and I now expect something very different, though ultimately ending with the Infinity Gauntlet story still. All the reports we've been hearing leads me to believe we'll be seeing a New Avengers movie for Avengers 3, which I'd personally title Marvel's The Avengers: Disassembled.

Captain America 3 will likely leave the concept of the Avengers in ruin, which would leave Tony Stark with another tainted ruined legacy. So in one final attempt to redeem himself, he hires a new team of Avengers, leaving them to operate as the worlds 'New Avengers'. Those would be Ant-Man, Wasp, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Vision, Mockingbird, and also Captain Marvel/Black Panther dependant on their involvement in Phase 3. Ideally I'd have Hank Pym lead the team as the guy taking charge at the base kind of deal, assuming he survives. A team along these lines would then take on the logical villains following Civil War - the Masters of Evil. A team of villains assembled essentially as a Hydra kill-squad, lead by Baron Helmut Zemo, approved by the Military and Government due to some hidden Hydra influence. Zemo would have his own plan - to return the Red Skull using an Infinity Stone. This then ties the story to the overall MCU, and follows on from Cap with the Hydra influence. Ideally my Masters would consist of Zemo, Loki, Abomination, Crossbones, Absorbing Man, Madame Hydra, and maybe Bullseye. The movie would then play out however it'd play out, but the end would be the link to Avengers 4 - Thanos being revealed to be working with the Red Skull, who knew Hydra would attempt to find him, and Loki revealed to be working with Zemo in an attempt to redeem himself in Thanos' eyes. Thanos then claims the last stone and leaves, but the Masters are defeated - the New Avengers still 'win', but Thanos now has all the stones.

Then you lead straight into Marvel's The Avengers: Infinity War, where the Guardians arrive on Earth and the original Avengers are forced to assemble once more to finally work together to save the universe, despite their differences, and would be where the big three (or four, counting Hulk) would reconcile and become Avengers once more. This concludes the overall story arc so far, and allows the repercussions of Civil War to be resolves as well.

The Avengers is still my favorite Marvel film. He brought these characters to life better than anybody IMO. It remains to be seen if Whedon can capture lightening in a bottle twice with Age of Ultron but the trailer looks beyond amazing so I'm extremely optimistic. If this is indeed Whedon's last Avengers film however, count me among the disappointed as well because I am still in awe of what he did the first time around.

I can understand if he needs a break though. With Gunn and the Russos, Marvel still has some great talent in their new movie bullpen but I hope Whedon stays involved. Also as much as I loved the film, I don't want to see everything in the tone of Winter Soldier.
