Official Contest of Marvels II Discussion Thread

I found a quote finally. Of course, it's Wikipedia:

"Vampires also had a mystical aversion to entering any human dwelling place to which they were not verbally invited."

Of course, an "aversion" doesn't mean that they won't. But, the article did help me with my decision.

I'm pretty sure vampires in the MU do not require an invitation. Of course, I could be wrong.

Another busy week for Harlekin! Here is who has matches on Friday:

Zoken, Harlekin = 4
Hippy Fascist, JewishHobbit, *Trigger = 3
Annoying Silence, Kytrigger, Wolverine25th, Hellstormer, Wiegeabo = 2
DarkHellRider, Phaedrus45, Iceman/Psylocke, Midnight Ice, Darthphere = 1
Ahura Mazda = 0

Goddamnit, that means I get through all my matches way too fast, and I'll be left with little to no debating in the later weeks of the round. 4 matches, hope they go better then they go this week.

I VOTED FOR PRODIGY :woot:

Anyone who takes a drunken swing at stark is ok in my book! :word:

The "You debated so you get my vote" policy. Fair play for those who put in the effort or cruel and unusual form of e-bullying?????

I think it's fair since if you want it badly enough you can always find a pc (go to the library)

On the other hand if you have a reasonable excuse like trigger or you're ill then it can be kinda harsh.

Me I find the middle ground and simply use it to decide a close thing. If someone would obviously win a match 9/10 times then you've got to give it to them even if they don't debate.

Hmmmmmmm......

My formula:

Look through the matches and decide who I would like to see win

Then read the debates to see how the contestants are used

Then decide if the debates were strong enough to pull me one way or the other

Lastly, vote how I see fair and adequate.

So in essance, if I 100% believe that Beak can beat Drax, but the only debate written was of Drax beating Beak.... if that debate didn't convince me, then I'm going to stick with Beak for my vote. However, I always keep an open mind and DO NOT play favorates, as to be fair to all parties. I'm not against people voting against people for having no write up, it's just not me.

In a close match, I will give the advantage to the debator. But, if I sincerly believe that the undebated character would win, then I won't. (Like with Sasquatch versus Blizzard.) Simply put, many times an opening debate doesn't really get a debator's mind going. You are waiting for the sparing, and if it doesn't happen, I, personally, feel like I wasn't given a chance to give it my all. (Case in point, I went back to my Ultimus match, and decided I should give a second debate to prove my match enough for those who might just like Doppleganger as a character.)

BTW, for those interested, here is a link to my second "ten questions" thread. It just gives those interested a chance to know your fellow Hypers a bit better...getting beyond the usual comic questions.

Ok, Hippy, you have to tell me more:

8) What's the worst injury (or boo-boo) you've ever had?
Broken Spine, Cracked Ribs, Punctured/Collapsed Lung, Torn Liver, Shattered elbow. IN ONE GO!

Black cab slammed into me at 30mph while I was walking across the road. Broke my spine (rods bolted onto that) and shattered my elbow (pins in that) But now for some reason i'm stronger, I can run faster (it loosened up my right leg which has always been kinda sucky) and I lost a ****load of weight! Awesomeness :woot:

ok, I'm confused on one point. JH, if you can give me an answer, it would help. I understand you cannot use another character for help, like Cyclops couldn't ask Forge to build him a weapon to take out Ultimus. But, for me, it seems unreasonable that someone like Kingpin or Mandarin wouldn't use the resources normally available for them, i.e. the underground, to learn information about other people.

Personally I would say that is about tech since otherwise every x-man would essentially have forge's + their own which would suck.

Their network of informers ARE these kind of characters' Databases. It's about keeping information on your enemies. Whether it's being extracted from a microchip or human brain info is just that. I would have no problem with say Reed Going to cap for tactical advice but i draw the line at him borrowing caps shield. So as far as I'm concerned information is information...

What I see is that we have two competing rules. The latest is this:

I said long ago that we cannot use people as resources, so I think that can apply here. Basically, when it comes to preptime or anytime in this tourney, it's one on one. I've always kinda had the thought in mind that people are pulled for their fight, and when done they're returned with a whiped mind, but when they return for round 2, they remember the tourney again. Something like that.

But anyhow, I'd say no to having other people around for your preptime.

But, in the official rules at the beginning, we said the following:

Added rules by JH:

One thing I do want to expand on though is the mention of resources. Your example of Thing using the FF database as a resource, but Spidey can't is fine, but I want to make a little closer line in regards to teammates. Thing cannot use a doohicky made by Reed unless it was specifically made for the Thing. If Reed's made some telepathic blocker, the Thing cannot go and use it because his teammate used it, it's Reed's resource not Thing's. Also, just because you're on a team, doesn't mean everything that team has is at your disposal. Example... Gambit cannot use Cerebro because he's not telepathic and he's never used Cerebro... but he could probably use a smaller, less effect, hand held cerebro unit, as those can be used by any X-Man (main X-men, not the offshoot X-Characters or students and such). Basically what I"m saying is, use common sense on resources and if you aren't sure about something, just ask. Comments questions?

For me, characters like Mandarin, Yellow Claw, Kingpin, Baron Zemo, and the like all use their minions to provide for them. It is one of their resources, and also, their connection with the underground is how they dig up that information. In previous debates, we've allowed the characters to determine information in this way...but, I noticed that the Kingpin/Mandarin match was going with the new ruling presented last week.

On the resources issue, I always imagine they are alone during prep-time. They can be where ever best serves their needs, even if it's not a place they normally visit, but still have access to. (Like reserve Avengers having access to the Mansion.) But there are no people around to get help from (sometimes this hurts me).

As for characters like Mandarin and Kingpin who would rely on their networks, I refuse to believe they wouldn't have an actual database of information they could access about all the characters they've encountered. This means they likely couldn't get information about characters they haven't encountered yet, even though someone in their network may have. Again, this may be limiting, but it fits in with how I envision prep-time.

How about if everyone uses this as their sig for the duration of the contest...We'll get a lot more votes

Vote in the contest of marvels...it's AWESOME!!!

thread 1
thread 2
thread 3
thread 4
That is awesome. (Personally, the only reason I've never promoted the threads much is my worry that the people who aren't in the contest or don't understand it might not take into consideration the debates.)

Now all we need is for the links to update themselves to point at the post introducing the latest battle.

It's not e-bullying to vote for someone just because their opponent didn't debate IMO. The way I decide these is largely based off of the debates presented, and if you don"t debate, then you are at an extreme disadvantage. You can almost always find a way for a character to beat another no matter how outclassed they are.

Also, when I vote ofr someone elese since their opponent didn't debate, that's all it is. Maybe the person was sick/on vacation/just really busy. I'm not voting on who's a better person or anything, just on a comic book battle.

I basically handle JH's method. See who I think would win. Read through the debates and decide. If you don't debate, you don't get a vote. It's stuck with me from my DTL days, in which not having a write-up meant the same thing, no matter how lame the other person's write-up was.

I think we should all acknowledge that today is a very special day for JH. You just know he's been waiting down the months for the new Kelly Pickler album that came out today, and I bet he's been doing nothing but listening to it this entire Halloween evening.

BTW, I bought the new Meat Loaf and the new The Who album. I haven't had a chance to listen to either...I hope they are good. Oddly enough, not a single DVD came out that I wanted to buy today.

The only DVD out today that I though tof buying wsa MI-3. Even though I despise Tom Cruise, I love JJ Abrams and thought the movie was pretty good...

I love Abrams, too...but, really didn't like that movie. Even though they tried to portray it as a team movie, all the action was still pretty much done by Tom Cruise.

Now, bring on Casino Royale!

(I'm wanting to go to bed; but, I'm staying up waiting for an ebay auction to end in less than an hour. I'm going to be a last second bidder. It seems to be the only way to win an auction.)

Four very close matches so far:

Random 6-5 over Hisako Ichiki, Maxam 6-5 over Microbe, Beast 6-5 over Armageddon, and Donald Pierce and Prodigy are tied again 6-6.

(I'm happy. I won the three ebay auctions I was going for. Conan, Web of Spider-Man, and John Carter comic sets.)
