Official Contest of Marvels II Discussion Thread

I can't believe it. Sitting by my side right now are three packages ready to be shipped. Wiegeabo, DarkHellRider, and JewishHobbit should (hopefully) have their packages go out today during my lunch break!!! I only need to hear from Ahura, as he's the booby-prize winner of Round 2. (Hellstormer dropped out and Darth didn't compete enough in that round to warrant having the worst record...so, it seems to me that Ahura has that proud honor.)

Since it's taken me a while, I boosted the amount of comics you guys could expect. I think each box has roughly 50 comics. JH has the Silver Surfer pack, DarkHellRider has the Ghost Rider pack, and Wiegeabo has the Web of Spider-Man pack.

It was going to end today; but, I sent JH a PM giving him 24 hours to vote. So, definitely by tomorrow at this time.

Usually the matches I make in Sparta's Marvel Character Tournament Thread are rather one-sided; but, the battle between Blink and Vision is neck and neck. If you guys get a chance to vote, pop over there and let me know who you think would win. (Also, if you guys can think of any matches that you believe would be good, I'd appreciate it. Like I said, many are blowouts.)

I saw two really good DVDs recently. Yesterday, I watched a documentary that came out called Deliver Us From Evil. It mainly follows one Catholic priest who had a history of abusing children a good 20 years, and the Church constantly moving him around from parish to parish after complaints would be filed. It's a powerful film. And, what's really shocking and sickening is this priest is free, roaming around Italy, while little children are filmed walking all around him. At one point, he walks up to a playground and looks into it. Just creepy.

Another one is Little Children. This was a very difficult film for me to watch. I turned it off twice; but, it's worth sticking with. There are a variety of themes that play into this movie, mainly how we sometimes focus on ourselves more than others in trying to satisfy our needs. For me, it was very hard to see the main character, played by Kate Winslet, ignore her child, almost to the point of child abuse. Her beautiful daughter is almost a burden to her...and, seeing this little girl long for the affection of her mother was the most difficult aspect of watching the film. Also, in seeing the two characters ignore their obligations to their families, and mainly their children, really upset me. I actually have friends that long for love so much, they take the idea that "you can't love someone else unless you're happy" to an extreme. They forsake their obligations or commitments in order to find this elusive happiness many crave. Of course, I could go farther into this; but, I figure everyone probably gets what I'm trying to say. (There is an example that kept coming to mind in my head of something that's happening with my best friend. She had a crush on her step-father's best friend...the step-father's best friend was in a love-less marriage with two children, ages 10 and 12... he found out about the crush, left his wife, and my best friend and her step-father's best friend started dating....at one point, he couldn't sleep in his old home any longer, the wife who he seperated from was in a mental institution for the third time after he left her, he went over to his house, tucked his two kids into bed, then left them alone in the house. Man, this pissed me off. I told my best friend that he has an obligation to his kids more than making himself happy by dating a younger woman, and what he did was wrong on so many counts. Of course, it's after I heard this that I watch this film, and it just upset me more that people can be so self-centered.)

I wasn't expecting that many comcis. :wow:

You're the man now, Phaed! :word:

The packages have gone out Priority Mail. I would think everyone should receive their packages by Monday. The one going to California should be there by Friday.

On a side note, I got some great comics through ebay. I've started to look out for those people who do "Buy It Now." I bought Howard The Duck 1-20 for 19.99, and they are all in at least Very Fine condition. I have quite a few of those issues; but, I didn't have issues 1, 2, 12, or 13. Plus, since issues 12 & 13 are first appearance of Kiss, they are going for over $40.00 each on Milehigh. (I've noticed MileHighComics.com has raised their prices quite a bit. I used to get a bunch of comics for a dollar...but, they seem to have all been raised to two bucks within the last two months.) I also got Uncanny X-Men 151-154 & 156 in Near Mint condition for $9.99 and Omega The Unknown 1-10 for $14.99.

Now, don't forget Mother's Day is Sunday. Treat your moms to a special day. (Sadly, for my son's b-day I bought him tickets to the Mariners first four weekend games, one each Saturday. This week, I couldn't get tickets on Saturday, as the M's are playing the Yankees. I did get tickets for Sunday, not realizing it's Mom's Day when I bought them 2 months ago.)

Okay, got my voting in. Sorry for the delay guys... been another one of those weeks, though not as bad as some previous. And Phaed, I'm excited to get the comics. Again, I would like to confirm that you are the man.

Now on to my little bit of joyous excitment. Remember me mentioning a while ago that I wanted to get my comics bound into hardback volumes.... I did it... and they're back... AND I LOVE THEM!!!

They are three volumes of what I'm calling "The Spider-Man Saga." I'm binding spiderman (mixing all titles, some minis, and some guest stars) in a chronological reading order as detailed as I can. I am also separating the Volume count by titling eras (for lack of better words). This project is the first 3 volumes of an era I call "Nostalgia" because it's the era that first got me into comics back in the early 90's. These comics are very Nostalgic for me, so that's why I gave it the name. It will run 5 or 6 volumes until the "Clone Saga" era begins with a new volume 1. Each book is rougly 30 issues, and though there is minor gutter loss in places, it isn't enough to cause me a problem, and most of the books are perfectly fine. No words are cut out and only minor bits of art are loss from spreads. My only complaint with the volumes is something that was my own fault. There was a gatefold cover in volume 1 but I didn't specify that I wanted it bound so it folded out, and thus, it was kinda messed up in the binding (somehow cut so that the back part of the cover is alone and the other two fold out... though the pictures don't flow right as the first and last page are reversed)... no biggie though. I'm still pleased and instantly addicted. My whole comic collection will eventually be collected in volumes like this, though it will take quite some time. The reading orders of each book are below, followed by pics:

Nostalgia Book 1: Tales Of The Fallen (30 Issues)

Please tell me Spider-Man never got the Pheonix power...:xmen:

They are very awesome, btw. If you don't mind me asking, how much did one of them cost to have done?

I have that issue...but I can't remember how it went...it was just a one issue story.....

To hopefully break the two ties, I have PMed Zoken, who only voted in one thread this week, to see if he could vote in the other three. Also, I just noticed Hippy hasn't voted; so, hopefully he can vote also. I'd rather break the ties, especially since we haven't had some people vote yet. I'll keep it open for a bit longer. If we don't get votes, we'll just have to settle for the ties, I guess.

Thank you, Power, for voting. I'm keeping voting open, as Hippy said he'll have his votes in within the hour. So, we might still end up with some ties. We'll just have to wait and see how he votes.

Voting Is Over!!!

We still ended up with one tie, Her vs. Kurse. The next location is the Helicarrier. Everyone will start on either side of the Helicarrier bridge, and you have to stay within a mile of the carrier. It's very likely the carrier will crash (I can't imagine what Kurse would do onboard the carrier??!!??); but, if it crashes, let's figure it crashes in farmland in Kansas somewhere. That way, there really isn't that many people the participants can come across on the ground. Of course, the helicarrier needs people to fly the carrier; but, they will not engage in battle unless they are engaged.

Now, brackets will go up tomorrow, and that will put us back on our regular schedule, finally. I might get them up early today; but, it is Take Daughter To Work Thursday...so, we'll see if she lets me.

I. AM. KING.

Okay, so I didn't have any debates.

I still rock.

Phaedrus45, Kytrigger, Hippy Fascist = 4
Ahura Mazda, JewishHobbit = 2

Wiegeabo is having to debate his butt off this round. Ah, the price for being in first place during Round 2.:oldrazz:

Spidey teamed with Captain Britain and the rest of Excalibur to take on Juggernaut... then Nightmare and D'Spare showed up and all of Excalibur died save Captain Britain. Spidey realized that something wasn't right as he stood over Rachel. Then Brian was about to get killed and Spidey showed up all Phoenixed out and saves the day. Ends up he and Brian were prisoners of Arcade and Spidey pulled the machanics that imitated Rachel's Phoenix powers and placed them on himself. So no, he never had the powers, just imitation powers.

And as for price, the basic price for a basic volume of comics is $15 per volume. You also have to pay for shipping to and from, so that adds onto the $15 as well. Library Binding Company, who did mine, requires a minimum order of $30 prior to shipping, so you'd have to do two volumes at once unless you beef up one volume to over $30 with loads of extras.

If you guys are interested, I added my first comics that I have available for trade. It's a long way to go before I'm finished...but, go ahead and take a look from time to time if there is an issue in your collection you want but don't have. Some runs are quite extensive, like with Alpha Flight and Avengers.

Weig, if you want to forfeit against Kurse given the amount of matches you have, I would understand ;)

LOCATION: S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier

The Helicarrier, an aircraft carrier specifically designed to be itself capable of independent powered flight in addition to the conventional functions of aircraft carriers, is the signature capital ship of the fictional intelligence/defence agency S.H.I.E.L.D.

(Everyone will start on either side of the Helicarrier bridge, and you have to stay within a mile of the carrier. It's very likely with some battles the carrier might crash; if it does, let's figure it crashes in farmland in Kansas somewhere. That way, there really isn't that many people the participants can come across on the ground. Of course, the helicarrier needs people to fly the carrier; but, they will not engage in battle unless they are engaged.)
