He didn't knock it aside disrespectfully, indeed he builds on it very well.

I mean in the sense that DoFP begins with the theme and credit sequence of X1 and X2, along with the Patrick Stewart voice-over, as well as things like getting rid of Magneto's First Class costume and giving him an one much like the X1 costume.

The were never gonna keep the Fc outfit because it wasn't great and the new one doesn't look much like the OT one at all, its abit more comic faithful battle ready then the OT

The theme was because they had the X2 composer who wanted to use it again

All of that makes sense in the context of the movie. Xavier of the future is the one who knows what's happening in the future and is saying it to the audience. Magneto's costume change also makes sense since it's like 10 years later after FC and Magneto should be gearing towards a costume more like Ian McKellan's as he gets older.

Having the classic X-Men theme back was wonderful. As a director that was his theme he introduced in his movies, and he's just reintroducing it back into the franchise. It's hardly a declaration of "X-Men is MINE!!!!".

Magneto is much more like his vengeful X1 incarnation than the First Class version, for instance. We know he has to travel this path of course, but it's telling just how quickly he's got there.

In short, he's not like angry Magneto from the comics like he was in First Class?

Plus, many of the First Class characters are absent or dead.

We only see Havok and Beast, not Banshee. We don't know what becomes of Moira. And we don't get Emma, Azazel, Angel or Riptide. So a lot has been pushed aside.

That's true. Magneto's first Brotherhood of Mutants was set up for a sequel; now they're just dead. The first X-Men team had their first mission and learned their powers; now they're dead as well.

It's like the reverse of The Last Stand, which killed off the regulars to make way for younger (and cheaper) versions. DoFP kills off the First Class to give screentime to the original cast.

Well, of course any changes have to make sense in the context of the movie, or they would just be weird...

LOL no they don't. Plenty of movies have made changes that don't make sense in the context of the movie, or even in the context of the continuity of the movie franchise they're in. First Class for example.

I think you are looking to hard into finding ways to say bryan was pushing FC out because he wanted it like his films and that whenever he did hint to or link to FC It was just respecting it

Not sure why you are looking at it like that, it's all in use film making process, it's set 10 years after FC

What I said was, "He didn't knock it aside disrespectfully, indeed he builds on it very well."

Just got back from watching it and I'm ready to watch it again! So many Easter eggs, not enough eyes to take it all in. Justice has been done to the Xmen franchise. Loads of people gasped and cheered at the end. Such a great feeling in the cinema tonight. :yay:

not enough eyes to take it all in.

Singer and co deserve some kind of award for the sheer amount of stuff in this movie. It's mind-boggling. They also manage to give every single character something worthwhile to do, even those without lines get awesome action scenes on the front line.

Some awesome random moments in my head, shall post a review later, once spoilers are allowed. (SO FOR NOW WARNING SPOILERS!!):

Magnetos "So much for being a survivor" line to Logan

Charles meets Charles

The entire scene on the plane with Magneto and Xavier going at each other.

Blink and her powers are just :hubba

Magneto dragging Mystique along by a bullet.

Future sentinels and there adaptive ways.

Dat post credits scene:cwink:

Please list some examples for the court.

From First Class? For starters X1 said Charles and Eric met when they were teenagers. Second at the start of X-3 you see Charles bald, still walking, with Eric recruiting students for the school. In X-2 Eric said he helped Charles build Cerebro (which presumably is how he knew how to reprogram it to attack all the humans). Not to mention watching X-Men 1-3 you'd have NO idea Charles and Raven were ever close.

Need I go on?

Now obviously this is a pinch of salt type of thing but Lauren Schuler Donner just retweeted this

Retweeted by Lauren Shuler Donner X-Men 4 & 5 Campaign ‏@X4X5Campaign May 7
@BryanSinger @ShuDonner Big Thank u for bringing this impressive cast together! Hope we get more sequels w/ each cast

Now like I said it is highly likely she is just retweeting it because it is thanking her and Bryan but even still, nobody is taking away from me that she retweeted to hopefully get more sequels with both casts. Nobody! haha

She also retweeted something about Jim Lee's X-Men costumes a few days ago.

Hey there SHH! First time poster long time lurker here...

I just got back from seeing the film and I was floored by how good it was. I kept my expectations at the minimum and kept away from the spoilers as well, so I wasn't disappointed much at how some of the things turned out.

General observations (spoiler-heavy!):
- The opening credits sequence brought back all the great memories of seeing the trilogy's openings and those grand, bombastic musical themes. It gave me goosebumps and it also got me a little teary-eyed.

- Some of the dialogue was clunky and future scenes went a little too much into the exposition-heavy territory with regards to the time travel 'modus operandi 'and what lead to the apocalyptic future. Kind of understandable given the plot, but I felt it could have been done in a more casual way.
A single throwaway line about how Professor X was alive would have been welcome, but I guess the one given in The Wolverine works.

- Future Sentinels being developed
using Mystique's DNA: I get the logic behind this idea, but wasn't it already established that Mystique herself cannot copy another mutant's powers, only their appearance? When Wolverine cut 'her claws' off in X1, didn't she scream because it was essentially an organic part of her body? This plot point felt like it was written for Rogue initially and then changed for Mystique once they figured they couldn't have Rogue back in the '70s.

- Trask's motivation wasn't really clear. Why did he hate mutants so much? The whole 'homo sapiens vs. homo neanderthalensis' discussion sheds some light on the subject, but it felt like a lot of his character development was left on the cutting room floor. Some unresolved height issues?

- From technical standpoint, some parts of the film seemed really choppy and there were some really awkward transitions in-between scenes -- one that stood out the most to me was the scene where
Wolverine goes to the Buick and you're kind of lead to expect to see more of it, but then it abruptly cuts to the Trask's meeting with the Congress members.

- All of Quicksilver's scenes were amazing. A true standout character.

- I really appreciated visual flashbacks to other films in the series. It sort of cemented the fact that ALL of the films so far belonged to the same universe (minor inconsistencies aside), that none of them were being ignored and that they all had a purpose in the grand scheme of things. None of that "ignoring Superman III and Superman IV" crap. One thing, the end credits stated that the scenes from The Wolverine were used, but I can't remember seeing any of them...

- I'm probably going to get a lot of flack for this, but as one of the few ardent supporters of X3, DOFP was as equally -- if not more -- as guilty of some of the issues people fervently complain about X3. Namely,
useless mutant cameos and obvious fan-service. As great as Quicksilver was, there really was no point to the character beyond that rescue scene, and the less said about Havok's mutant army comrades the better. With X3 at least you knew they were there for quick visual gags, but here you were lead to expect them to actually have a greater effect on the overall story.

- Ugh, climax of the future scenes killed me...
Seeing Storm getting impaled and her lifeless body falling in slow-motion was gut-wrenching. It brought tears to my eyes. Halle was magnificent -- still no actual flying, only floating in mid-air, but she was amazing.

- Rogue's cut scene... Well, now that it's obvious where it would have been placed, Singer was right in cutting it. It really would have messed up the flow of the sequence and kill the sense of urgency. Looking forward to seeing it completed on Blu-ray.

- Not to knock the final conflict/resolution in the '70s down,
but I thought it was strange that the Sentinel project got so quickly shelved by the US government especially after having the public witness the full extent of Magneto's attack. And even though she shot Magneto, Mystique still held a gun pointed at the president AND IT WAS ALL TELEVISED. I don't know, it just all felt too forced, pushing the film to a semi-happy, albeit open ending.

(Unless, of course, the public was only lead to believe that the project was deactivated and that Trask was arrested for arms trafficking.)

- The ending was very
bittersweet to me. It was great seeing OT characters at a happy place, but the sense of 'passing the torch' to FC characters was very obvious. Though slightly open-ended, I doubt we'll be seeing further OT films, and I'm strangely fine with that. Either way, it's good to know that regardless of what happens in Apocalypse and films that follow it, these characters will have a happy ending -- even though it kind of essentially kills any risk and sense of dread we as audience members may feel for these characters, but who knows, further installments may surprise us all.

At one point, due to soft focus and warm colors I wondered if the ending was actually Logan hallucinating as he was dying from drowning. This might be a preferred interpretation for people who hate happy endings :D

Oh, and can I just say that I freaking loved this whole concept of rebooting the series without actually rebooting it. It's simply brilliant.

- End-credits scene was kind of cool but probably confusing/irrelevant for general audience members. I guess it needed more punch, maybe? I was more awed by the fact that my theater didn't cut the credits midway like they usually do and actually showed the scene, lol.

All in all, a fantastic entry in the series. I'll have to give it a few more viewings before I make the final judgment, but so far I'd rank the series like this:
- X3 (deal with it :word:)
- X1 / X: DofP
- X2 / X: FC
- TW
- XO:W

Anyway, I'm happy to have finally registered here and I'm looking forward to discussing the past and future X-films with you guys! It's been my favorite sci-fi/superhero franchise since I was 15.

Screw it, I'll just say it; this has always been my preferred Marvel Cinematic Universe. There's just something about X-Men.

X-Men frankly deserves its own universe. If anything, DOFP has shown me that the MCU formula is really kinda bland and uninteresting in comparison to this and earlier X-Men films. The MCU films may be good for the most part but they are still lacking substance overall. X-men really does have a depth to it that I feel is unrivaled by all Marvel movies, and even some WB films as well. Hopefully with Singer steering the franchise back on course it can start genuinely reaching it's potential. I've heard people say they want X-Men back at Marvel, at this point in time that would be a huge mistake.

We did get Azazel and Angels [BLACKOUT]pictures dead from experiments when Mystique is in Trask building[/BLACKOUT] and Emma [BLACKOUT]was mentioned with all of them in the plane scene as dead and Magneto said that which was different from that clip we got before movie came out[/BLACKOUT]

I love the MCU movies, but if this is the direction the X-Men movies are now going in, I have no desire to see them team up.

It could be cool if they did...but for now, I'm happy for them to stay in their own film universe for now.
