8/10 or 9/10. In that one I found myself rooting for Magneto and literally felt his pain. In DOFP, it feels like Magneto does the same crap over again. In FC, we see why Erik wants Shaw and everyone like him dead, we see his mother die. In DOFP, Erik just exacerbating his own problems. Mystique is sad she lost Azazel, but Azazel is not in the film so the connection to that pain and her mission is never really something I cared about.

I guess we are on the same page for prefering FC to DoFP.

I just saw it..

Wow!
If X1 was singer's "SF2 World Warrior" and X2 was his HF, then this is his ST (unless Apocalypse manages to top this)

Even if you hate the Singer films and you love FC, I would recommend seeing the film. It. is basically a FC sequel.

Pros
--Acting all around. If FC was Young Magnus film, then DFOP is young Xavier, MAcAvoy;s. Dinklage was good;I wish just wish we saw more of him.
--SFX
Fights , when they happened, were very cool. IF you like MVC style assists, you will like Blink.
--The last 30 minutes...and the ending! Superb
--Humor. This is surprisingly one of the more funny x-flicks IMO.
--The references/flashbacks to the other films
--Wolverine having a good presence in the film, but not overpowering everyone
--end credit scene was hype!
--Chris Claremont and Len Wein cameos in the Congressional hearing!

Cons -
--Even though we were told the future scenes would be limited, they need 1/2 more sequences with them especially in the middle of the film.
. I feel that after the initial 10 min setup in the future, and before the end, Singer kinda lets us almost forget the future characters.
--While I am the last person to need an action fix, the middle or so needed some more hard hitting action to break up some other scenes.
--While I followed the time travel quite well, I'd have wanted some kind of explanation of how Kitty can just send people back. Secondary mutation, Charles boosting her powers, etc something
--

I cant give a rating yet, but IMO its tied with Winter Soldier. Its singers best and continues to steer the x-train back from the abyss that Brett Ratner and Gavin Hood and Tom Rothman led it into.

I watched this last night, and upon first viewing, I would have to say it is my…third favorite X-Men film. Liked it a lot, but X2 and FC are still at the top for me.

The basic plot is familiar to anyone who’s picked up an X-Men comic or watched the 90’s Cartoon. I very much love the fact that, above all, this is mainly a sequel to First Class. And much like how Matthew Vaughn captured that 60’s feel in First Class, Singer managed to do the same with this movie. As for the characters:

Professor X/Charles: This is his movie, without a doubt. James McAvoy turned in a great performance and did an effective job in anchoring the film. I like that, similar to Christian Bale’s Batman, he gets to play different versions of the same character. In FC, he was the caddish young man full of hope, almost to the point of naivete, and here, we get to see him play angry/bitter before he starts to show us an Xavier that’s slowly becoming the Patrick Stewart version.

Magneto/Erik: Young Mags was pretty much my favorite character in FC, and FC Erik may go down as my favorite X-Film character period. While I still love Fassbender’s performance, I can’t say the same for DOFP Magneto. That’s probably because in this movie, he essentially becomes a young Ian Mckellen, embracing his darker side. I love how Fass obviously went to lengths to make sure his accent was in line with Ian’s.

Wolverine/Logan: This film shows Logan in the role I always felt he should have: As the Han Solo of the movie, not the Han Solo AND the Luke Skywalker at the same time. Logan was pretty funny in this, and the only thing that was missing was a truly badass Wolverine fight. I wouldn’t mind if this was Jackman’s last outing. He’s already one of the three best lead superhero performers in CBM history.

Mystique/Raven: Just like the comics, Mystique is at the heart of the murder that causes the story’s bleak future. What I like about Jennifer Lawrence’s performance is that she captures a mystique that is right in between her FC self and the mystique of the OT.

Beast/Hank: Basically just along for the ride. Hoult did a solid job of being Xavier’s wingman.

Trask: He served the story pretty well, even if we don’t get some complex reasoning as to why he wants to obliterate mutants. Dinklage is just the man regardless.

Quicksilver/Peter: Its true…he’s the breakout character. He honestly reminded me of a live action version of The Flash from the JL/JLU cartoon. The filmmakers wisely commented on the comic book connection between QS and Magneto while leaving it ambiguous.

Havok/Toad/Ink: I get Havok’s role in the story as Raven has ties to him and she dosen’t want to see another friend get murdered. Everyone else was just window dressing.

Stryker: Didn’t really add much besides giving Logan the willies and get his ass kicked repeatedly by Mystique. A nice walking easter egg, nothing more. That end twist was nice, though.

Old Professor X: I don’t think I appreciated Stewart’s Prof X as much as I did in this movie. The meeting of young and old Charles is without a doubt one of the best scenes in the film.

Old Magneto: Feels like he didn’t get much to do. Regardless, his final scene with Charles was still touching. Wish we would’ve seen what he was up to in the new timeline.

Kitty: While integral to the plot, still didn’t really do much. Still, its nice to see what Ellen Page is like when she’s in a good X-Film.

Storm/Iceman/Colussus/Bishop/Blink/Warpath/Sunspot: If you were a diehard fan of any of these characters, I feel kinda bad for you. They were essentially there to show off their powers and fight sentinels. They were kinda like glorified Red Shirts. However, they did serve their purpose, and we get some cool looking scenes from them.

Scott/Jean: I didn’t think they would top “The Wolverine” in terms of sheer Jean Grey beauty. However, just like Stryker, I was wrong. Very nice to see her alive again. As for Cyclops…Scott is my favorite X-Man. Bringing him back to life does not erase the crappy treatment he’s gotten through the films, but anything that erases storylines for “The Last Stand” is fine by me.

I definitely want to see this again. I can’t say its better than “Winter Soldier”, but I can’t say it’s worse either. While this film opens up a new chapter for the X-Films, I feel like it’s the “Dark Knight Rises” of the original series as well. In any event, the next film should be interesting.

Literally just watched FC again and I still think it is better than DoFP but DoFP is an excellent movie.

This has probably already been brought up but can anyone explain to me [BLACKOUT]why Mystique was impersonating Stryker at the end there?[/BLACKOUT]

Could be longer, but still 10/10.
It's obvious this movies just crushes TWS, and smashes TASM2.

PS
Where is Pinky's post with his arguments?

[BLACKOUT]How much of the timeline do you think it wiped out/re-done?[/BLACKOUT]

10/10 . The genre has come a long way since 1999.

Liam,

It's the one nagging issue I have with this film. With Xavier's voice over at the end of the film, it set the stage for a drastically different outcome for those four prequel characters.

And yet, we have this weird moment that slightly ruins the beauty of the ending that Singer creates. Two viewings in and I still don't know how I feel about it.

I hope in X-men Apocalypse they let McAvoy do the voiceover finally.

It was a great film, rare movie that lives up to the hype.

I assume it was to get [BLACKOUT]Wolverine out of the water[/BLACKOUT] and to [BLACKOUT]help him escape[/BLACKOUT] later. Probably was working with [BLACKOUT]Xavier[/BLACKOUT] on that.

Days of Future Past is a very solid adaptation of the story arc from the comics. The X-Men movie universe before this point was pretty screwed up. X-Men 3 and Origins sucked, and a lot of characters died or got depowered in X3. A reboot was needed, so we got First Class. However, First Class was still tied to the universe anyway. Singer expertly reboots X-Men without a reboot/remake unlike TASM or BB. Accepting the bad stuff from X3, the future gets even worse. Wolverine is sent back in time to save his world and this cinematic universe.

Just like TASM2, the emotion and chemistry is very strong in this film and it's a major key point for the film. Every character has a major contribution to the story. While the trilogy felt more like Wolverine and the X-Men than just X-Men, this film manages to share it's runtime quite equally between its players.

I felt like we should have had more future scenes in the film, too bad the Rogue set piece was eliminated. Just 15 more minutes in the future probably would have done the trick for me. However, with what we were given, both the future and especially the past are done with precision. You really get into a solid 70s atmosphere in this film. Wolverine is their for us, he is basically the audience in the film. Jackman is once again awesome as the Wolverine.

The future and the beginning of the film is heavy on exposition. It's super heavy, it felt like the crawling text from Star Wars. After the first 10 minutes or so this slows down, but there are still more bits of heavy exposition.

The effects overall were a mixed bag. The CGI for the future scenes looked very nice. However the 70s Sentinels looked a bit off. The scene where Magneto places metal on the transporting Sentinels for example just looked off to me. The wire work for Beast were terrible. This type of work was shoddy back in 2009 with Origins and they did not make any progress in 2014.

I was really happy that we got the main theme from X2 back and revamped a bit. That was really something special. The ending is spectacular as well. I'm surprised that I didn't have that spoiled to me beforehand. Everything is resolved very nicely in the end.

The acting ranged from great to serviceable. So that's pretty nice. The action was nicely done. The humor was very good, but I think they should have cut down just a tiny bit on it. Quicksilver was really cool, but damn, he was such a plot device. He shows up, helps them free Magneto, and leaves. Felt similar to GG in TASM 2 to me.

Another solid entry in the X-Men universe. It's now fixed, so hopefully everything will be smooth sailing with Apocalypse and the next Wolverine film. I appreciate the film for referencing everything even the films that this series definitely shouldn't be proud of. It was able to set up the future like all blockbuster films do nowadays, but it was still very super entertaining in its own right.

9.5

Just watched the movie! Loved it 8/10

Really reminded of X2, Similar pace and a lil bit action here and there!

+Story
+Magneto/Charles - From both times.
++++ Quicksilver = BEST PART OF THE MOVIE
+All of the future scenes.
+That ending
+timelines are fixed!

-Beast, was simply meh, oh and Beast/Hulk mode not cool.
-Underused mutants
-A lot of talking, really a lot (not that I am against, but just really there was a lot of talking and some times unnecessary)
-Naked wolverine, that was really unnecessary.

Great movie nonetheless! A must watch, but man why couldn't they just use X3 Beast design? It was the best by far.

I think I need to see it a second time to really review it. It was good though, and upon thinking about it, X2 is still my favorite of the series.

I almost agree with this one! One thing that X2 messed for me was lack of Cyclops. But we did get of the best intros, plus imo the definitive Wolverine in the mansion scene.

Here's my review of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Bryan Singer, the original director of X-Men & X2, and producer of Matthew Vaughn’s excellent X-men: First Class is back in the director’s seat. The film was written by Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goldman & Simon Kinberg, based off Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s Days of Future Past comic book storyline.

It’s a dystopian future where Mutants are placed in internment camps, or slaughtered like animals by the mutant hunting robot Sentinels. There isn’t any hope for the co-existance of Mutants & Humans in this world; it is a fight for survival or extinction. Here the X-Men & Brotherhood of Mutants have joined forces, but even with Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) & Magneto (Ian McKellen) together, these seasoned warriors can’t save the Mutants from the inevitable defeat. Luckily, Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) is able to project a person’s consciousness back in time, and so it’s Wolverine’s (Hugh Jackman) mission to ensure this future never happens, by sending him back to 1973, to prevent the event that triggers anti-mutant hysteria; Mystique’s (Jennifer Lawrence) murder of the Sentinel program’s creator: Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage).

The heart of the story is Charles Xavier & his path to regain his self-confidence. A decade has passed since the events of X-men: First Class, and it hasn’t been a pleasant time for Professor X. Erik “Magneto” Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender) left him crippled, his childhood friend Raven “Mystique” abandoned him, and only Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult) has stuck by him. It’s Wolverine’s time to return to favor & assist Charles Xavier through his struggles, to ensure Charles rescues Magneto from the Pentagon prison & stops Mystique. James McAvoy’s performance is excellent, his portrayal of a man whose lost everything is incredible, and he pulls you in on this wild ride—this one chance to change his future and prevent catastrophe for all mutant kind. Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique is equally entertaining. The character had always been dangerous under Singer’s direction, and she returns to top-notch form here, displaying incredible capabilities throughout the film. In this story she has adopted the path of vengeance Magneto was on in First Class, and Lawrence does a fine job of bringing Mystique’s rage and anguish to life on screen. Not to be left out, Michael Fassbender’s Magneto is more dangerous than ever. This is Magneto in his prime, he’s angry, vengeful, and so convinced of his beliefs that it’s difficult to sympathize with him—still; no villain is greater than a truly just man. His eye for an eye approach is shown to be quite understandable, and allows the audience to be just as caring about his view as we are about Xavier’s. It’s also nice to see that, while Wolverine is important to the film, this is not another “Wolverine and the X-men” movie. This is Charles Xavier’s fight, Wolverine’s just there to inspire him to make his stand.

Bryan Singer weaves an amazing spectacle, the special effects in this film are astounding, and we get to see some of the most top-notch mutant power displays ever shown in the X-men series, and we finally get to see the X-men doing what they were always meant to do, working as a team. Blink’s (Fan Bingbing) teleportation portals create stunning combat possibilities when combined with the unbridled power of Colossus (Daniel Cudmore) and the pin point marksmanship of Bishop, while Iceman (Shawn Ashmore), Sunspot (Adan Canto) & Storm (Halle Berry) create elemental fury on beautiful new levels. Magneto’s use of magnetism is merciless. However no one gets a better scene demonstrating their powers than Quicksilver (Evan Peters), accompanied by the smooth Jim Croce song “Time in a bottle.” This film makes excellent use of its fiction to create eye-popping visuals displays, stellar combat scenes, and explosive moments, without actually relying on literal explosions.

Singer has given his best X-Men movie to date! There’s amazing visuals an excellent story, and performances so great that I am truly invested in the story, and left highly anxious to see what he has in store for us in X-Men: Apocalypse

I loved it, but I want to know what happened to the wolverine whose conciseness was basically murdered (73-2023), when the wolverine we know was returned to that body.

I do wonder if Xavier would be able to successfully fill in the blanks.

I really, really liked it. Thought the story dragged a bit in the second act, and the main plot felt a bit too much like a retread, but the performances more then made up for it. McAvoy crushes it again, Fass gonna Fass (He break accent again), Page makes the most out of her screen time, Lawrence shows a great mix between First Class and Old School Raven, and this might be Jackman's more understated yet best performance. I don't know if I like it better then First Class, I just know I am happy I don't have to choose. I am going to love watching these back to back.

Movie was pretty hilarious too, while not making light of the situation. "Peter" was so funny, as was Beast and Logan.

I do wonder if Xavier would be able to successfully fill in the blanks.
He could always let him read his mind.

I've spent a day mulling over various plot points, and you know what, this is better than Avengers. Better than Dark Knight. Better than X2. From the moment the opening music played, this was always challenging the top, and I reckon it is #1. By some margin. Thank you Bryan Singer :)

That X2 theme, it felt like the 66 Spider-Man theme or the 90s X-Men cartoo theme. As soon as it hit i felt like I dunno I felt a great swell of joy

Yeah, that and the CG sequence. In that instance I realised what had been missing from the franchise :)
