Haha now personally Ill take the lotr extras on dvd over what we got in the star wars bluray. It may have been a dvd but peter jackson delivers on extras and there is supposed to be hours of extras not released which is insane considering the amount that the Extended Editions included. As far as extras go Id rank it:

Alien Anthology bluray
LOTR Extended Editions dvd
Star Wars bluray

This all being subjective of course.

Yeah, but I already own both the LOTR and SW dvd sets. Why am I getting the exact same supplements again, without even an upgrade on the disc? The SW Blu-ray gave me a lot of stuff I didn't already own, on blu-ray.

To be fair, what else could they add? Those documentaries are pretty final in every single detail you could ever possibly want to know about the films. There's nothing more to know.

Two reasons: WB had a surplus of the dvd's that they needed to get rid of and they could charge more for the set. I would have rather they not include the special features dvds at all, but its good for those that didnt already own them. As for why they didnt port them to a blu-ray, from what Ive read the supplements (docs and videos) were shot in 480p and have no HD source. The cost/benefit wasnt worth porting them to bluray. So those DVDs are the best your gonna get with those special features. Hold on to them.

First Trailer for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Will Be Attached to Non-IMAX Screenings of THE HOBBIT

Just yesterday Paramount announced that a special preview of the first nine minutes of J.J. Abrams’ sequel Star Trek Into Darkness will exclusively be playing in 3D in front of IMAX showings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14th. I surmised at the time that the first proper trailer for the follow-up would likely be unveiled in front of Jack Reacher the following weekend, but it appears we won’t have to wait that long. The first trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness will be attached to non-IMAX showings of The Hobbit.

TrekMovie broke the news of the trailer launch, and the story was subsequently tweeted by Darkness scribe Damon Lindelof, thus confirming its veracity. The trailer will not be playing in the IMAX screenings of The Hobbit and the nine-minute preview won’t be released online, so hardcore Trekkies will have to spring for two showings of The Hobbit if they want to soak in all the Star Trek goodness ASAP. Or they could just wait for the trailer to land online the following week.

The report notes that the trailer won’t just be a mash-up of footage from the prologue preview and will instead include footage from throughout the film, though I wouldn’t expect anything too revealing given that this is still a J.J. Abrams film. Moreover, the trailer is said to be a legitimate theatrical trailer and not just a short teaser. Star Trek Into Darkness opens in 3D on May 17, 2013.

So the trailers for Man of Steel, Pacific Rim and this attached to The Hobbit?

The world is not ready.

Yeah, MoS is expected to play in front of The Hobbit but we don't have a confirmation yet.

How would you rate the picture quality on the extended editions? I read there was some type of issue. I own the theatrical cuts on blu ray , but I'm considering an upgrade.

The only one with any real problems was Fellowship and you'd be glad to know that they forged a completely new transfer that eliminates most of the problems. Supposedly the other two got new transfers as well but the difference is very minimal. The transfers (especially of Fellowship) aren't close to being reference grade but now you can't say they are hugely disappointing either.

I got goosebumps just reading that.

That's good to hear. The original Fellowship transfer was a dissapointment.

Fellowship looks good, albeit green.

i saw a few complaints about a green tint but my copy was absolutely fine and looked great.

i bought tickets for just normal 3D. can't wait for dec 27th. i'm hoping by the time the second movie is released, my local cinema will have upgraded their projectors.

It is there. Jackson even admitted to adding it. It isn't super overbearing as some would have you believe, but it is noticeable in a lot of places and I am not a fan of how makes certain parts of the film look.

i compared my copy to screenshots that people posted online. the screenshots were very visibly green in the scenes they were taken from. when i watched the movie i didn't notice any green tint to the same extent as in the screenshots.

They need to start selling these in stores. I'd buy some.

Those hobbits seem pretty nonchalant considering the ****ing dragons flying around the Shire.

Ah, but you did notice it, because it is there. And if you have your equipment setup correctly you will see it, especially if you have the original DVDs to compare them to. The added overtone of green is specifically prevalent in the Shire and Rivendell.

That is not to say that a lot of screenshots aren't exaggeration, they are, though a lot of that can be from problems with the setup with the television and/or computer monitor which either produced or is viewing the screenshots.

The soundtrack's not bad, its main theme (used as The Misty Mountains' tune) sounds better to me than LotR's trilogy one. But the soundtrack overall doesn't even touch the masterpiece that was FotR's.
