I doubt it was a problem on set. Because Jackson spoke of him in a positive way. Usually if they have problems it's just "creative differences" and that's that. And he wouldn't go out of his way and put it on facebook to speak in a positive way. So it was probably something with his family.

Thanks for all your support, Peter and team have been the most wonderful and supportive team to work for and it’s with a truly sad heart that things have turned out this way. The Hobbit will go on to be as great as i’ve seen and I will miss the family and friends that i’ve here, From every disaster i’ve tried to make an opportunity. “john d rokerfeller”

That sucks. Going by the press conference and interviews, he seemed to be the most excited and enthusiastic member of the cast. I can't imagine how it must feel to watch somebody else finish your 'big break' after you've already put so much time and effort into a role.

Crap, poor Rob, this really was an amazing opportunity for someone who got his big break on british soaps.

Apparently it was a "health issue."

In any case, that really sucks for Kazinsky. My sympathies go out to the man.

Maybe John Rhys-Davies can come back as Gimli now since that's what Peter and the writers wanted to do to begin with. Davies now wants to play the part again.

They're not replacing the character, just the actor. I think Gimli is either very young or not even born at this time.

He had a really bad time once the makeup started setting his allergies off. I think he said he wouldn't want to do it again.

People on Facebook are suggested 47-year-old Bill Bailey... to play 27-year-old Aidan Turner's brother...

Dear God .

It's just wishful thinking on my part.

Oh, cool. Well I certainly wouldn't mind an appearance cuz I think JRD is pretty awesome but I dunno what Gimli's circumstances were during the Hobbit.

I didn't read that as JRD wanting to play Gimli/a dwarf again. I know he proposed going down there and giving the dwarves advice.

In any case, Gimli was 62 during The Hobbit, making him younger than Kili and Fili. JRD is too old.

Despite Jackson saying that he didn't film many scenes with the dwarves, but I'm sure that there are some.

If so, could Jackson keep the footage with Ryan as Fili where he's in the background or his non-speaking shots? I just can't see them going back to reshoot certain scenes with the dwarves; it would be a waste of time.

Kinda like how in 'V for Vedetta', Hugo in costume was in 3/4 of the film while 1/4 was still the original actor.

Could be a simple matter of cutting Kazinsky out and putting the replacement in digitally. Or, as you suggest, if Fili's in the background then they may just leave it alone. Either way, I doubt we'll actually see Kazinsky in the finished product. Any Fili close-ups will undoubtedly be reshot.

It makes sense that they'd be filming the bulk of Bilbo's scenes first, though - what with Freeman returning to the UK from May to September. That's 4-5 solid months without the principal actor.

I wonder what scene they're using with Marin without the dwarves? His Smaug scenes perhaps his Smaug scenes?

Luckily Ryan dropped outbid 'the film early enough that it won't alter the production too much..

A bit late to the party but...

Sucks that Kazinsky have to drop out. If it was because of health issues, I hope he makes a swift recovery.

And it's good that Sir Ian Holm will return as Bilbo in The Hobbit.

Yeah it's a shame about Kazinsky. I'm sure a suitable replacement will be found soon.

And while I'm sure the role of Bard the Bowman will go to a virtually unknown actor, it hasn't stopped me thinking that Joseph Fiennes would actually be a good fit for the role after seeing him as Merlin recently - though he is a well known actor...

Hopefully this will settle the 48 fps issue.

Your comments on 48 fps

http://www.facebook.com/notes/peter-jackson/your-comments-on-48-fps/10150235459531558

The news about us filming The Hobbit at 48 frames per second generated a lot of comments. Of course, it's impossible to show you what 48 fps actually looks like outside of a movie cinema, but there were several interesting and insightful questions raised.

We will be completing a "normal" 24 frames per second version—in both digital and 35mm film prints. If we are able to get the Hobbit projected at 48 fps in selected cinemas, there will still be normal-looking 24 fps versions available in cinemas everywhere.

Converting a film shot at 48 fps down to 24 fps is not a hugely difficult process, but it requires testing to achieve the best results. Some of this involves digital processes during post-production. We are also shooting the film a slightly different way, which is a question several of you asked. Normally you shoot a movie with a 180-degree shutter angle. Changing the shutter angle affects the amount of motion blur captured during movement. Reducing the shutter angle gives you the stroby (or jerky) "Saving Private Ryan" look.

However, we're going the other way, shooting at 48 fps with a 270 degree shutter angle. This gives the 48 fps a lovely silky look, and creates a very pleasing look at 24 fps as well. In fact, our DP, Andrew Lesnie, and I prefer the look of 24 fps when it comes from a 48 fps master.

More soon ....

Cheers,

Peter J

Since Fili has to be recast, I'm just wondering how last minute was Viggo's casting when nabbed the Aragorn role from Stuart Townsend? Did they have to reshoot some scenes again with Viggo?

They were a week or two into filming when Townsend got replaced.

Yep. I believe Mortensen was in New Zealand three days after receiving the call.

I imagine we'll have our new Fili by the end of next week.

Hopefully this actor has a son to get him to do it.

Really though, I'd like to see Townsend's shot stuff. It's probably destroyed though.

To my knowledge, he never did. Everything shot up to that point had been just the four hobbits. At least, that's what they said in the FoTR Appendices.

What, I'm confused. Viggo wasn't playing Aragorn originally?
