Old MCU Fantastic Four Discussion Thread

FF has almost certainly been the most talked about topic that hasn't had its own forum over the past 3 years, but I can wait until we have an announcement of an actual film. This thread is fairly active, but it's not so active that it needs to be broken up into sub-topics... yet.
I think there would be a lot more F4 traffic and most of us are posting less than we would because we are constrained to one thread. Same goes for MCU X-Men.

It seems like they could put an MCU X-Men sub-forum in the X-Men forum.

I’d love it but I think the preference seems to be to wait till something’s announced before doing it, and then to keep the forum a while even if the film is pulled.

 I would definitely like to see a space theme. I think a hard-suit might be too bulky and impractical for everyday use, but maybe like the suits you posted with the hard-parts removed.

Yeah I definitely want them to have a futuristic look more than traditional superhero look. Mass effect is a good design choice as you mentioned before

Well technically there is one and it’s called the xmen sequels board

That’s exactly it. Which does my mind in because if they suddenly make an announcement I want to be able to light the boards up haha

You'd think. But then why is there a Green Lantern forum? That is puzzling. There's not even a film in active development whatsoever. And there hasn't been one since the Ryan Reynolds effort.

I think they go off initial slate announcements, regardless of what happens after, but then keep old forums around for years after they've gone quiet. To be fair if there had been no Disney Fox deal then all the MCU-type talk would just be happening in the same old X-forums even without any actively announced films.

For those who are familiar with the comics. What runs do you think should be used as inspiration for a FF film?

For me it's:

Lee/Kirby (of course) - especially for used as inspiration for the visuals
Hickman - For the high sci-fi element
Waid - For the family dynamic

Below are the runs I think are needed to get the characters right, the runs that you'd give the actors to flip through:

Reed - Simonson, Byrne
Sue - Roberto Aguirre Sacasa (Marvel knights 4), Byrne
Ben - Byrne, Dan Slott (Thing solo), Zdarsky (Marvel 2-in-One 2017)
Johnny - Dan Slott (Spider-Man and Human Torch mini), Zdarsky (Marvel 2-in-One 2017)

Plus the books I mentioned earlier for everyone, but not Lee/kirby for Sue.

I definitely want to see that Kirby aesthetic in play, especially when they inevitably enter the Negative Zone. I think the Future Foundation would be a good place to draw some major inspiration for what the family's role should be in the MCU at large. Plus, tying in the Negative Zone opens up lots of promise for storylines like Annihilation and Galactus. Also, SWORD should be brought in post-A4 and they would obviously play a big role.

For me it pretty much has to be the Lee kirby run. We haven’t seen that done yet properly and it’s just so glorious. Maybe some Hickman elements can be incorporated like secret war.

Oh and I would love to see an earth evacuation scene from the millar and hitch run. But it should mostly be kirby/lee

Yeah, I think primarily Kirby/Lee. As one example of a key thing that has changed since Kirby, I probably would make Ben a little bigger, but I would keep the Kirby look while making him bigger.

And most things over the past 55 years are like that. By the end of the Kirby run, he had the FF looking like the FF and most artists after that only did relatively minor refinements.

I would make a point of really avoiding the goody, off the wall things - like Ultimate FF, Zombies, etc., but I think 90% of what we've seen over the past 55 years is pretty consistent and usable in some form with the first 100 issues being the key, defining ones.

The thing that shouldn't be used from the Lee/Kirby run is Sue. Look at a more modern run for her and Johnny.

Hickman's should be looked at as well for a more modern take.

I don’t mind vapid celebrity Johnny. But yeah sue is going to need some retooling. And to be honest in later runs she was a lot more three dimensional. I mean if it’s going to be called fantastic four they all have to be fantastic.

There’s actually a lot of good potential for beefing up the women characters, sue, Alicia, Medusa, crystal, Roberta... just takes some courage

I think the real courage would be making a female character who's not too bright. You just can't do that. They can make Scott Lang into a Doofus, but I couldn't imagine Marvel doing that with a female character.

Well you could. They've had films like Legally Blonde before.

He tried to slap her when he thought she was French.

Then when it turned out she wasn't, he said "mon dieu!"

For some reason, Amazon have now sent me DVD recommendations for Slap Her, She's French!

Haha, they’ve been following your posts.

Well I think Google probably logs info and displays recommendations from online stores like Amazon.

But also I think Google can use phones like a bug and send you recommendations. There was one time a few months ago when I never typed a particular phrase into Google whatsoever, but then I started receiving recommendations for tiles from the very tile shop someone else had mentioned several times. So I think Google or someone else uses phones to eavesdrop on conversations.

'Ant-Man' Director Peyton Reed Comments on MCU Fantastic Four

"Well, listen: as a fan, I certainly find that intriguing, because in the comics realm, the Fantastic Four are the crown jewels of the Marvel Universe," Reed shared with ComicBook.com. "They are the first family of Marvel. I think there is a version of Fantastic Four that has yet to be rendered in the movies that would really, really excite me, and I certainly think there are at least six different ways to introduce Fantastic Four into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a really satisfying way."

"I haven't really thought about it that much, honestly, because who knows about these mergers?" Reed admitted. "I really, as a human being, I don't know how long these types of mergers take, and when that stuff is practical, so I've really been just focused on the Ant-Man stuff — but I love the idea."

I appreciate Mr. Reed’s passion for the FF but for myself he’s one of least interesting directors in the MCU. At best he’s only adequate. I prefer someone else.

Though perhaps someone with the last name ‘Reed’ is just as fated to direct the Fantastic Four as someone with the last name ‘Webb’ was to helm Spidey. :funny:

Not really, it’s not like we’ve never seen a blonde bimbo on screen before. Plus Darcy arguably was a doofus character even though she was scientifically literate

Cast Kristen Wiig ala Bridesmaids

Love her! They could do worse than her

I mean, not your point, but Reese Witherspoon would be the perfect Sue.

She really would, what a shame she has a bias against comic book films. She’s pretty much what I want though. Someone who could play a kickass mum with nuance. Not a supermum or 1950s housewife

Bias? I don’t follow her much but has she ever called out the genre or what?

15 Actors Who Will NEVER Star In A Superhero Movie

There are a lot of really, really, really big movies about robots and things – and there’s not a part for a 34-year-old woman in a robot movie. I’ve never done the superhero movie. That doesn’t interest me too much,” said the actress.

That’s fair enough. Different horses for different courses. I suppose if someone came up with a decent script maybe she would be tempted. Or maybe it’s easier to play a superhero now her kids are a bit older
