No no, like it won’t be but borrowing from that aesthetic would be fun. Kind of that “dream big, dream of a great future” type ideology is what would make an FF movie fun

A modern setting with 60s influences would definitely be really cool and make the film stand out if done right.

Still think setting a MCU FF film in the 60s is the wrong decision.
No one has said that it should be set in the 1960's in this convo. What I mean is similar to what the Clooney Ocean's 11 did in evoking the cool elan of the Sinatra original.

From my How Would You Do It? thread:

https://forums.superherohype.com/threads/comic-book-film-adaptations-how-would-you-do-it.527643/

First up, I would place them into the MCU, no doubt but I honestly think the MCU connection is the least important aspect. The franchise could work as either a film or a streaming series though reasonably speaking a show would require an incredibly high budget. Let's start off with tone.

Tone:

I see the tone as being a mix of the nonchalance cool of OCEAN'S 11 mixed with the high tech tales of exploration one had on Star Trek: The Next Generation. The characters are all witty banter and creative solutions that take on situations one would expect from a group tackling all sorts of scientific mysteries and attempting to expand the horizon of knowledge.
I would go for background music that alternates between a big brassy swing sound like Sinatra in the early 60's and a more subdued techno inspired one. Think half the time it's Henry Mancini or Lalo Schifrin and the other half it's Daft Punk. Above all the connection between the main characters needs to be front and center. This is a "family". There is a deep connection between all of them. Now, that doesn't somehow preclude conflict, drama and personality clashes. If anything it guarantees it! That said that element cannot come off as forced or unearned. Ben's resentments and depression, Reed's guilt, Johnny's impulsive flippancy and Sue caught in the middle of it all could be done in a way that is feels very manufactured. This is something even the comics often stumble with. I would show that each character has a bond with the other three in ways that are unique and understandable despite the out there circumstances they always find themselves in.

Based out of Manhattan the team's headquarters of the Baxter building is more than just a place to hang their hats. It is the central hub for cutting edge theoretical research, which cover particle physics, nano tech, artificial intelligence, genetics, and astrophysics, except that it's not all just theoretical. At any time of the average work week great minds of science, politics and celebrity can be found coming and going from the ground level entrances. Of course that's when the FF want people to know they have guests. And guests aplenty would be an element I would have. Real life celebs, politicians and scientists along with the FF's fictional alums like Hank Pym and Tony Stark would always be around conferring with Reed and the team. I think the team needs to be seen as "cool" and celebrity pop ins would add to that. People come and go to get the team's help or assist them with something but Reed is also smart enough to harness another form of power the team possesses to do good. The power of celebrity and wealth. To that end the Fantastic Four Futures Foundation is the name under which the team operates it's charitable and philanthropic enterprises.

None of that implies being a 60's period piece.

Yeah. When I think of inspirations for reed I think of Sam Neil’s character in The Dish

Obviously they won’t be able to use the pipe though!

Well who's to say Reed doesn't get some help with scientific "inspiration" from Brother Weed?

This reminds me of ol' Walter Bishop from 'Fringe' doing all those mind-expanding drugs in the 70's to help him come up with all that crazy super-science throughout the show. He was very big on LSD. I don't know if it should be a main fixture for a guy like Reed, but I imagine he would be fairly pro-drug use if the topic ever came up.

But yeah, pipe smoking. I bet Reed would be down for that.

You know, the above tweet is very interesting because the closest person I’ve ever seen look the closest to Kirby’s mr fantastic is Rick Yune

Well, not that I’m endorsing anything but the devil’s lettuce has inspired many works of art and great leaps forward. Wouldnt surprise me if reed was a fan of Cheech and Chong movies

Marvel are very against smoking. Quesada hates it because he blames it for the death of his dad and Disney won’t want to tarnish their brand. That’s why fury and wolverine gave up the smokes

Hey what sort of music score should the MCU FF have? I would be sad if it was just standard operatic. The incredibles already did a bombastic Saturday morning cartoon type score. Maybe they could go for something 60s inspired, almost dusty springfield inspired.
Maybe do a Guardians of the Galaxy, but with 60s music instead of 70s? It could be Johnny Storm's record collection.

Would Johnny listen to ‘60s music though? I thought he would be all pop, wouldn’t be able to stomach anything older than 90s. It would be fun to hear what each character would like actually.

Oh by the way, I was thinking in terms of style I want it more in the flavour of The Orville rather than the most recent Star Trek series. I hope they don’t get too carried away with the science jargon and Poe faces

I've always thought that the music should also take inspiration from the Mass Effect video games, especially the first game. The music enhanced the sci-fi and exploration feel of the games and it should be the same for the films.

 I don't know his acting, but he has a look that works. I hate the idea of: "Let's target this race, or let's target that race." just find someone who has the generally right look, personality and acting ability and go from there.

Oh my gosh did you know I am obsessed with mass effect? I wouldn’t hate that at all. Obviously it would have to be less militaristic but the general idea would be incredible.

It’s a shame now that we have an eternals board and a black widow board that we can’t have an FF board again. I get it though, the policy is we wait for at least some creatives to become attached

Mass Effect is one of my favorite franchises, I replay it way too often. I think an FF film could learn a lot from the Mass Effect and other sci-fi franchises.

My dream Fantastic Four film is a celebration of the sci-fi genre and family. Putting exploring the unknown at the forefront of it all.

I just want Johnny Storm to be around the same age as Peter. Like maybe he can sneak aboard the ship that Reed & Sue take to space.

Emily Blunt possibly playing Sue is growing on me. If the MCU are going for Sue being the real '"power behind the throne" then Emily would be great. Plus she's a really strong actress and that's what this franchise needs, strong acting.

Where are my posts? This site still has bugs to fix.

Same. Part of what makes the team work is that is much younger than the others. He's the immature kid brother that has a lot to learn and flies off into danger without thinking. Plus the dynamic he has with Peter needs to be in the MCU. They would be the only teen superheroes in the MCU and can relate to each other.

He would if he lives in/comes from the 60s.

What do you all think of Eddie Redmayne as Reed? Just watching the new Fantastic Beasts 2 trailer and I can totally see him as Reed.

Redmayne is not my choice for Reed, but some of his Newt portrayal should be used as inspiration for MCU Reed. Like the urge to settle things peacefully and reluctance to deal with things violently, it contrasts well with Ben and Johnny's more punch first ask questions later personalities. It will also show how dire a situation is when Reed does start fighting.

Also the awe and wonder Newt shows is important for Reed to have too. He should show pure joy at discovering new things and going to new places, in fact all of the team should share that trait. Reed just has it the most.

I've basically settled on to me wanting it set in the 60's mostly with:

Joseph-Gordon Levitt as Reed
Emily Blunt as Sue
Joel Kinnaman as Ben
Dacre Montgomery as Reed
Oscar Isaac as Victor

Redmayne would probably make a better Doom than a Reed. My two cents.

I know I’ve had a few of my posts disappear too. Major bummer. I think it was only for posts made over one night and probably won’t happen again

Like his character in Jupiter ascending?
