I didnt know Poe was gonna die at first. I'm happy they didnt kill him off. I'm looking forward to seeing where his character will go, because i think he has some catching up to do in terms of character development.
He really did not need a lot known about him in TFA. The main focus was on Rey/Finn/Kylo, that truly was the new trio. But Poe was so magnetic, and he became likable right away, they gave enough for TFA, but just like all the other characters I'm sure we will go deeper into each character as the trilogy goes on.
But Poe is just so likable, in TFA he really did not need a lot for that film. It will be interesting to see where he goes in VIII.
I wouldn't say he was a nothing character. If he had died as originally planned he would've still had a lot of bearing on Finn's character. Poe is like the model of a Resistance good guy that Finn tries to emulate throughout the story, hence him wearing his jacket.
Isaac has a ton of charisma. He makes Poe feel like a larger character, even though Rey/Kylo/Finn are the new trio. I'm fine with what he got last time around.
I think it's great the Oscar got to audition with Daisy too, considering they had no scenes together in the final cut (there's a scene in the novelization at the end at the Resistance Base.)
Luke & Leia:
Leia: Aren't you a little short for a storm trooper?
Luke:[removes his helmet] I'm Luke Skywalker. I'm here to rescue you!
Leia: You're who?
Luke and Han:
[Han bragging about the quality and worth of his ship ans skills...]
Luke: We could almost buy our own ship for that!
Han: But who's gonna fly it, kid? You?
Luke: You bet I could! I'm not such a bad pilot myself.
And finally Han & Leia:
Han: Can't get out that way...
Leia : Looks like you've managed to cut off our only escape route.
Han: [sarcastically] Maybe you'd like it back in your cell, your highness.
The first meetings of Luke, Han & Leia, are so incredibly memorable, quickly setting up their dynamic, defining how their characters interact, to their arcs going forward.
How important is that?
Two of the new trio of heroes Poe and Rey don't have that, we never saw them meet on film, it happened off camera?
So how do people want their actual first on film meeting to play out?
- Just play it as if they already met, and move on? Does not seeing their first meeting rob them of the impact of that moment though?
- Have their off camera first meeting just be referenced in their dialogue? "Hi we already met before ...remember" That seems really weak.
- Recreate and elaborate on their first meeting (see image bellow) and insert as a flash back so we can see it? Also seems like a bad idea.
- Throw it out entirely, pretend like it never happened, and create a new actual real first meeting for ep. VIII?
(yet they were standing together in the map room, could they have never met there?)
Just wanted to add that I definitely enjoyed Oscar's performance and portrayal of Poe Dameron in Episode 7.
I just hope that they don't do anything dumb with the continuation of his story like setting up a love triangle between him, Rey, and Finn...or do anything else that might be considered jumping the shark for his character.
I feel like there's a lot of possibility for the character going forward right now.
That's the problem with having EP 8 take place right after EP 7. There will be little character growth. Everyone will be in the same state as when we last saw them….
Didn't the director say all the characters were going to be challenged in VIII? I'm guessing they aren't going to get an actor of Isaac's caliber and then have him just stay a grinning space jockey for the whole saga. I imagine Isaac wouldn't be too interested in playing a character who didn't change or grow.
There will be growth because everything that's already happened in TFA is about to get worse in EP 8.
Poe's relationship will be his ultimate loyalty to democracy and justice, everything the Resistance is fighting for (and everything the Republic wants but unfortunately on their own greedy terms). The closest thing to a "romance" with Poe will be his bromance with Finn (unless Rian goes really weird and creates a love triangle between Poe, Finn, and BB-8 LMAO ).
Also, we will see Kylo Ren return to Snoke, both enraged and shameful for being beaten by Rey, the destruction of Starkiller Base, and having JUST murdered his father. I hope Rian gives Kylo (and Snoke) some meat to delve into.
I think Poe and some of the other character that were introduced in Force Awakens will have much bigger rolls in the next Episodes such as Captain Phasma. Poe won't be a love interest or Force sensitive person, but I am sure will have an important part in upcoming movies.
With Ford out, his character will maintain the down to earth sarcastic, quick wit, and charm needed in the face of overwhelming odds, and opposite extraordinary characters and arcs which are bigger than life.
I'm fine with Rey being the one, not everyone needs to be a Jedi (or Jedi in training) in Star Wars, Han, Lando, and Leia(for the most as Rebel Princess) were all great characters without it!
They've well established Rey being the start of a new gen, that's her personal arc, and it's great!
Poe and Finn should likewise pursue their own goals, slay their own demons , have their own personal stories and evolution.
Not everyone needs to end posed with a lightsaber in hand.
Rey has Kylo - classic dark vs light struggle (we know it's building to when they face again)
Finn has Phasma - freedom/choice vs order/servitude (I hope she returns to pursue him)
Does Poe need a more direct personal antagonist /opposite /nemesis?

I wonder if that can be made to be General Hux, shown personally responsible for taking out Leia (assuming that's her fate) as a retaliation for the loss of the Star Killer Base.
It could put Poe in a position to move up the ranks of the Resistance, Placing Poe in a more parallel position to Hux.
Also make the grudge between him and Hux more direct and personal.
Don't know much about General Hux's character, but with some slight retrofitting might be an interesting turn if they showed he'd been a pilot. Then (fitted with his own unique helmet and fighter) they could pit him against Poe's black X-Wing, which he could recognize as the leader of the strike-force that took out Star-killer base. Setting up a dogfight where he chooses to take on Poe himself.
LOL bit random and contrived, but instead of inventing an underling pilot nemesis for Poe whole-cloth, could something like this work?t: Or is he not the type?
Also not sure how they are playing Kylo's potentially conflicting loyalties going forward, but the tension with him and Hux is great, if Hux's next move is to personally take out Kylo's mother, it could be a huge way to push the antagonism between them too.
