Pacific Rim - Part 5

Still think James Cameron would have pushed this film into record breaking numbers.

I'll admit the special FX are fun (although the main robot looks like a combination of Master Chief from Halo and Iron Man), but how this movie got so many positive reviews is beyond me. Even more than MoS, this movie is all style and no substance.

By the way, I love how they talk up the Russian and Japanese Jagers and they go down in like 2 seconds.

5/10 for me.

this movie is all style and no substance.

What's more puzzling to me is how much of a pass this movie is getting because "that's what GDT was going for"

He was going for characters that are terribly flat? I get the cliched accents. But there is literally nothing unique, or even interesting about the characters in this movie.

I'll say it again, you replace GDT's name with Bay,Abrams, or any other director and the tune would change.

I'm glad this movie is under performing, it's been my least favorite of the summer.

The only reason I'm upset that it is under performing is I love every other film GDT has done and I am worried it will effect him getting jobs later.

I haven't seen the film yet so I can't say if I like this one yet.

What he was going for was a love note to the genre. Which he
succeeded in doing greatly.

Going by that logic if Abrams name was on it then reviews would have been even greater.

Yes it is. Seems marketing was pretty terrible there, jmc didn't even know there was an Australian jaeger. Underwhelming in the UK also. Two key markets where its not doing well.

I'm also not sure how Japan is gonna take the movie, will they accept something that they love being done by Hollywood? Also WWZ gets released the same time around it.

I think the fact that the leading lady is Japanese might help, but having the Japanese jaeger went down so quickly in the movie might not.

what makes the fanboys always angry is when they dont like a movie but critics or other fanboys do.

we all need to be right. thats what this is all about. the same with the BO. why are superman fans so invested in the BO? why does MOS need to make 300 domestic? because they can run around the niternet community screaming MOS is a good movie because it made 300 domestic.

Lol, you hardly even see the Japanese one in the movie. Crimson Typhoon is Chinese.

for all the talk of the international scene saving the world and not the typical american heroe(s), sucks the other such jaegers went down the way they did in the time they did.

At the very least they should have had him switch jaegers in the end.

So, I said this in the other Godzilla thread

They should make animated films of a Pacific Rim/Godzilla crossover and PR sequels if we dont get a live action one

It's not going to make 300mil domestically and yet it's still a hit, unlike Pacific Rim. That doesn't make Pacific Rim a bad or good movie, it's just not a hit. Mos's detractors and over zealous fans are the only ones calling it a failure at the box office.

I like Del Toro and I wish him success but I can't wish Rim success because I didn't like it. That doesn't mean I'm necessarily wishing it failure but I don't wish it success. Del Toro is a good director and will survive Pacific Rim's disappointing at the box office.

Anyone who thinks that he is finished directing big budget movies because of this don't know how hollywood works. I suspect Del Toro's next big budget film will be based on something semi popular though. Eventhough I dislike the film I do appreciate that he got something made that wasn't based on a comicbook or cereal box.

Do they even have any reason to?

uh hell yeah

Of course it would it cool but financially speaking Legendary can just wash their hands of Pacific Rim and and just focus on Godzilla.

Putting Godzilla in would give Pacific Rim a big named star for a sequel, animated or not? Godzilla has fought stupider things before and I must admit it would at least look cool.

No other real reason. One big downside though is the Godzilla sequels you'd expect Jaegers to appear as it would be a linked universe.

after seeing Prim, can anyone explain why one should be excited for Godzilla, seems like a less ambitious take on the material in a way.

I was never excited about Godzilla and Pacific Rim only makes me less excited. I would like a response to your question though.

I'm still excited for Godzilla because I love the character. I have since I was six.... brand loyalty really.

We'd probably have to wait 10 to 15 and Cameron to build a life size Gypsie Danger prop

But it would be AMAZING and the first movie to make 500 million over the weekend

I don't think people mind the standard cliches and archetypes of the characters so much as the dialogue and performances/delivery of dialogue.

Hmmm yeah definitely this. Some line deliveries were bad, two bits that really stick out for me were "Lets do this, together!" something really stuck out from that line it just didn't fit nor did it really need "together" plus the way Hunnam delivered it... he sounded bored :D

Another was a scene with Perlman and Day, they were standing two foot apart, Perlman was talking normally but Charlie Day was basically yelling.

Elba got it perfect with the Apocalypse speech, if you are doing moments like that you have to go for it.

Going to see this tonight finally. Looking forward to it.

Charlie Day was pretty much Rick Moranis, as most reviews mentioned. Just manic as hell.
