Pacific Rim - Part 6

Am I the only one who wants to see the next movie open with the Kaiju fighting dinosaurs? They mentioned having tried it before in the movie and they didn't like the planet til we ****ed it up.

It would be cool to see, seeing as the aliens created them as the original Kaiju, but the Kaiju in PR were much bigger and threatening than a dinosaur could be IMO.

GDT mentioned that we will see Kaiju/Jaeger hybrids in the sequel (if it happens), I think that sounds much more interesting.

The first film feels like a complete story, so I honestly can't think of where to go with it.

^It does feel like a complete story, which I am glad of, but I am sure they have a story in mind for the sequel. The aliens will return somehow, and the idea GDT mentioned of Kaiju/Jaeger hybrids sounds great.

I really hope we get a sequel so we can see these things.

Am I the only one who isn't too excited by the prospect of kaiju/jaeger hybrids?

I'm kinda meh about it as this is what pops in my head when I think of it.

But if it was more like this then I'm all for it.

Am I the only one who isn't too excited by the prospect of kaiju/jaeger hybrids?

I'm generally weary on the subject. I'd rather the Kaiju be covered in say...armor. Rather than be full on cyborgs. Something akin to the leviathans in The Avengers would work for me.

Same here. Giant cyborg-monsters? Not for me. No armor either. I like my monsters naked.

I would like to see more of the PR universe, but I agree with you. Cyborg hybrids aren't the most exciting, or innovative ideas to go with.

In the end I agree, I like the set up they already have. Metal vs Flesh. It would be better if they just continue to think of new ideas with the design philosophy they have already.

I personally think the hyrbid idea is pretty damn good, and would love to see the designs they come up with. If a sequel is made, they have to up the game somehow and that would be a good way to go IMO.

As much as I really like Pacific Rim and its world, I don't really care to see a sequel. My excitement for Pacific Rim as a new property had little to do with having a new property to see driven into the ground. I'd much rather similar attempts to draw on past influences to create something new, you know how things used to happen frequently instead of it being a rare occurrence.

^GDT would likely be involved though and he is just an awesome director, and good at sequels as well, both Blade II and Hellboy II were better than their predecessors IMO.

I don't think there will be a sequel, but I'd love to see this world continued in some way. I'd prefer a bluray of animated shorts like The Animatrix. And also this film gets better every rewatch for me. And to think I was disappointed the first time I saw it.

I would love to see a sequel, but the shorts idea is really great too! We could see the first kaiju attack, the first jaeger, kaijus attacking dinosaurs etc. A bunch of shorts would really let them explore the whole universe.

^For that though they could just do a prequel, which IMO would be just as promising as a sequel, as there is a lot of history in this universe we only got quick glimpses of. Same with many Jaegers and Kaiju as well.

Watched this again last night, still a hell of a fun time for me and it just looks glorious in 4K. The CGI still mainly holds up, and it's a real shame we never got a franchise out of this. Rinko Kikuchi is awesome as well.

Despite GDT's direction being missed, I did actually like the sequel. But again, shame the series never took off as it had great potential.

I've been planning a rewatch recently as a double feature with Edge of Tomorrow. Pacific Rim was probably my favorite blockbuster film of 2013. I remembering really being hyped for it. The sequel kinda sapped me of any enthusiasm for the franchise. Maybe the anime could rekindle that, but it's hard to find someone with the same level of expertise, passion, and world building as Del Toro. I can't think of anyone I'd really want to take over.

It was definitely one of my favourite 2013 movies, along with MOS. I was so glad we got a sequel, and I actually liked it more than I thought I would. But I think a more direct sequel would have been better for us fans. But oh well too late now.

watching this and MOS in 2013 back to back in theaters was so awesome.
i had such high hopes for both these franchises...damn.

The reason this never worked for me is because in the end it lost the humanity. Giant cgi robots and monsters that never looked real. And human characters that were paper thin. Charlie Hunnam can be good in the right project but here he was a cartoon and the Japanese actress was awful. I’m glad Guillermo del Toro moved on from this to much better fare like Shape of Water.

Totally agree, I was so excited for the sequels to both. And I liked the sequels to both, especially the UC of BvS, but it’s a damn shame where both franchises ended up.

Yeah I also wish this would have become a much bigger franchise than it did. Really enjoyed the first one, especially the world building which I still absolutely love. GDT just brings so much imagination and creativity to his stuff and if you give him a big enough budget he almost always seems to deliver IMO. Sure the characters weren't the strongest, but that honestly never bothered me because I was so engaged by just being in this world. Wasn't a big of the sequel though, but I'd love it if they found a way to continue this franchise in the anime format. A anime Netflix series could pretty great and has a lot of potential IMO.

Dude, your post inspired me to watch this and damn, that was a blast. I thought this was boring last time I watched it. I preferred the Bayformers lite sequel more than this one but f**king hell this movie is awesome. I don't know why it didn't work before but pretty much everything lined up for me this time.

Hunnam was good, not great but he gets the job done as the lead. I re-watched Jurassic World yesterday and I had similar feelings towards Owen (Pratt's character) that he wasn't charismatic enough to carry the movie. But I think I have changed my mind on both. They made me care and that's all that matters.

I also thought Elba's Marshall was not up-to the mark before but again his was another role which I misjudged.

Rinko Kikuchi was really very good too. The research team duo of Charlie Day and the other guy (his name escapes me) were fun and Perlman's Chau was hilarious.

The action was outstanding. The whole scene at the Hong Kong coast line where Striker Eureka, Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon gets their ass handed to them by Otachi & Leatherback and then Gipsy Danger outmaneuvers is brilliant. The use of whole ships, freight trucks as melee weapons was so impressive. One if the best kaiju fights ever!

I'm actually a teeny bit disappointed that Crismson Typhoon and Cherno Alpha didn't get to show their cool features and take down kaijus.

It cannot be overstated how well Del Toro uses atmospheric elements to accentuate the fight. The persistent rain, the darkness and the ripples of rain/ocean water streaming out of their bodies.

Try to imagine the same scenes in dry daylight and they seem duller to say the least.
