Pacific Rim - Part 3

My only issue with PR is its premise. How did the world get to the point that the only viable option to fight giant monsters is giant robots? Robots that (by the footage shown) cause just as much destruction to the cities they're defending as the monsters themselves. Sounds like the response a 10 year old would come up with faced with a hypothetical problem. I don't watch anime so I'm not familiar with how that plausibility is usually addressed. But if that's explained well enough during the course of the movie then I'll be sold.

I feel like that is the premise so it should be accepted. If it starts breaking its own rules than that's another story.

Most anime that deals with such fantastical things just is, you usually roll with it or don't.

Well I hope not because it's too silly a premise for me to accept for face value. If there's no explanation ("we've tried everything, etc, etc") I don't understand why any government would take the suggestion "GIANT ROBOTS! THAT'S THE ANSWER!" seriously.

Well I believe they tried bombing them but took hours to take one down, might be the one we seen attacking San Francisco or the dead one that is being transported on the carrier. Also with a Jaeger they can engage them in the water, where they first pop up, before they can reach land. Or at least they try to prevent them from reaching the city.

Hm, here are the in-universe reasons why giant mecha ended up being a good solution.

1. Kaiju are incredibly hard to kill with standard weapons. It took several days to kill the first one, which ended up being nuked. So battles are prolonged, messy, and cause lots of destruction.

2. Kaiju leak incredibly toxic blood that ruins absolutely everything it comes into contact with. This is why bullets, bombs, and missiles are ill-advised. You're gonna spread that stuff eveywhere.

3. Jaegers are used as giant road blocks, being deployed before Kaiju make landfall. Jaegers are deployed, smash kaiju to pieces, or use FREAKIN LAZERS, and the job is done.

Given the nature of the kaiju, giant mecha is the best possible solution.

This is a can of worms, but...I would think all the money they invested in the jaeger proram could have been put into another weapon capable of stopping the kaiju. I mean robots aren't exactly the simplest solution. They are bipedal with varying centers of gravity and have possibly millions of moving parts and in a bad situation the robot itself could fall over and kill thousands. Its just not practical. Invent a bomb that disentegrates them, or some type of immobilizer or killing device that doesn't spill blood.

This being said tho, this is a damn movie and it has mechs versus kaiju. I'm not gonna argue with the awesomness of that concept.

Most fights seem to take place on the coastline. The "mechs" themselves don't do that much damage because they usually keep the kaiju from even getting to shore.

Fighting on land is when **** is going bad. Like the Battle of HK.

I personally don't have a problem with the films robot premise but I gotta say that with that much money and creativity there are probably other options that are more rational and practical. Most of which would focus on the root of the problem, where they emerge from.

And a solution with less collateral damage. I mean at one point the jaeger is dragging an oil tanker down a highway destroying the boat, the highway, and the cars and everything else on that road. Then it smashes the boat into the kaijus head and bits of steel from the boat fall to the ground and go flying. Its cool and gonna be fun, but if you examine this films its gonna come apart where logic is concerned.

To be fair. That doesn't seem like typical confrontation between a Jaeger and Kaiju.

Huge pay loads of neurotoxin, hemotoxin, or just anti coagulant, or some mix of all three. Might be worth a try, Giant harpoon with an insane amount of wattage...

all inserted near the base of the skull.

Peharps pour these same jeager resources into nano tech or even mosquito sized tech and do what mosquito's do but on a very large scale.
I save give that stuff a try, if it fails then maybe build the megazords lol.

I'm okay with absurd premises as long as a movie sells me on it. I talk about box office and **** and will continue to but at the end of the day if I love the film I will be happy, no matter if it tanks at the box office or not. I don't judge a movie's quality on it's box office one way or another. Never have and never will.

Which is why it's a movie.

I found Marvin's post to be funny and insightful but I do believe he is slightly overthinking the premise.

Its premise is the best part of this movie. It's huge robots vs huge monsters

Yeah, questioning that is baffling, in the comic book, they just show the creator of the Jaeger program watching his son playing with his toys: a monster and a robot, making them fight, that's when he goes "EUREKA !" and decides to launch the Jaeger program.

You find this out, but I'm not sure it's overly apparent, but the Jaegers are used in a more of a "defensive line" than an all out attack force. They usually take up regions/patrols when under attack.

I think it's basically the same handwave most mecha anime gives.....it's just cool to watch. Granted if Del Toro wasn't doing it we probably would question some of the plot holes, but...it is what it is.

Those sound just as crazy as a giant robot TBH.

Just back from my showing and it was awesome. My favourite film of the year so far, and I enjoyed Star Trek and Man of Steel. Even the 3D was good and I don't usually like it. Del Torro, you beautiful bastard. Love this film.

So normal folks will like it, not just people like us?

If they ever actually get a chance to see it.

Judging by tracking, this'll be a blu-ray discovery for most normal people.
