Pacific Rim - Part 5

Agreed 100%. I normally agree with Richard Roeper, so when he gave this a positive review, I thought, "well maybe it's decent after all."

I'll give them credit for some great special effects, but this movie makes Independence Day look like a masterpiece.

Idris Elba is a good actor, but you can tell he was straining, because there was absolutely nothing in this script.

I just got back from my viewing. I actually did a double-header, saw The Conjuring first ......... and did not like either film.

You're absolutely right, this script gave them nothing. I started checking out nearly halfway thru the movie like I did MoS. Some of the dialogue and plot points I was being fed were pure cornball. I wanted to pummel the two scientists for getting on my nerves the entire time. I like Charlie Day in movies such as "Horrible Bosses" and "Going the Distance" but he was unbearable in this ..... and the Kaiju's mind meld I just laughed at.

One of my friends walked out before the 3rd act because he couldn't take it anymore. The rest of us four just kept looking at each other like "is this really happening???" .... Oh and Mako, dear lord. Who was responsible for that casting? Between her and Faura in MoS I think I've had my share of horrible actresses struggling to blurt bad lines behind their accents. About the only thing great her character had to offer was the mind meld scene we get of her as a child. That kid was the best actor in the entire film.

Obviously the FX were topnotch, yet at times hard to make out during fight scenes. The Honk Kong set kind've reminded me so much of Blade Runner.

Really disappointed in this after how badly I wanted to see it. Another film where big money is spent on CGI and the script became last on the list of priorities. I'm all about having fun at a movie, but I have my limits with how much I have to suspend my intelligence. I mean this movie claims dinosaurs were the first time we encountered Kaiju's.

Btw, anyone care to describe the end-credit scene. We didn't stay. Just wanted to GTFO of there.

I don't understand walking out of movies, like really at all. That's just bizarre.

So Rinko Kikuchi was bad because she had an accent?

No. Her lines were terrible and she was a bad actress (perhaps it's because she was forced to speak english throughout most of the film). The forced emotionality of her character became hard to deal with as her accent got thicker.

If you're irritated by what you're watching and felt like you wasted your money ..... what's hard to understand about that?

Because the acting of walking out is what renders it a waste of money?

Also even if you didn't like the movie, what is there about it that is that repulsive or offensive to actually drive one out of the theater?

Why form an opinion of half of a movie when you already paid to see the whole thing? Why wait in the lobby when the rest of your party is watching the rest of the film?

Again that is just bizarre.

I guess we disagree on that. Despite having to speak in English I still felt the emotion she got across was genuine.

I see people online already referring to it as Pacific ******. :o
So they were afraid and nervous of what they were about to experience, but ended up being titilated and semi-aroused. :hmm

Also its not as if she was trying to do an American accent and was slipping out of it...

Sidenote: James McAvoy is really bad about that kind of thing. I hate it when he has to play Americans.

Did you read what I wrote? He walked out after 2/3'rd of it, NOT half. It was right before they finally set out to destroy the breach.

And who said he waited in the lobby? You do know that other people besides yourself own a car and know how to drive themselves home right?

Absolutely not bizarre. If the movie was torturing you like it clearly was him, then I don't blame him. The entire time I listened to him moan like he was getting his teeth worked on. Him staying to watch where they set out to destroy the breach wouldn't have made him feel any better.

I never said anything about slipping in and out of it. Her lines were cringe-worthy a lot of the time and either she's a terrible actress or she's a terrible actress when forced to primarily speak english.

I walked out of Now You See Me. Time is more important than money for a ticket.*

*I didn't pay for my ticket, my sister did but she instigated the walkout so my comment still stands.

I generally don't walk out of movies on principle. Because if its that bad I wouldn't feel right ripping it apart unless I saw the whole thing. Who knows maybe the movie can redeem itself somewhat at the end, highly unlikely but still.

Closest I ever came was Transformers 2 and Origins.

I don't think i've ever walked out of a movie? Even if i'm not enjoying it i just can't bring myself to know i've definitely wasted my money.

I almost feel like I have to at least see it through.

On a side-note I am surprised someone would walk out on PR? It may not be the best movie but the visuals alone should more than make-up for any of its flaws. There are far worst more walk-out deserving movies i've seen than this.

I really wanted to see that one, couldn't get anyone to go with me, and just never ended up going at all.

^Maybe you'd like it, a lot of people seemed to, my sister and I just weren't among that crowd. And I didn't really fully rate Now You See Me because I didn't watch all of it. I guess it gets a sorta 1/10 because it sucked too much to finish it. I mean Jesse Eisenberg's hair was awesome and he looked kinda cute.

I won't link due to cursing but Red Letter Media's Half In the Bag reviewed the film. It is entertaining and I'd say fair.

2/3 or not you're still missing out on major chunks of the rising action and climax of the story. I just find it to be kind of ridiculous. Especially in a social setting.

What exactly was so torturous about this film specifically?

I've never walked out of a movie. And I saw both the Scorpion King and Blade Trinity in theaters. There is apparently no level of "bad" that will motivate me to physically get up and walk out before the credits start rolling, lol.

Can we stop with the ridiculous notion that Pacific Rim is the next Star Wars? No matter how you felt about Star Wars or Pacific Rim, Star Wars was a box phenomenon when it came out. It was almost instantly beloved by young and old alike. Pacific Rim isn't even the next Matrix let alone Star Wars.

It's fine to love the film and like it more than Star Wars (I'm not a huge Star Wars fan myself) but the comparison is just outrageous. It just makes me take it's fanbase less seriously when the fanbase says things like that.

Do you think the BO of PR will bring forward the Blu ray release by a month (at least)?

It certainly isn't 'Star Wars' in any context.

However if you're speaking purely in terms of world building and such that's really the only metric in which they are at all comparable and even then Pacific Rim loses out. The Matrix is certainly film I'd compare it to in that regard, in that the world it builds is centered around a pretty basic conflict. Both movies are heavily rooted in sci-fi and anime tropes etc.

While I'd say Pacific Rim's world building is about on par in depth with the first Matrix film its effects won't be as far reaching. Pacific Rim won't be declared culturally significant by the Libary of Congress as The Matrix and Star Wars have been.

For those who enjoy Pacific Rim they just need to enjoy it in its own right and in its own limited context. Build a fandom around if they like it so much, make it a thing instead of just talking about it as if it already is one. If single season canceleld scifi shows can sustain a fandom for a decade this film certainly can.

Nah I imagine WB will stick to their usual first week of December home video date for their releases for this weekend each year.

Who in this thread has said that?
