Pacific Rim - Part 6

I've seen Star Wars brought up in this very thread and all over the internet before the film was even released. If you haven't seen that, I don't know what to tell you. Red pretty much explains most of what I am getting at in a far less angry fashion.

You can't force a movie to be a game changer just because you like it and I feel like Pacific Rim was being forced by fanboys and fanboy bloggers to be a game changer before they even watched it.

But is it being brought up in this thread now after people have seen the movie? I understand your point if the people who loved this movie kept saying that. However, I don't see it at all unless I missed it.

i think star wars is being used as an example or world building. detailed world building.

Even then, I'd say The Matrix is a far more accurate comparison, both in scope and the specific tropes invoked.

Also if you search "Star Wars" in the last thread, which covers basically from the day after the movie came out to today, the only time Star Wars was brought up was in this current conversation and in comparisons of acting and writing quality.

The Matrix and Speed Racer are by far better comparisons than Star Wars. I don't see this great world building in Rim to begin with but I doubt that is a shocking opinion to you gentleman.

when you find a lot about the world that the movie is set in. i think its good world building.

Haha Those two Wachowski movies combined are actually the PERFECT comparison here...

Thinking about it, it is! I thought the Pacific Rim-verse had a lot of personality, in the manner of those two. Probably not as in your face as the Wachowski movies, but as textured and stylized.

Kaiju merchandizing, the Kaiju body parts black market, the death cults and churches that spring up around Kaiju bone, Jaeger pilots as rock star celebrities - all pretty cool finishing touches to a world.

re being lauded as the next Star Wars. Don't think it's held up in that esteem? Even the most ardent fans wouldn't call it a game changer. It is what it is.

Well this movie is definitely not getting a sequel. Disappointing since I really enjoyed it. But I am glad it was a pretty solid ending, and didnt try to set up a sequel so there are no unanswered story lines.

I don't think I would want to see a sequel, even though I enjoyed the first film. It just seemed like a good standalone story, like Jaws or Jurassic Park, and we saw how those sequels went.

you make a good point its just when you spend 200mill on a big bblockbuster you expect sequels the studio and the public

If it was a fully animated cartoon I suspect it would have gotten a sequel. Those are like the only properties these days that can not be based on something previous that can turn into franchises.

My wife and I saw it this afternoon....we both loved it. Greta fun. Lots of action and nice effects......great way to spend a few hours.

I wasn't going to see it at first (being only intrigued by Del Toro's name, and thinking each trailer looked godawful stupid), but then I looked up stuff about it, and upon discovering some of the cast involved (Elba, Perlman) and word of mouth about the story being amazing, I decided to give it a shot last night.

I was right the first time. The action's good, but that's about it. The story is bland and too obviously predictable, as well as hole filled. Elba and Perlman are small parts, and neither do anything particularly impressive. Del Toro's influence is really only apparent in the monsters (which were pretty cool, and much more so than the human-driven robots). The movie was also set at the worst possible time for this story, since the opening set up an interesting conflict between these new giant monsters and humanity, but decided to skip all the way to the end.

I did like that the scientists ultimately saved the day, and the spectacle was huge (it helped that I sat behind two young boys in the theater, their enthusiasm was infectious), but it was something I was probably better off waiting to see as a rental.

Also, that size chart is off, either Godzilla and Clover are bigger or the Jaegers are smaller.

Where did you hear this exactly? Friends/Family? Because I loved the movie and I would never come close to saying the story is amazing.

I'd say the story is amazing. All this time I thought aliens would come from the sky , not the bottom of the ocean. Go figure.

I came back from seeing it the 2nd time still a great spectacle but I can't help but feel even more now that the film sort of peaked with the HK battle and maybe should have ended there?

The last battle underwater just seems sort of under-whelming vs the HK battle even if the stakes are supposedly higher?

I agree that the HK battle was the peak. That category 5 kaiju never really got a chance to shine.
