PlayStation Firmware Updates

Sometimes there's a clock next to a friend's name on my my list. I'm guessing that means that person has been idle for some time. Has that always been a feature though? I'm just now seeing it.

It's a timer of how long they have to live. If you go afk for so long Sony sends hitmen after you.

Actually, I believe it's that annonymous feature deal. You can push triangle on your icon in the friends section, go to status, choose not available, and it'll show you're online, but not what you're doing. It's been around for awhile. Most likely it was put in so you could keep your friends from knowing you're playing Hanna Montana online.

I needed a good laugh, so thanks :funny::up: And thanks for the info. I was always so afraid to play my Hannah Montana when all my other friends are playing Modern Warfare 2. :csad:

Not sure if this pertains to anyone here, but it looks like the newest Firmware update will take away the "Install Other OS" option from the console.

The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

  • Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
  • Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
  • Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
  • Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

When did they add a Trailers section under the Videos tab? I noticed that a few weeks ago

Did you happen to have GOW III in? I noticed it as well, but ONLY when GOW III is in the drive. You take the disk out, and that Trailers section goes away.

That's because the trailers are on the God of War III disk.

I cant remember if GoW3 was in but there were other videos that I downloaded in that section. There were some Heavy Rain clips. Hmmm, maybe its by game. I will have to take a look at it later

Yeah, GOWIII has ModNation Racers, GT5, Heavy Rain, and MAG trailers on the disc. I think a few other games did this as well.

The FW is not that surprising. After GeoHot found the exploit through the Other OS option, I knew Sony would do something to stop it. I didn't think they would make a FW just for it though. I never used it, but I know a few who have and they are a bit upset.

Yeah you are right, it is GOW3. The trailers section was absent when HR was in my PS3 but there with GoW3. I thought it wasa firmware addition I never noticed

I was far more hyped earlier on with the install other OS option than I should have been. I actually put Linux on my 80GB, and was happy with it at first, but over time...I never really used it. I thought it was awesome because it made the PS3 even better as it could do console stuff, play BR movies, oh and become a mini comp. Over time tho I realized that linux on it couldn't do 3D gaming, was slow, and was really only useful for internet browsing or dl'ing things the normal PS3 OS couldn't. However the PS3 itself has a decent enough web browser as is. Plus there's nothing you can do on the PS3 Linux that you can't do with an older comp. In the end it just ended up taking up 10 extra GB's of space I couldn't touch without a reformat, so I have np with them getting rid of it. After I put in a new harddrive I never installed it again.

FW 3.30 Coming Soon

Hi everyone, in our continued effort to provide the best, most comprehensive entertainment experience possible, we’ll be adding a few new features to PlayStation 3 (PS3) via the latest system software update, which is a mandatory update and will be available shortly. Most notably, you’ll see some new sorting options within Trophies that make it easier to claim bragging rights among your friends on PlayStation Network.
  • Trophy enhancements –- Now you can more easily sort trophies in the [Trophy Collection] and [Comparing Trophy] sections. Sorting can be done with [Trophy Collection] in the [Game Category] and also when comparing trophies with your friends in the [Friend Category]
    • Trophy Folder (Title List) can be sorted by game name/ by title according to the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)
    • Add-on list (Group list) can be sorted by original/the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)
    • Trophy list can be sorted by original/trophy name/grade/date of obtaining the trophy (ascending/descending)
In addition, this update preps the PS3 system for some upcoming new features, including 3D stereoscopic gaming, which is coming soon to PS3, in time for the launch of Sony’s 3D BRAVIA TVs.

Seems Sony lost the lawsuit regarding the Other OS removal and will now be giving out refund checks to PS3 owners in North America, half of what they paid for it. In hindsight they probably should have kept it in and dealt with the piracy if and when it came up. $150-300 per 13+ million consoles out there is quite a hit

Sony refunding all PS3 owners for removing an advertised feature

June 6 2010

In the end of April the firm had filed a class action lawsuit against Sony Computer Entertainment America, Inc., for Sony's decision to force users of its Playstation 3 console to either install an update that would disable the console's "Other OS" feature or lose the ability to play games with other users in the network. Because Sony failed to defend it's intentions in court, the judge decided that Sony will have to pay every PS3 owner, who bought his PS3 before March 27, 2010, a refund of 50% of the price when purchased.

The firm thanks all the PS3 owners who mailed, which made our voice even louder. PS3 owners that haven't mailed us should make contact with Sony Computer Entertainment America, Inc to claim their refund. An European firm will also file a class action law suit against Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Inc. We hope that we've done the PS3 owners a service. We are very glad as this is once of the biggest victory's in our firm's history.

Sony will also be at handing out refunds at "E3", a large video-gaming event, to all registered PS3 owners. A new article will be posted very soon on how Sony will be handling this matter.

Fake. The thought is that the site was hacked. Just check the grammar.

We are very glad as this is once of the biggest victory's in our firm's history.

You are probably right bc I dont see why all PS3s owners prior to April should get refunded. They removed the feature from the production of the Slims, long before this lawsuit. Only the ones who pruchased the fat systems should be affected

I'm thinking about getting a PS3 because i'm tired of borrowing my sisters when one of the few games I want gets released. Is it true that only one of the original versions was backwards compatible and all of the other versions after that aren't?

If so I might have to go with X-box 360, even though aside from the online function I hear PS3 is way better.

Actually all versions of the PS3 prdouced prior to fall of 2008, had PS2 backwards compatibility. The 80gb MS4 bundle was the last one that did. FYI, all PS3s are backwards compatible with PS1 games.

Are you really going to base your purchase on the system based on this? If PS2 games is still one of your main gaming option, then stick with the PS2 then. You'll be missing out on some pretty amazing titles that the PS3 has been releasing

I'll probably still get a PS3 even if it isn't backwards compatible but it would be a nice bonus so I wouldn't need two systems overall.

I might get one off of Ebay. I just checked and there are a lot of PS3s on there that are backwards compatible. I just figure for the price a brand new PS3 is going for still, i'm not sure if I would want to shell out that money if it's not backwards compatible and I only want a select few games for it.

I would actually advise against that or be cautious. Alot of PS3s are put on Ebay bc of the YLOD (yellow light of death), something that seems to affect more of the older models. Some manage to fix them and put them up on Ebay, but theres no guarantee they wont fail again. As long as the person has good feedback and the item description seems fine, you might be okay, but Id still be apprehensive about buying a PS3 (or any console) used

Yeah, I did think of that too but i'm torn at the moment.

It just sucks because at this stage in the game you would think the price of a PS3 would have dropped down a bit. I don't feel like shelling out $300 for it when i'm 29 and can't call myself a hardcore gamer anymore since I got bored of most of the games they release now days.

Then I have my gf wanting to get an X-box 360 which I don't want since i've heard enough to know the PS3 is better, other than online play.

Thanks. Looks like we're finally going to get a semi-decent update and not one that simply improves the stability of the PSN or whatever technical terms they use

Lol. That is very true. Wonder what other things will be in the update. Guess we will find out. You still getting PSN+ Havok?
