I don't understand why there are those complaining about there being a new Spider-Man that isn't Peter Parker in the ULTIMATE universe...which is separate from the mainstream 616 universe, which has/had Ben Reilly, and in an alternate universe/future which may or may not eventually be apart of mainstream continuity, we have Miguel O' Harra, Spider-Man 2099.
And een though it could be just a bunch of P.R B.S, Marvel claims they had the idea of a Black Spidey and killing off Peter Parker for quite some time before Obama was even elected. It just so happened that both ideas came together and were done in the Ultimate universe.
IMO Peter Parker has been and always will be the one true SPIDER-MAN but thats not to say someone else can't wear the mask and live up to the legacy of "with great power there must also come great responsibility"
Also I'm not accepting Miles Morales just cause him and I are both black(I've liked spidey since i was 3. But as of now it is nice to finally have a super hero that i love that I could actually be), I legitimately like him as a character and so far he is clearly shaping into a hero worthy of being Peter Parker's successor. a new Spider-Man perfect for a newer generation.
Cause i agree, one of the points they made is that yea there are a few black super heroes already but none of them are really that popular, none of them are really too exciting, and things prob wouldn't have gone well if they just made an entirely new hero, but taking a character as iconic as spider-Man and putting someone new under the mask, that really hits home and sends a message.
I dunno about anybody else but i think it's kinda cool and I'm really like the direction USM is heading atm.
