What about Film vs Digital. Where do you guys stand? And 3D vs 2D?

This is Star Wars and disney we're talking about, of course they're going to release it in 3D

A realistic mix of both. Much like every other film of this type.

If 3D is still in by that time, of course it will be 3D.

Star Wars is just begging for it.

Film and no 3D, but it's very likely that it's going to be in digital 3D.

CGI is basically going to be essential. The trick is to not rely on it so much that everything has a false sensibility, which is one of the many things that really brought the prequels down.

Ya no CGI Stormtroopers or anything. I think do as much as possible on location and set LOTR style. Then do what you have to with CGI.

EXACTLY. I voted wrong BTW. It should be lots of practical with minimal CGI enhancements.

And I can't see how they're cheaper when you have to animate it. lame.

I had the good fortune of seeing Episode IV at the Plaza Classic Film Festival two or three years ago. I will never forget the ooh's and ah's from all the children. More than once I heard "where did they get real robots" and/or "where did they get real monsters." Magical! Costumes, special effects, and real sets whenever possible, please!

I don't think there is anyone who fully opposes CGI, but rather using it too much. If whoever comes on can be responsible with special effects, then it will all be fine.

Both definitely, I love practical effects but CGI is a staple for effects these days.

Despite the limitations of the era, c3Po, R2D2, Vader and the Stormtroopers were so well designed in ANH. Especially the Droids. I thought they were real too!

Film is all but dead. In fact it was attack of the Clones that brought digital to Hollywood filmmaking.

The CG Clone Troopers were so distracting.

Oddly enough I remember just this shot as the one time the cg troopers ever looked good, and in retrospect even this doesn't hold up.

There is absolutely no reason for this to be cg.

None of this kind of stuff:

That's why I hated the whole duel between Obi Wan and Anakin, so fake and phony that in real life if two people were standing among lava the steam alone would've turned them to charcoal.

Yeah it looks like video game cinematic.

TPM and AotC were basically CGI and digital experiments. They paved the way for lots of stuff we're seeing now. That's why the CGI in RotS look infinitely better than in AotC. TPM also has tons of practical effects, it's basically a continuation of the RotJ method, just with CGI instead of stop motion.

I think we should expect this to be both digitally shot and in 3D. But also expect this to have far less CGI than the PT.

Or at the very least cause them to break a sweat. Obi-Wan and Anakin were cool the entire time. And I don't mean that metaphorically.

If they shoot digital for this, we're going to be so thrown off going from Ep VI to Ep VII.

It depends because Digital is getting better. If you look at Skyfall, I heard that it's as beautiful as film, you just need the right cinematographer like Roger Deakins to make it work. Otherwise, it'll look silvery or videoy like the latest Resident Evil.
