Prometheus - Part 5

PG-13 should be on the same level as the MA rating for tv. The Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy, that type of content has so much more depth than a typical pg-13 film.

In America we don't even enforce the ratings system. You can get into an R film no matter what age you are as long as you have a guardian with you which is anyone 18 and older. The whole thing is a joke.

I agree. The MPAA makes no sense in this day and age. Besides, I know of many box offices that don't even bother carding people for most R rated films.

If Hollywood studios catered to the Australian OLFC ratings system, Hollywood cinema would greatly improve.

G (General) – Contains material intended for general viewing. G does not necessarily designate a children’s film or game.

The content is very mild in impact.

PG (Parental guidance recommended) – Contains material that young children may find confusing or upsetting, and may require parental supervision.

The content is mild in impact.

M (Recommended for mature audiences) – Contains material that may require a mature perspective but is not deemed too strong for younger viewers, though they still require parental supervision. This rating is the highest unrestricted rating.

By contrast, the classifications below are legally restricted — it is illegal to sell or exhibit material so classified to anyone younger than the mentioned minimum age.

MA15+ (Mature Accompanied for those under 15) - Persons under said age may only legally purchase, rent, exhibit or view MA15+ rated content under the supervision of an adult guardian. The exhibition of these films to people under the age of 15 years who are not supervised by an adult guardian is a criminal offence.

The content is strong in impact.

R18+ (Restricted to 18 and over) - Contains material that is considered unsuitable for exhibition by persons under the age of 18. People under said age may not buy, rent, exhibit or view these films. The exhibition of these films to people under the age of 18 years is a criminal offence.

The content is high in impact.

Films that got that unrestricted M rating? R rated films like Alien, Aliens, The Terminator films, Predator, the Die Hard series, Green Zone, the Lethal Weapon series, Blade Runner, Kingdom of Heaven, Gladiator, the first three Rambo's and the Matrix Trilogy off the top of my head.

Not to mention the MA15+ is not the death knell that the U.S. R rating is. Anyone 15 and over can see them. 15, 16 and 17 year olds with part time jobs and disposable incomes are who Hollywood are targeting with the PG-13 rating anyway. Giving them the content of an Expendables or a Raid: Redemption through legal avenues would mean a lot more money for them.

You know what bums me out about movies like Prometheus? It's that I fear that level of space travel will never exist in my life-time. Such a bummer.

Well hopefully James Cameron turns his attention to space travel next. We might not live to see FTL, but it'd be cool to see the moon, or Mars.

If there's one thing I want to see out of James Cameron, it's a proper Terminator 3. But that'll never happen, so bring on the space travel.

I don't know abot James Cameron but Richard Branson has been working on it.

His already got Virgin Galatic and a Spaceport.

Branson has his own island, a deep sea explorer vessle and a car that turns into a boat.

Thats how I would spend my money if I was a billionaire :woot:

Question.

As someone who has never seen any of the alien films, how many of them would you recommend watching before Prometheus?

Is just watching the first one enough? Or should I blow through the whole quadrilogy?

Alien for sure. Aliens because is awesome. Aliens 3 is a toss-up.

You don't need to watch any of them if you don't want because Prometheus works as a standalone movie according to those involved but obviously watching the other Alien movies will enhance the experience as you will notice some of the stuff that connects it with the other movies and the Alien Universe in general.

The first movie Ridley Scotts Alien is probably the one to watch. You can check out the other three (Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection) if you want.

Ignore the Alien Vs Predator movies as they look like they have been booted from the movie continuity and they are not that good anyway IMO.

I did enjoy Aliens 3, it wasn't bad at all and Aliens Resurrection well; it was a tad bad, but the stupid Albino Alien Hybrid design was godawful.

Alien 3 had the nihilism themes, kind of worked for what was meant to be the final in Ripley's story.

Just watched Alien... it was okay, and I can see why people love it so much (some great lines, the 'shock effect', and Ripley's a great strong female character), but I don't think i'll bother with the rest.

If Prometheus works as a stand alone that's fine, though TBH I think not loving Alien may just mean Prometheus won't be my kind of film.

I can watch Aliens anytime... Alien is rather slow for multiple viewings. Watched it for the first time at the re-release in theaters, I think it was in 2002. Twice on dvd since then.

Just give Aliens a chance and skip the rest. Ripley is even stronger, and a lot more aliens!

I prefer much prefer Alien above any of the other movies. I like the slow build, the suspense, and the "you barely see the monster" aspect of the film. It's very JAWS-esque.

However, if you're more into action, ALIENS would definitely be the film for you. I don't even consider it a horror movie, I consider it an action movie. It's much more high-octane then Alien.

Regardless of quality you should watch the first three. In my eyes, the story ends with Alien 3.

I'm still waiting for that earth Alien movie.

Yeah man. Ridley and Cambo teaming up for that two part invasion of earth. It must happen. Ripley was Earth's guardian angel. With her death there's no one to stop the jockey's from carpet bombing us with biomechanical warfare.

Unless Shaw and company exterminate the Jockeys in Prometheus.

Unless you're going to do some serious retconning to the existing Aliens and AVP cosmos, then the Jockeys obviously aren't around for any of the other movies, except for Dead Jockey in the first Alien.

The original Alien 5/6 combo was about a jockey invasion. I very much doubt the AvP films are canonical anyway. The whole Peter Weyland character contradicts the AvP films anyway.

Interesting about the 5/6 storyline. Obviously it never became canon, but I wonder if Ridley ever read the script(s), or springboarded any ideas off them.

Well I'm on my phone, but when I get home, I'll dig up Cameron's interviews from the early 2000's.

EDIT:

http://au.movies.ign.com/articles/427/427459p1.html

According to Dark Horizons, Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron advised the BBC that he may indeed helm a potential Alien 5 (a separate project from the upcoming Alien vs. Predator film). "We're looking at doing another one," reveals Cameron, who also helmed the 1986 smash Aliens. "Something similiar to what we did with Aliens. A bunch of great characters, and of course Sigourney [Weaver]. I've even discussed the possibility of putting him [Arnold Schwarzenegger] into the Alien movie."

Cameron and Schwarzenegger previously teamed for the first two Terminator films, as well as True Lies. The closest Arnold has come to fighting an alien was in 1987's Predator.

By the way, Cameron "couldn't stand Alien 3 – how they could just go in there and kill off all these great characters we introduced in Aliens, and the correlation between mother and daughter. It stunk, but hopefully I'll get a chance to rectify all that [with Alien 5]."

His infamous interview with AICN;

JAMES CAMERON: Yeah. Ridley and I talked about doing another ALIEN film and I said to 20th Century Fox that I would develop a 5th ALIEN film. I started working on a story, I was working with another writer and Fox came back to me and said, "We've got this really good script for ALIEN VS PREDATOR and I got pretty upset. I said, "You do that you're going to kill the validity of the franchise in my mind." Because to me, that was FRANKENSTEIN MEETS WEREWOLF. It was Universal just taking their assets and starting to play them off against each other.
