Prometheus - Part 6

Not an ESB one either, because in the end there are no big revelations that call for a sequel. Quite the opposite in fact. You want a sequel, because there were no big revelations, and you wanted one.

But there was the revelation about Luke's father and how he'll handle that. Also, the Empire has driven the Rebellion to a corner.

So, is it a Back to the Future 2/Matrix 2 scenario? Although I have a rough idea what you're trying to tell us about Prometheus.

Maybe not but it's already been done. Maybe even overdone. The idea that men want to know too much and end up burning their wings in the process is way overused.

See, it's too safe to walk this route now. You have to take risks, maybe anger some people, but give us something to chew on. Just stating that a human-like civilization created us is not enough. Who created them? Why did they create us? etc etc... There are endless possibilities that could have been addressed, and raise more questions calling for a sequel in the process. Instead we are left with the initial question unanswered.

Aha. So they took grand ideas and kinda rationalized them, huh?

Sorry, I was talking about Prometheus when I said there were no big revelations at the end.

I haven't seen BTTF2, because I never liked the first one (and I caught the third one late one night on TV and didn't like it either).

Matrix 2, maybe... Although I don't like to comapre Prometheus to that piece of dogfood.

Kind of, yeah.

Ah, a shame then. Everything that I anticipated that would take a visually great movie and transform it into a masterpiece is not there. Oh, well.

Btw, thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.

Would you say Prometheus is a 7/10 then?

I gave it an 8 out of 10!

I know what you mean, it is not a masterpiece at all.

It's just bloody good science-fiction. Go in there expecting nothing more than that, and you'll come out with a smile on your face.

No problem for the answers.

Well all that is kind of disappointing to hear. Thanks for answering our questions with minimal spoilers.

I believes it's alright for a film to raise some questions for a possible sequel to explore. But if the film doesn't explore the initial questions that it raises in the first place, then you may have a problem.

I haven't let the hype for this film reach me, so I shouldn't have a problem. But Lindelof (and, to an extent, Scott) dropped the ball in his interviews for alluding that this movie would actually take the visuals and atmosphere of Alien and season it with some good-ol' fashioned philosophical questions that they'd actually be integral to the plot.

Yeah I was looking forward to the philosophical themes of the film but I guess they might have skipped a bit on that too. Damn.

They are there, but not satisfyingly answered when the end credits start to roll. I hope that you feel differently about it when you see it.

Nice. Oh, well, 8 days left pour moi! I'll find out soon enough.

First, let me tell you that I really don't like 3d in movies. And like every movie that I saw in 3d, I thought that it worked only during the first ten minutes. after that, you don't really notice it's in 3d anymore.

But the first ten minutes are gorgeous. The landscapes are amazing, and during these first scenes, the 3d is vertiginous.

The whole movie is visually stunning. Saying it's really well shot doesn't do it justice. It's Scott at his best in the visual department.

There wasn't a lot of action scenes, but they were really great.

But I was disappointed by the story. Being a Lindelof fan, I can'(t help but think he wrote something really average. There are no surprises, and no twists. It's all really predictable, and the story is not really engaging.

The cast was underused, with maybe the exception of Fassbender (but there isn't enough of him, and his character is not well used) and Rapace, who does a fine job. Theron, Elba, and Pearce are barely in it. They are really wasted. You can't really relate to any character, which is a pity.

I would say that the punchline of the movie perfectly summarize the story. There is nothing more and nothing less. Also, you won't see a lot more than what you see in the trailers (bear in mind that I only watched the trailers. I didn't watch any tv spot, nor did I read any spoilers or reviews).

I think I have to watch it again, because I was tired when I saw it. I really liked it, but I wanted to love it, which I couldn't, because of a story which wasn't engaging enough to me.

Sequel baiting, lazy storytelling, drawing out plot points? I would never expect that from Damon Lindelof. :cwink:

haha indeed. I hope his presence in this film isn't too obvious, because he ruined Lost in my opinion.

Well, was there an xenomorph in it or what?!

You briefly see one at the very end, but it does nothing.

There's a little something that I'd like to add, that I think is a good thing.

When I first saw Blade Runner, like many others, I did not like it. I don't know if it was too abstract, too slow-paced, or too artsy for my tastes at the time (I was about 15), but anyway, I did not like it. And yet, from the moment it was over, it stayed with me. The more hours, then days passed, the more I wanted to watch it again. I did, and fell in love with it. Then rewatched it, and fell more in love with it, etc. etc. Now it's my favourite movie of all times.

Same thing happened with Alien, which I saw not too long after Blade Runner. Didn't like it on the first viewing (I had seen Aliens before, and expected more action, GIs all over the place blasting away xenomorphs), but then I felt like watching it again, and it grew on me with each new viewing. Now it's in my top 15 movies of all times.

Well... I saw Prometheus nearly 16 hours ago. And the only thing I want to do right now is watch it again.

I think I should watch it again, but I wouldn't say I need to, nor I really want to. It was magnificient, but to me, it was also... empty. When you think that the most interesting character is the android, that says something about the lack of depth of the other characters.

Why compare it to Blade Runner? There is such a small chance it is anywhere near Blade Runner. We are talking about Tannhauser Gate and tears in the rain people.

I think he's comparing how it was a real experience to him. But indeed, apart from being two scifi movies, they are nothing alike.

Just throwing this out there. If you don't own the Alien Anthology Blu-Ray set, it's going to be on sale on Amazon today.
Holy crap that's cheap!
Amazon UK has actually had their Alien Anthology set at that at about that price (when you convert it to American dollars) for a long while now. I got mine from there and it only took a week to get here to the states. The US Amazon has been screwing people over on this one. :funny:

I have a couple questions if someone who's seen it doesn't mind.

Is the crashed ship in Alien the same one that crashes in Prometheus?

Is the dead Space Jockey at the end the same one in Alien?

I still really want to see this despite the fact that I'm an anti Ridley Scott fan. Odd?

I've just got back from seeing the movie, one word EPIC. Visually it was amazing, story was also very good imo.

Every true fan of Ridley's original Alien movie will leave the theater very satisfied.

Yes, because that word didn't lose its effect on the internet a long while ago. Also its meaning. :oldrazz:
