Prometheus - Part 6

I don't know for sure whether it was Fox or Scott that wanted the extra 20 minutes cut, but I would think Fox. Somehow Scott managed to convince them to lend him over 100 mil for a movie that was obviously going to be rate R. They probably interfered a lot out of financial worries. With a budget that big for a movie rated R they were probably concerned that they wouldn't make profit. It wouldn't surprise me if hey had it cut short so it could have more showings etc.

The marketing of the film definitely tells me Fox was concerned because they spoiled so many of the interesting plot points with viral vids etc. so it wouldn't surprise me if they had some of it cut short that they felt was unnecessary. It would just be like Kingdom of Heaven all over again. I hope we see it someday, unless of course it was Ridley who cut it short and he had a good reason for it.

I thought Fox was giving Scott full control, they made it Rated R, so I doubt they were worried about anything being cut. Where is this 20 minutes thing coming from?

Damon talked about it and Ridley talked about it. 20 minutes was cut, that is definitely a fact. Fox seems to have given Scott more control than usual but not 100%.

I don't know of a single film that doesn't get at least 20 minutes cut off its initial edit. I worked on an average budget French comedy and its first cut was 2 h 30 min long, before we edited it down to 1 h 40 min. There's no question a movie that big didn't get at the very least a 3 hour long first cut.

But Fox wouldn't have the balls to tell Scott WHAT to cut, and rightfully so. So in any case, he was the one making that call, and I trust him not to cut the single most important scenes from his film (cause, if those 20 minutes included the answers to the film's main question, which is what most critics feel the movie was lacking, they were the most important scenes).

Do you have a link? :yay:

No, I don't. It was posted on Prometheusforum.net a little over a month ago and people are discussing it there now. It's supposed to be between 17 - 20 minutes of footage cut from the film. It may not have been important, but I am just saying this because it happened with Kingdom of Heaven. People complained about plot inconsistencies in the theatrical version of KOH but the cut footage inserted into the Directors Cut helped explain all of that. It wouldn't even be the second time the studio has interfered with Ridley, more like 5th at least.

I swear to God, Fox said that they didn't cut anything themselves, and this is Ridley's final cut (on his own). Unless it's a spin but Rothman's statement was clear. Or it seems.

And Prometheus now has an 89 again on RT. That damn tomatometer is jumping all around the 80's

Let's hope it stay in the high 80s.

Uh, why? Are a few points on RT going to change the way you view the movie?

I'm more concerned with what the reviews actually say, like how the movie isn't very innovative or deep. It seems like it's going to be just a slightly above average thriller... Nothing memorable. Which is a shame.

@ Hit-Girl My comment isn't meant to take seriously.

And you can't say stuff like 'nothing memorable. Which is a shame' without seeing the movie. Which kinda contradicts what you just said about RT's ratings because obviously it's affecting the way you feel about the movie right now.

There could always be the Directors "Directors Cut" for Bluray. I'm sure there will be much more footage and extras on the home releases.

I just found it. According to DVDenFrancaise the Blu-ray will contain 20 minutes of deleted scenes.

Nah... A number is different than actual quotes from different reviews which agree on the same failings.

It's still a contradiction on your part. I'm not giving you a hard time, but they're allowing you to dictation your preconceived thoughts on the film.* So you can't say 'Uh, why? Are a few points on RT going to change the way you view the movie'. Which has not in the past.

*I use critics as a meter myself, but in the end, they're more like guides. I've agreed with them before, I've disagreed with them too. But they're useful. I just hate it when people totally dismiss critics as if they're useless when they're not.

Rawr. In less that 24 hours I'll have that huge f***ing IMAX screen bending round me. Giddy, me? Too f***ing right. Then I'm gonna go get loaded, and come here and you poor bastards are gonna have to put up with me.

It has nothing to do with our own individual opinions.

Unfortunately, RT ratings often reflect a film's popularity.

So, as a fan, I'm concerned about Prometheus getting a good rating, cause it will mean it probably did good enough to warrant a sequel, which, ultimately, is what we want.

As immature as it sounds, it's like rooting for a team. You want them to success in all aspects. But sometimes, some people can take it too far and become too defensive or self-righteous which is the sad nature of the internet.

Let's not be greedy, eh? Shall we just try and enjoy the film we haven't seen yet before thinking about the sequel.

I'm off to get ready for the midnight screening here in Sweden, having read the mixed reactions I've been lowering my expectations but hopefully Ridley Scott's return to sci-fi is at least good.
