I'm trying so hard not to click on spoiler tage, and so far I am succeeding. So far...
Stick to that dude. I was half asleep and just clicked on one without thinking. I'm an idiot! :csad:

Stay strong! :word::BA

Just come back from London IMAX showing and I have to say I'm thoroughly upset and I honestly believe Ridley Scott is Trolling and made this film only to fund some other projects of his that he wants to make.

Here is my review warning spoilers:
I am a very Big fan of the films (first 3 only), and when I first heard of this film being done by Ridley Scott I thought it was going to be epic! After just watching the film, I feel really sad, angry and just pissed off!

I need to get this out of the way first and it's to do with the ending. What the hell was that Dinosaur/Alien looking thing, it's like the designers failed ona monumental level of making anything horrific, the original Alien design was so horrific and shocking this was like watching a chestburster and out pops an Iguanadon-Alien-Teradactyl hybrid!? WTF!?

I liked the scenes with the space jockey and showing them but they didn't say anything not one thing, I thought there would be some communication at some point but all we got was some neanderthal attacks??

It just seems like, he didn't really explain anything.

Those capsules that the "Captain" of the Prometheus happens to explain as Biological weapons, HOW THE HELL DID HE KNOW THAT!? It was presumption upon presumption and speculation throughout the whole thing!

Vickers-Weyland?! Complete stupid idea!

I've got interviews of Ridley where he states they're going to answer stuff about the Jockey but he might sawell just left it alone! I thought he was going to do something about God and the creation of man, but he cheaped out especially with that scene where Holloway goes "well if they created us, then who created them!?", meh I don't know!

It just seems a bit unfinished, or it seems like he didn't really get across what he originally intended, I'll buy the Blu-ray just to see the commentary but this was as Bad if not worse than Alien Resurrection and I'm actually Heartbroken!

Also LV-223?

The first Alien is LV-426, so - Either this planet is not the one from Alien OR Shaw ends up in a Space Jockey suit and lands on LV-426 and a chest burster explodes but, this is full of holes!

It absolutely PAINS me to say it but I agree with every word of this.
What I will say is I disliked both Alien and Blade Runner on first viewing and only on subsequent viewing did they grow to be my favorite movies so there is a chance this may happen again.

How can one dislike Alien on first viewing? Blade Runner is more understandable even though I personally loved it from the first second I saw it. :)

If anything is trolling, it's giving this movie a 1/10. Okay if you dislike it but a 1/10 is just not possible, the visuals alone make sure of that.

Another reviewer that didn't get the memo that this isn't supposed to be just an Alien prequel. Scott said it many times. Too many.

Yes it's LV-223 not LV-426 and yes that means its not the same planet as the one in Alien, but nobody said it was. I don't think Shaw is going to get in the Space Jockey suit and have her chest explode just yet. Ridley has stated that we are still two films away from Alien so have faith that everything will still be spoon fed to you...

Haha. I'm not really expecting or wanting to have the next movies end up at the beginning of Alien and explaining every little detail, but there are a lot of new questions brought up in Prometheus I would like them to go further on.
As a standalone film I don't think Prometheus can stand on it's own, but it is indeed a good start of a trilogy.

I thought Weyland put David up to infecting Holloway. Weyland wanted to make things happen David was carrying out his orders. David was comunicating with him in cryo.

Davids "how far would you be willing to go" was his way of indirectly getting Holloway to agree to sacrifice himself for the mission.

I think David had a conscience and that was his way of getting Holloways consent.

David securing Shaw in cryo with a facehugger in her so they could take it back to Earth were also things Peter Weyland wanted.

The thing is at no point did Weyland seem interested or even aware of the weapons potential, he purely wanted to meet him maker with the idea that if they created human life then maybe they could prolong his.

I was just thinking, wouldn't it be interesting if David flouted Weyland's instructions and said something that was antagonising to the Engineer? I mean he visibly got agitated when Shaw was shouting at him and then when Weyland's goon hit her, what if David fed on that agitation and got the Engineer to get rid of the people he was in servitude to?

I think that's plausible as David certainly seemed to be irked by Holloway's jabs that he felt nothing and was merely a thing to be used.

Shaw was brave but also reckless, naive and her curiousity is more of a character flaw than a positive part of her character.

Her choice at the end highlights this, I mean what exactly does she think is going to happen [BLACKOUT]when she reaches the Engineers home world?
[/BLACKOUT]
This may have been discussed already, so forgive me, but I see it is the topic of now. Isn't this the "staple" of most horror movies??? Aren't the characters generally just 1 dimensional plot points... The stupid blonde, the slacker/stoner... the "jock"... the "bookworm". Only partial dramas like Alien actually bothered to aim these generalized characters in a more "useful" manner (and I think that had more to do with the situation they were in "deep space" than the actual intent to do so).

To an extent that is pretty true, but the structure of the film and the pacing allowed for more fleshed out characters. However the big flaw in this regard was how Janek and Vickers were so 1 dimensioonal given their roles on the ship.

Alien was on the other night and after watching Prometheus I realised in terms of look and some scenes they are actually more similar than I thought.

I think Prometheus is definetly a movie you need to think about a bit to get some of the layers.

I didn't workout the opening until after I had seen the movie and thought about
the sacrificial engineer is prometheus. he sacrfices himself and gives us life and thus the power of creation

Completely agree Hunter... I wasnt trying to minimize Alien's characterizations...or lack their of. I am more wondering why EVERY movie has to have deep personal attachments to the characters. Some movies, by their very archetype, don't necessarily need that. Again, this is not an excuse to make a bad movie, just a realization that some films have different "requirements" than others.

BTW- my comparison of Alien as being "just" a horror movie, was an exaggeration at best. It is clearly more of a psychological thriller or a Sci-fi drama with horror aspects.

Probably one of my biggest gripes with the script. [BLACKOUT]What the hell was she thinking? It's like they wanted to insist on the immediacy of a potential sequel.[/BLACKOUT]

I have to wait until August to see this film.I stay out of this thread, I don t read any reviews, but please tell me ONE LITTLE THING!!

How big is the part Guy Pearce is playing in the film? Do we see much of him?

Yeah I'd definitely say it's a horses for courses thing, just in this case two key characters felt very much wasted, especially Vickers who didn't even have an arc.

Exactly!
I mean her only other encounter with an Engineer resulted in him trying to kill her, and she thinks going to a planet full of them with a shady robot head as her only ally is a good idea?

About 5 or 6 minutes screentime tops.

Grabbed my midnight show ticket yesterday and I finished up watching Aliens last night...

Posted this in another thread but it should go here too!

Prometheus review -
I wont lie, I was upset to see so many poor and mixed reactions because this was a film I was dying to love and think was awesome...AND IT WAS :awesome: Literally blew me away! Sunday morning 10am and the place was 70% full, IMAX 3D. It was captivating from start to finish and felt like nothing iv ever seen before. People keep saying how the characterization is weak...it really isn't..lots of subtle things for the smaller characters and Fassbender being amazing, then with Noomi delivering a pure powerhouse performance, with shades of Ripley. Wasn't as jump-scary as I was waiting for, and thats good cos im a big pansy. It was visually very impressive and the attention to detail was massive..best 3D since Avatar. The story made me feel like I was discovering things with them as it went along, and never got boring for me. So glad it wasn't a 12A but a 15..the violence was just at the right level to make me cringe and smile simultaneously. Score was lovely BUT, and I need help here, I totally didn't hear the theme used in the trailer?! I think I went deaf. CANT WAIT to see it again, get the Blu-ray, and see the sequel!

Im going to be thinking about this alot now, and wondering why people are saying it didn't have much to it..I personally think it did! Perhaps it wasn't what some people were expecting. 5 star film for me, simple beauty. This is my Rise of the Planet of the Apes for 2012.

BTW...it so happens the human race started in Scotland ;) :woot:

This movie was good but nothing more. I was never excited for this, so I didn't really have any expectations for this. I only saw this because of Idris Elba and The Fass. Not counting David the characters ranged from very meh to bad. Just about every actor was given almost nothing to do. The story is decent but nothing great. There are 2 reasons to see this movie however the visuals and Michael Fassbender, he's phenomenal. Overall, its good but nothing else. Disappointing since I do love the first Alien, hated the others though.

Insightful interviews with Director Ridley Scott, Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and writer Damon Lindelof.

Shouldn't watch unless you have seen the movie.

Damon Lindelof interview was th most insightful I think. They made it deliberately ambiguous although some answers are in the movie if you watch closely enough

My thoughts on Prometheus:

tumblr_m523kvdFGx1qjtjj7.jpg

Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror Prometheus is finally here! Damon Lindelof, one of the creators of the tv series Lost teams up with the visionary story teller to bring you great questions like how was humanity created, what would happen if we find our beginning and if we truly we’re created, how would our creators/gods feel about us today?

The story begins when Archeologist Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) & her loved one Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) find more ancient cave paintings that seem to be 3500 years old, while the cultures had nothing in common, the same star map was found from them, thus they believe humans weren’t evolved from any race from the distant past, but something truly beyond the great galaxy created us, Darwinism be damned in this movie. Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) the multibillionaire founder & CEO of Weyland corporation is interested in Shaw’s visions and is a ruthless man seeking immortality, thus investing on this journey for his own selfish desires, while Shaw’s interests are her curiosity, her belief in Christianity and of course in the name of science!

One of the great achievements of Weyland thru his power hunger was creating life itself and the 2nd lead of the movie is an Android named David (played by the charismatic Michael Fassbender, who naturally steals the whole show thanks to Fass’ performance & Lindelof’s writing), who is an interesting character to be had in this film, you have a bunch of homo sapiens trying to find their creator, but their crew has an creator from the homo sapiens, is he any in awe? Is he impressed? Or does he simply see them as inferior? David’s character development, his lack of morals and willingness to achieve the end means makes Fassbender’s performance as cheered as his performance in X-Men: First Class where he played the anti-hero Magneto. I mean, you have people like Holloway laughing at him for being a machine, Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron) who is as ruthless as her boss Peter Weyland, just orders him around and shows no sign of respect, but disrespect and distrust, while David himself has a child-minded look at all these different people, but no desire whatsoever to be them, after all, he is their superior model in every conceivable way, what good does something like a soul mean truly?

What they find in the planet, what happens, what is answered and what remains unknown, for me feels like too much getting into specifics, and thus it becomes more of an discussion than an review to the movie, but let me just put emphasis on this: Watch the movie with an open mind, anything is possible and keep paying attention to everything, because that’s what makes this such a delicious meal for a movie, it’s raw vast amounts of lore, mythology and world building is intriguing, and barely anything gets thrown as some exposition dialogue spam, but it’s left for the imagination of the viewer.

That’s really what makes this movie interesting, at its core it’s a 2 hour movie where scientists desire answers, go to this planet and everything goes horribly wrong like in some haunted mansion full of ghosts, but that’s not what appeals here, what appeals is the idea that some Proto Humans created us, left Earth and now we’ve come to their door steps, how would you feel if we found the Mythological Greek Gods? Zeus considered all women his personal rape targets, I’d be horrible for someone like Zeus to make a triumphant return to Earth and how would that man feel about some mere mortals coming to his door steps, when he punished the Titan Prometheus for giving flame to the people.

The movie at itself is good, the first two acts are beautifully paced, the setting, the environment everything is just absolutely beautifully detailed from all the little details, the nods to the Alien legacy we’re fangasming, but the 3rd act sadly suffers from slight Deus ex Machine & rushed finishes off some subplots. However my biggest problem probably with this movie is that the movie ends with a hook towards a possible sequel, now I wouldn’t mind a sequel, but at the same time the movie leaves a lot of things to the viewer, while alongside representing whole new questions worth pondering about, but it still for me personally changes Prometheus from a movie that’s about our beginning, to a possible trilogy about our beginning, and that can be really painful if I’d have to wait till 2020 or so to see the last chapters of the story told.

Alien left alot of unanswered questions which got slowly answered through the 3 sequels...and now still being answered in Prometheus lol...so it isn't like this is a new thing. I like that its feeding us bit by bit.

To afew people saying "why would she even try to go to that planet?!"

cos she lost everyone she cares for and wants to carry on what she and her love wanted, to find out! Going back to Earth would be as bad a fate as going to a planet of those things, in her mind. Possible death but finding out vs never finding out and letting her partners work, and life, go to waste..I know what one I'd choose.

edit - did the theme from the trailer play in full in the film? Like I said I just didn't notice so found it strange.

Also, Noomi is a hottie.

OK, so I have a question about the movie:

In Alien the Spacejokeys chest was busted open on the chair with the suit still on. But in this movie, he was out of the suit and the alien busted open in the space shuttle. What the hell?

Dude

It's not the same planet they're on.

Afew theories are going around online about that, both main arguments have interesting points but it will leave the door open for answers in #2, cos noone can say for certain at the moment.

Ok, have to reply, been looking forward to Prometheus for many months. Just saw it a few hours ago. I saw The Thing prequel last year and thought "Why?", I feel the same about Prometheus. The movie is just unnecessary, I expected a deep, intelligent movie and got nothing. Should have known since Damon Lindelof was involved, Lost didn't make much sense. For me personally this is the let down of the year.

It needed to do one of two things. Either associate yourself more with Alien or just don't be part of the franchise at all. They tried for this middle ground that I don't think worked at all.
