I know Alien is more ingrained throughout the movie than just the final scene but to me it is 'implied' throughout movie whereas the final scene out right calls it out.
The only thing I really don't like about that scene is...it really doesn't serve any purpose to any plots.

I mean, it doesn't play into the plot of Alien at all, it obviously won't play a role in Prometheus 2, and really doesn't serve any thematic point in the film itself.

8/10 by far my favorite film of the year. nothings compared yet. we'll see how the other films shape up this summer.

Man I really loved this film, in a way this is the cinemtic space epic that Avatar TRIED to be at times but never reached. Obviously this has more to do in the Alien canon but the scope of this film felt so huge that I couldn't help but be sucked in.

All the performances I really believed in and the parts that were meant to scare you and make you jump totally did that for me. It was one of the most enjoyable times I've had at the theater all year, this even beats out the two showings of the Avengers. What do you guys think of that score? I loved how cinematic and HUGE it felt at times but then you'd hear these little piano pieces during the scenes when David is introduced and then at the very end. Man, just thinking about it is giving me goosebumps.

I understand that the final scene is more just a "HEY, DON'T FORGET THIS IS AN ALIEN MOVIE" notion but I completely thought it worked and made sense for the beginning of everything. It was a money shot and it was totally perfect. I normally have a distate of prequels and even though it is...but isn't...I loved this film. Great stuff!

I also kind of feel like Ridley integrated some of the best or most iconic aspects from other, lesser, sci-fi films into this would with great results.

From a dying iconoclast's neverending search for eternal life, to smaller sci-fi aspects of the movie, he seemed to really collect and reinvigorate a lot of great sci-fi concepts.

While it definite fits with the Alien movies as well, it also seems to serve as a thematic sibling to the works of Philip K. Dick and Issac Asimov.

Yeah if that was coming out at me and I'd be running away screaming...
Didn't it imply they were high, though?

If not, they certainly acted like they were. :o

They were high? I knew one of them was smoking tobacco...but I don't remember anything else being smoked at all.

The one said "are you smoking tobacco?"

And the other said something like "yeah right...tobacco." As if he was inferring it was something else.

I am seeing this movie tonight at 950. I was originally going to have to wait until tomorrow so I am very glad. Ive been up all night. Can't sleep in anticipation. Nice to see more great reviews.

I would say I enjoyed Avengers more but this movie has stayed with more so I guess it has left a deeper impression on me. I think when I get both movies on Blu Ray (Prometheus/Avengers) I can see myself enjoying Avengers less with every viewing but I can see myself enjoying Prometheus more with every viewing.

I will also add I've only enjoyed two Scott movies right out of the gate, Legend and Gladiator. I really didn't enjoy Alien and Blade Runner the first time I saw them, now they are my favorite movies and I enjoy them far more than Legend and Gladiator and I suspect I will add Prometheus to the Alien, Blade Runner 'enjoy it more with each viewing'.

Wow, I cannot wait to see this on Blu Ray.

I'll have to see this on IMAX soon, we went to the midnight showing and didn't expect IMAX to be fully sold out.

one thing that makes little sense to me

The Space Jockey flips out at the end and attacks everyone. WHY?

Its funny that some people don't get why David did the things he did when he was probably one of the most easier to understand characters in the movie I think.
If people in horror movies acted with any sense then the movies would be very boring indeed;

Amityville - 'This house is haunted, let's move to a new house'
I liked when they tried moving house in insidious and it didn't work :woot:

I have a couple theories.

1)Possibly he thought they might be infected and thus turn hostile (Weyland did have his merc wack shaw).

His last order before going into cryo-sleep might of been to destroy any non-engineer creature as a cotangent plan.

2)The Engineer at the beginning of the movie who sacrificed himself to create human life might of done so against the wishes of the other Engineers thus he is the literal interpretation of the Prometheus myth.

The Engineers were going to wipe out the humans thousands of years ago possibly because they were not meant to be created so when the engineer saw humans his response was to destroy them.

That Engineer had been in Cryo-sleep for a couple thousand years and may not have got the messsage to call off wiping out the human race.

Had my problems with alot of it yet....still reall enjoyed it. Fassbender owned the flick.

Question, Was a bit tired at the midnight so this could just be me not 100% focused but
How did the bio weapon actually work? Was there an actual breakdown of what happens to the infected? It seemed to have different effects on people. I felt the evolution of how we get to an Alien creature at the end of it wasnt explained too well and was a bit all over the place.

I think it depends on what species gets infected and how complex the chain of infection is....

Basically, consider the Black Goo as a kind of "essence of life". It breaks down the DNA of whatever it infects, and then rearranges it into a new form / state of existence.

Thus :

- Black goo + Engineer DNA = rearranges Engineer DNA into Human DNA (possibly, the intro is unclear as to what exactly happens once the DNA strands start to rearrange into the water).
- Black goo + worm DNA = rearranges worm DNA into Hammerpede DNA.
- Black goo + human DNA (dead - Fifield) = The human is reanimated into a zombie-like creature.
- Black goo + human DNA (alive - Holloway) = infection that rearranges the human DNA into God knows what (Holloway is killed before we get a chance to know, it's unclear whether or not he would have survived his transformation)
- Black goo in infected Human DNA (Holloway) + another human DNA (Shaw) = impregnation of Human being resulting in the birth of a squid-like creature.
- Black goo in squid DNA (+ still containing traces of human DNA) + Engineer DNA = proto-xenomorph.

Although that would be a b... to explain "scientifically", I think the main reason behind the fact that every time someone gets infected by this black goo the result is different is that never in the film do we see the same configuration twice : there's always a new species (worm, human, engineer), or a new method of infection (drinking, contact with skin, pregnancy) involved in the process along the way.

Why did he infect Holloway with the substance saying 'big things have small beginnings?' At that point no one had ever encountered the black slime so there was no way he could have known what it would do.

My impression is that the black goo is a bio weapon that functions like a virus. It infects and eventually turns humans into mutants that attack their population. But before that, it replaces the human sex cells with new ones, effectively hijacking the reproduction system and causing people to give birth to squid babies that eventually fill the planet with Xenos.

The whole 'we'll never know the answers' is a lazy Christian's way of looking at things. We now have a better understanding than ever about the formation of suns and planets. Since Darwin's time we've been able to determine that we do in fact share a common ancestor with other apes, and the miller urey experiments show us that organic matter can come from inorganic matter.
I was annoyed by the humans constantly reminding David that he can't experience certain things because he doesn't have a soul, when most scientists would concede that there's no reason to believe anything has a soul.

Saw the film last week and loved it. It's not quite the unforgettable space epic which many were expecting, but nonetheless I thought it was the best sci-fi/space film of recent years, and the cinematography and general style & look of the film were amazing.

I had a few friends with me though who weren't blown away by it. Opinions seem to be decidedly mixed, and usually due to the expectations people had going into it.

We've been discussing the film - like everyone else - and there are still some things which I'm wondering about though ..............

1) When we see the hologram footage of the space jockeys running into the sealed room, one of them falls at the door. That's the one later found by the crew of the Prometheus, decapitated by the door. His head is on the other side of the door in the sealed room, perfectly preserved. What happened the other space jockeys who ran into the room ahead of him? Where are their bodies? There didn't appear to be any other way out of the room.

2) The huge statue of a humanoid head ...................... does it have any function, or is just symbolic?

Just woke up from the midnight viewing of the movie. Really enjoyed it. Not Alien or Blade Runner good by any means but it still looks good and is well acted, despite the characters themselves kind of being idiots for 99%. I think only 2 of the characters showed any real intelligence.

Was Fifield dead?

I don't remember his life signal going dead.

His helmet melted to his face from the acid spalsh but I'm not sure if that may of killed him.

It just occurred to be he was able to breathe in the alien atmosphere though as his helmet was broken.
It just ocured He was able to breathe

I got the impression David and Weyland knew far more than they were letting on.

David had spent two years studying languages so that he could read and speak the alien language.

When they went aboard the engineer ship while the human crew were looking around david was reading the engineer writing on the walls (he opened the door if you remember) .

David was the only one who could read and speak the Engineers language.
The engineer writing could of easily said what the rooms contained.

David used Holloway as a test subject to see the effects and what the black goo could do to humans proabably on the orders of his creator and 'father' Peter Weyland who he was secretly communicating with behind the rest of the crews back.

David was carrying out Weylands orders.

Which two do you think Spider-Fan?

I think Captain Janek seemed competent.

Fifeld seemed smart enough to get the hell out of there and tell Milburn not to mess woth the snake alien as well.

Getting lost in the engineer ship was pretty dumb of him though.

I think he definitely died after the attack. The acid did melt his helmet onto his face, causing him to suffocate (or get burnt by the acid coming through).

Also if I'm correct, he collapsed face first onto the floor (therefore getting infected by the black goo), indicating that clearly he wasn't feeling too hot.

I wouldn't bet my life on it though, it just made sense to me that the attack had left him at best grievously injured.

Do you guys want to see a Prometheus sequel or would you rather Scott created a brand new movie set in a different universe with new characters?
