So it's kind of like Mission Impossible 2 was to Mission Impossible 1?

Not saying its as bad as MI2, but that while it may be in the same universe with the same concepts, it takes on its own, different tone?

I
I swear the one I saw was a dark blue...

Ha! You are completely right. I'm just coming out of my second viewing and I don't know how the hell I saw it differently, and yet I would have bet my life on it... The human mind and its mysteries, right?

Well, I suppose I can understand some of the issues people had with the film, but overall I'd say it's very enjoyable. I had hoped for more "horror" than there was, but once I realized it isn't a complete horror it didn't bother me that much.

"If" this is the first of three parts, I'd say it's a good start.

Given how incredible the trailers and virals have shown us, I'm a bit surprised that the final product doesn't meet the high expectations that we have accumulated for this movie. I just hope the movie will generate enough money at the box office so Scott can shoot two more sequels for Prometheus and complete a trilogy.

Would Prometheus be comparable to Aliens due to it's supposedly faster pace and less of a horror tone?

So for these who have seen it does the film seem like

A:Part of Alien Series
B:Completly original film

The answer will determine If I spend money going to theatres on this.

It feels like it's a shiny version of the world of Alien, like the time before everything went dark and industrial.

Would Prometheus be comparable to Aliens due to it's supposedly faster pace and less of a horror tone?

Pacing-wise I'd say it's much closer to Alien, it's like a retread of that blueprint.

Prometheus isn't out in the U.S yet but in Europe its been doing pretty well. It had a $1.5 opening day in France the second-highest French opening day of 2012, behind The Avengers and in the UK its opened with $1.6 million apperantly.

It has the largest presale ever at the London Imax and on the BBC film show they were saying they were getting extremely high numbers of people calling in having seen the movie.

Early tracking has Prometheus at $60 million for its first three days which is rather high considering its R-rated nature.

It sounds like some are saying Prometheus tries to hard to be too many things. It tries to be mysterious in the beginning, horrifying in the middle, and balls out action in the end. I kind of like the sound of that myself, however. Depends how it's executed.

After a second viewing (and in 2D yay!), I think the movie is a solid 8/10 but I won't raise that mark up a notch (I gave it an 8 after watching it for the first time).

It is too lacking in risks taken by the writing team. It's all too safe to go the "[BLACKOUT]just believe whatever the hell you already believe in, it doesn't matter whether we find the truth or not[/BLACKOUT]" route.

Gorgeous sci-fi film though, that's for sure.

I thought the pace was fine I never got bored or looked at my watch.

As for the characters not having much depth
Unlike the other Alien movies most the main characters don't know each other and the movie only takes place over a week.

These are not Marines who have been on a bunch of missions together or space truckers on another job or prison inmates or smugglers of the Betty.

They are also like mini teams within the 17 man crew.

Promethues crew - Captain Janek and his co-pilots Chance and Ravel. The cannon fodder Mechanics.

The Scientists Shaw, Holloway, Ford, Fifield and Milburn.

The Company Vickers, David, Peter Weyland and his Mercs

Most of them were there because

1)they believed in the mission
2)it was their job
3)the money
4)they had an agenda

I think the stuff that was cut was probably the character moments.

I asked Sharkboy this but I want to get other opinions from people who have seen it as well, how badass is the engineer? Is he scary at any point??

It depends. I don't want to go into any detail, there's a moment when he's coming through a door and it felt like a nightmare I had as a kid.

And
in the very short time he's in the film, you definitely wouldn't want to stand near him.

oooh hype! the buss to the cinema goes in 15 minutes :D

I mean kingdom of heaven, robin hood and hannibal were terrible so it never reaches that level of bad, make no mistake, no matter how many people tell you it's flaws you'll very rarely hear that its a bad film.

Oh, I read what you said completely in the other direction lol.

Someone who's seen it:

Would you call Weyland, Vickers, and David villainous characters?

So just how pointless is Guy Pearce's appearance in the movie? Is it at least entertaining and memorable??

I loved it! :D

Pretty much matched my high expectations, albeit not in the way I thought. Which is positive cause the movie surprised me! I loved how un-Alien it was, it really is it's own beast even though obviously set in the same universe.

First-most I must mention the visuals, what incredible visuals! Photography, camera-work, visual-effects, CGI, set-design, 3D, it all came together in an absolutely gorgeous and immersive way. Top notch all the way, oh how I have missed you in sci-fi Ridley! Visually it's a masterpiece in my mind.

Now to the script and story. Not amazing, but better then I expected! I was afraid the meaning-of-life stuff would try too hard, but to my liking it didn't try to give any answers or be too deep. Instead it focused on the actual sci-fi elements and after seeing this film I don't wanna discuss the mysteries of life, I wanna discuss the mysteries of the Prometheus universe. And what a rich univese they have created. It leaves you with so much memorable and striking imagery. Also a lot of thoughts about how it all works and how it all hangs together, even though it's not meant to have a one true answer. The movie drills into your mind and sure doesn't leave it when it's over, quite the opposite it's still drilling. Can't stop thinking about it and all I wanna do is see it again.

One fear was also that the movie would de-mystify the first Alien movie, but I loved how infact it gave more new questions than answers to old questions.

Now the movie has some flaws. As far as the narrative and pacing goes, it could have been much better. Well I loved the first and the last act, it's the middle that drags a bit and feels forced. Otherwise I love the slow and uneventful beginning of the movie. Love the scenes with David walking around the ship. Even though as a whole the movie doesn't always flow perfectly, there is always individual scenes around to blow you away. The scene when David discovers the Engineer-ship is just beautiful for example.

The last part of the movie, from Shaws operation and onwards it's just a big huge intense pay-off for the contemplating, mystery and searching. It's more intense and captivating though than horrifying, and that's where the movie surprised me and I guess will disappoint some people. But I don't mind at all, I was still on the edge of my seat in the end! The fans who wanted this to be more akin to Alien will be disappointed. At parts it's actually more beautiful than scary.

The scene where David wakes up the engineer is so tense and thrilling at the same time. Loved the engineer himself, very bad-ass and mysterious.

So about the new monster, Shaw's baby. It isn't a brilliant piece of design or anything and I know that will disappoint many fans. But damn it's freaky, it did it's job for me and really creeped me out. Especially cause it seemed to primitive and identity-less, yet so complicated. The plot-point about experimenting with DNA to create life and bio-weapons really works for me. Making the whole thing about life very unpredictable and I love how the engineers had been killed by their own engineering.

Some of the characters were weak parts of the movie, especially Holloway which is unfortunate since he plays quite a big part. Both poorly written and woodenly acted. Vickers had potential but often fell flat and the twist with her was predictable and uninspiring. Some of the characters worked great though so it wasn't all bad. Shaw and David were both solidly characterized and greatly acted, Fassbender and Rapace shined, especially together. I also liked Idris Elba's character, one to sympathize with and relate to. Something that lacked in most of the other side-characters, they never felt like real people which made a lot of the action with them feel unengaging.

Also some things in the movie I felt were missed opportunities. I would have wanted to see the new creatures have more screen-time and kill more humans. A lot of the deaths of human-characters were very unmemorable and uninspiring.

But the thing that left the biggest impression and impact on me was the last 15 minutes and the very ending. Loved how Shaw teamed up with David and how it showed that even though the events of the movie had been huge it was still just a tiny piece of an endless puzzle. Totally satisfying ending for me and I was about to prepare for credits when... Proto-Xeno!! Damn, one of the biggest and coolest nerdgasms of my life. It looked awesome!

I really hope this movie does well and that the lukewarm reviews get outnumbered by the positive ones. Cause I NEED a sequel to this, I need more of this world. I hope the making of this movie struck a nerve in old Ridley when it comes to making sci-fi, cause with this one he really showed me that he still has some of that magic in him.

A strong 4 out of 5 from me, 4,5 if you so will. Sorry for the rambling though, I'm still exhilarated from the movie.

Your review makes me very happy!! The reviews have been getting more positive in the last day. Very good sign. I think I will enjoy it quite a bit.

I can totally see this movie getting it's own fan-base, cause it's great and rich sci-fi but I think a lot of hardcore Alien-fans are gonna be alienated. Now I'm one of them Alien-fanboys, but I'm also a very open-minded and adaptable person when it comes to most things, not the least movies.

How would you rank it in terms of your favorite Ridley Scott films?

Shaw
operating on herself was pretty badass. She just injects herself with morphine and does it

How would you rank it in terms of your favorite Ridley Scott films?

It's tough to say at the moment. Cause even though it has more individual flaws than many other Ridley films it still manages to captivate me like nothing else except Alien and Blade Runner of his. I have a huge bias for sci-fi though and this movie showed me how good Ridley still is at making them. So I'm bound to rank it higher than it subjectively deserves.

Visually I'd say it's maybe his best behind Blade Runner, it's just so beautifully rich and immersive.

I need to see it again, so many scenes and images I'm dying to re-visit.

While a lot of characters are wooden and boring, both David and Shaw weighs them all up in my opinion. Fassbender just chews scene after scene and Rapace is so genuinely intense that hearts flicker. Once again I think too many people focus too much on what's bad instead of seeing what's great.
